Providence, Rhode Island, The American Mathematical Society, 1969. Royal8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. In "Transactions of the American Mathematical Society", Volume 141, July, 1969. Entire issue offered. Spine faded and a few bumps to extremities, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 1-35. [Entire volume: (4), 527 pp.]. First printing of Rabin's landmark paper in which he introduced his infinite tree automaton; a state machine that deals with infinite tree structure. It can be viewed as an extension from a finite tree automaton, which accepts only finite tree structures. Here he proved that the second-order theory of n successors is decidable; A key component of the proof implicitly showed determinacy of parity games, which lie in the third level of the Borel hierarchy. It was used by Rabin for proving decidability of monadic second order logic. It has been further observed that tree automaton and logical theories are closely connected and it allows decision problems in logic to be reduced into decision problems for automaton.

Paris, Mad. Ve Barnard, 1809. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt. Wear to top of spine. A few scratches to binding. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie, ou Recueil de Mémoires concernant la Chemie" Tome 70. 336 pp. (Entire volume offered). Davy's paper: pp. 189-254. First edition in French (the first English 1808) of this importent historical paper in chemistry, in which Davy shows that electricity is capable of decomposing some alkalies, isolating two new substances and discovering potassium and sodium. Neville in his Historical Chemical Library vol. I, p.340, writes about this paper "ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSIC RESEARCHES IN CHEMISTRY, in which Davy announced in this, his second Bakterian lecture, the isloation of metallic potassium and sodium by the electrolytic decomposition of their fused oxides.""He (Davy) began his own electrical experiments...The results were spectacular. On October 6, 1807, the current passing through molten potash liberated a metal, which Davy called potassium. The little globules of shining metal tore the water molecule apart as it eagerly recombined with oxygen and the liberated hydrogen burst into lavender flame. Davy danced about in a delirium of joy. A week later he isolated sodium from soda."(Asimow). The paper offered here describes these discoveries."Humphry Davy was one of the most brilliant chemists of the early nineteenth century. His early study of nitrous oxide brought him his first reputation, but his later and most importent investigations were devoted to electrochemistry. Following Galvani's experiments and the discovery of the voltaic pile, interest in galvanic electricity had become widespread. The first electrolysis by means of the pile was carried out in 1800 by Nicholson and Carisle, who obtained oxygen and hydrogen from water. Davy began to examine the chemical effects of electricity in 1800, and his numerous discoveries were presented in his Bakerian lecture to the Royal Society on November 20, 1806. First edition. "During his period in Berlin he produced an extraordinary series of papers on astronomy, on general dynamics, and on a variety of subjects in pure mathematics. Several of the most importent of the astronomical papers were sent to Paris and obtained prizes offred by the Academy."(Arthur Berry). "Lagrange's work in Berlin far surpassed the classical aspects of classical mechanics. Soon after his arrival he presented "Memoire sur la Passage de Venus du 3 Juin 1769", an occasional work that disconcerted the professional astronomers and contained the first somewhat extended example of an elementary astronomical problem solved by the method of three rectangular coordinates." (DSB). The analyses of this Venus transit was meant to provided data for estimating the sun-earth distance as the Venus went across the disk of the sun.

København (Copenhagen), Westermann, 1948. Orig. unstiched loose sheets in the orig. blue cardboard-folder w. paper-title, as issued. In the orig. blue cardboard-slipcase, also with printed paper-title. Spine and edges of slip-case a bit faded, otherwise an excellent, mint copy. No CXLVI of 235. First Danish edition of Eliot's monumental work, signed by Eliot and the two Danish translators. This modernist poem is one of the most celebrated and discussed poems of the 2oth century, and its modernist themes such as the decline of civilization and the lack of meaning of life greatly influenced modern literature and thought. There is no doubt that Eliot also greatly influenced modern Danish literature, and the Danish translator of "The Waste Land", Tom Kristensen, is one of the most acknowledged Danish writers of the 20th century. The work was originally published in 1922, and the Danish translation appeared in 1948, the same year that Eliot received the Nobel Prize for Literature. This first Danish translation was printed in a number of 650 regular copies, and 235 (Roman) numbered copies signed by the author and the two translators, of which this is number 146.

(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1767 and Berlin, Ch. Fr. Voss, 1774). 4to. Without wrappers as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres" Tome XXI, pp. 364-380 and " Nouveau Mémoires...", pp. 97-122. Both first edition in the journal form. Huygens proved Geometrically in 1659 that the tautochrone was a cycloid curve. This solution was later used to attack the problem of the Brachistochrone curve. Jacob Bernoulli solved the problem by using calculus in a paper from 1690, which for the first time used the term 'integral'. Both Lagrange and Euler loked for an analytical solution to the problem. Lagrange, in the papers offered here, developed a formal calculus based on the analogy between Newton's theorem and the successive differentiations of the product of two functions. He also communicated this to Eule in a letter written in Latin slightly before the Italian publication. In a letter to D'Alembert in 1769 Lagrange confirmed that this method of maxima and minima was the first fruit of his studies - he was only 19 when he divised it - and that he regarded it as his best work.A paper by Leonhard Euler:¨Éclaircissement plus détailles sur La generation et Propagation du Son et sur la Formation de L'Echo" Berlin Academy Royale 1767" in first edition withbound.

