[Nürnberg, 1553]. Small 4to-oblong. 8 leaves in later blank wrappers. Handwritten title in Swedish ("Wolfgang Fuggers/ Grækiska Abbreviaturer/ utgifne i Nürnberg 1553") to front free end-paper. Some soiling, a tear to the first leaf, and some leaves shaved, with loss of a bit of the German lettering. Excerpt from Fugger's extremely scarce handwriting-manual, the earliest work to deal in any way with the design of types. The present leaves comprise most of the Greek part of the work, with the exception of three pages, being: o2v: the textual introduction to the Greek section, o3r+v: both depicting Greek capital letters, o3v, also with pronunciation of the letters. o2r, which constitutes the final page of the Roman section, in present, at the end, but mounted at the verso of q3. Present is: o4-q3 + o2, in all 8 leaves, comprising 15 pages of the Greek section. The present pages constitute: Text in Greek, both in capitals and miniscules, text in German on writing Greek characters, depictions of Greek miniscules, with the names of the characters, illustrations of how to practically write the Greek characters, samples of different styles of the Greek characters, tables of how some of the characters are and can be merged and written together, what the character- and word-abbreviations look like, and the numbers. I.e. a full exposition of all the Greek characters and how to learn and use them.

A pattern was developing in his work, clearly of a Humboldtian nature - the gathering and analysis of geophysical data on a large, ever global, scale. While the range of Sabine’s interests was wide, terrestrial magnetism attracted most of his attention."(DSB). - Sabin, 74699.

Because of this, it is considered one of the most historically significant publications in the field of physics and of science in general.

(London, Taylor and Francis, 1860). 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. In "Proceedings of the Royal Society", Vol. X [10], No. 39. Entire issue offered. Wrappers with a few brown spots, fine and clean. Pp. 404-408. [Entire issue: Pp. 319-494]. First printing of Maxwell's paper on a method of exhibiting the relations of colours."Maxwell worked on the generation of white light by mixing different colors and in 1860, published the paper On the Theory of Compound Colours and its Relations to the Colours of the. In this paper, he extended the work of Thomas Young who first postulated only three colors, red, green and violet are necessary to produce any color including white and not all the colors of the spectrum are necessary as first illustrated by Newton. He also incorporated Hermann G?nther Grassman's concept that there are three variables of color vision (spectral color, intensity of illumination and the degree of saturation). Maxwell showed that these color variables can be represented on a color diagram based on three primary colors. While Newton distinguished his principal colors from the painters triad of primary colors (red, yellow and blue), he supposed the identity of mixing rule for lights and pigments. Even though Helmholtz explained that the mixture of color lights is an additive process while the mixture of pigments is a subtractive process as illustrated in Figure 2, Maxwell made experiments and developed a complete theory to explain how this happens by creating a color triangle which was originally suggested by James David Forbes and illustrated that any color can be generated with a mixture of any three primary colors and that a normal eye has three sorts of receptors as illustrated in his 1861 paper On the Theory of Three Primary Colours. He chose the three primary colors as red, green, and blue." (Sarkar, Pp. 4-5). From 1855 to 1872, Maxwell published at intervals a series of valuable investigations concerning the perception of colour, colour-blindness and colour theory, for the earlier of which the Royal Society awarded him the Rumford Medal. The instruments which he devised for these investigations were simple and convenient to use. For example, Maxwell's discs were used to compare a variable mixture of three primary colours with a sample colour by observing the spinning "colour top.".

[No place], 1869. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers, no backstrip. Offprint from the "Philosophical Magazine", January 1869. With authors presentation inscription to front wrapper: "With the author's Compliments.". Fine and clean. 9 pp. Offprint issue with author's presentation insciption to front wrapper of Wilde's paper on how to control and render the magneto-electri current which nearly led to the discovery of the principle of self-excitation. This was, however, achieved by other inventors first, notably Charles Wheatstone and the Siemens brothers."In 1856 Wilde established a business in Manchester as an electric-telegraph and lightning-conductor engineer, and spent some years on the development of a magneto-electric alphabetic telegraph, which was demonstrated at the international exhibition in London in 1862. In December 1863 he patented a twin-armature machine in which a magneto-electric generator provided excitation current for the field winding of another generator. These machines were made in quantity by Wilde & Co., but in use they had the disadvantage of becoming very hot. In 1867 [Described in the present paper]. he patented an entirely different type of multipolar machine, which was used for electro-deposition and arc lighting. Among his other patents was one in 1875 for the making of copper rollers for calico printing.". (Oxford DNB). Henry Wilde (1833 - 1919) was a wealthy individual from Manchester, England who used his self-made fortune to indulge his interest in electrical engineering. He invented the dynamo-electric machine, or self-energising dynamo, an invention for which Werner von Siemens is more usually credited and, in fact, discovered independently. At any rate, Wilde was the first to publish, his paper was communicated to the Royal Society by Michael Faraday in 1866. The self-energising dynamo replaces the permanent magnets of previous designs with electro-magnets and in so doing achieved an enormous increase in power. The machine was considered remarkable at the time, especially since Wilde was fond of spectacular demonstrations, such as the ability of his machine to cause iron bars to melt.

They critique Arminianism and defend orthodox Reformed theology (Calvinism). ”Consideratio Arminianismi” is a direct critique of Arminian theology, analyzing and refuting its doctrines. “Specimen Controversiarum Belgicarum” reinforces the Reformed position by outlining the confessions and beliefs of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands which stood firmly against Arminianism.

THE COPENHAGEN TRANSFER, EXCHANGE, AND LOANS BANK -
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn59579
Kjøbenhavn, Høpffner, 1737 4to. Uncut without wrappers, as issued. Three lines of text to last leaf, otherwise fine. 4 ff. Rare first publication of the first regulation of “The Kurantbank