Leipzig, Fritsch, 1725. 4to. In contemporary gilt floral ornamented wrappers. Spine with wear and miscolured. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Inner hinges split. Previous owner's name (Peter Otto Rosenørn - owner of Hersomgård) in contemporary hand to verso of front wrapper. Internally nice and clean. (10), 126 pp. Rare Electoral capitulation (Wahlkapitulation) for Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of the Austrian Habsburg monarchy from 1711 until his death in 1740. The Wahlkapitulation was a contract or set of conditions that every Holy Roman Emperor-elect had to agree to before being officially crowned. These conditions defined the powers and limitations of the Emperor in relation to the estates of the empire, essentially functioning as a constitutional agreement. Charles VI faced succession problems due to the lack of a male heir. To secure his daughter Maria Theresa’s inheritance he issued the “Pragmatic Sanction” of 1713, allowing female succession. Despite his efforts to gain European support, his death in 1740 sparked the War of the Austrian Succession. Rivals like Prussia and Bavaria challenged Maria Theresa’s claim, leading to conflict and territorial losses. While Maria Theresa ultimately retained power, Charles’s plans failed to prevent the crisis, leaving her to resolve the instability. Provenance: Valdemar's Castle, Denmark

Kiøbenhavn, C.G. Prost/ B.K. Horrebow, 1802. Lille 8vo. Smukt samtidigt helldrbd. med rig rygforgyldning, forgyldte borter på permer (gevebindsudstyr). 125,(1) pp. samt 3 store foldetabeller. ren og frisk, trykt på skrivepapir. Scarce first edition of Teten's work on the "Widow Pension Fund" (Wittwen-Casse), a pension- and insurance institution for which he was director. His work "Einleitung zur Berechnung der Leibrenten und Anwartschaften, published in Leipzig in 1785 a.1786 was a landmark of actuarial science. It is recognized by actuaries for featuring the first risk measure ever (the Risico der Casse). In the offered book he applies his skills in actuarial mathematics. After his years as professor in Philosophy at the Kiel University,Tetens begun another career as a high ranking Danish civil servant: member of the Finanzcollegium in Copenhagen, then (1791) counselor of state, and (1803) co-director of the state bank and director of the widow pension funds. By this time, he was interested in pure mathematics as well as in applications. Tetens was professor of Philosophy at the University of Kiel from 1776-89. He was one of the first to discuss David Hume at lenght on the continent (he was called the German Hume). His "Philosophische Versuche über die menschliche Natur und ihre Entwicklung", 1777 exerted a tremendous influence on Kant while he was writing the Critique of Pure Reason, and the many similarities between their doctrines are evident. Tetens's doctrines may be compared to Kant's even in their speculative power and importance.Bibl. Danica II:773. The book was first published in Danish (the offered item) and a year later , 1803 in German with the title "Nachricht von dem Zustande der allgemeinen Wittwen-Casse zu Copenhagen am Schluss des Jahres 1797, mit einigen Bemerkungen über Versicherungs-Anstalten auf Lebens- und Sterbens-Fälle, und die Art sie zu prüffen."

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1903. Contemp. hcloth. Some small nicks to spine. (=) "Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Band 11. Herausgegeben von Paul Drude.". VIII,1144pp. and 6 plates. The Einstein paper: pp. 170-187. Internally fine and clean. First edition of Einsteins fourth paper. In his paper from 1902, Einstein "says in his introduction that nobody has yet succeeded in deriving the conditions of thermal equilibrium and of the second law of thermodynamics from probability considerations, although Maxwell and Boltzmann came near to it. Willard Gibbs is not mentioned. In fact, Einstein's paper was written in ignorance of Gibbs paper published 1901. In the present paper, Einstein builds the theory on another basis not used by Gibbs, namely on the consideration of a single system in course of time (later called "Zeit-Gesamtheit", time assembly), and proves that this is equivalent to a certain virtual assembly of many systems, Gibb's micro-canonical assembly...Einstein at once proceeded to apply his theorems to a case of utmost importance, namely to systems of a size suited for demonstrating the reality of molecules and the correctness of the kinetic theory of matter."(Walter Alicke). - Weil No. 4.

Lund, Jørgen Schrøder, 1675. 12mo. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Binding with light wear and a few holes in the leather. Margins closely trimmed, first leaves slightly touching text in upper margin, otherwise internally nice and clean. (2), 494, (6) pp. Exceedingly rare second Danish translation of Gerhard’s “Meditationes”, first translated into Danish in 1614. Until recently it was believed only the first translation and a second in 1737 was published (also stated in Ehrencron-Müller and Bibliotheca Danica). This present 1675-edition, printed in Lund by Jørgen Schrøder, is one of the few Danish books produced in Scania after the cession to Sweden in 1658. Schrøder operating from Bishop Peder Vinstrup’s press at Värpinge outside Lund, became the sole printer in the city when the Scanian War broke out that year and his rival Vitus Haberegger fled to Malmö. At Vinstrup’s likely instigation, Schrøder issued this Danish translation of Johann Gerhard’s Meditationes, the first since the now-unobtainable 1614 edition. (Tunold, S. Nyfundne eldre Danica i Oslo, 1963, p. 38). OCLC only list two copies. Not in Biblioteca Danica nor Ehrencron-Müller.
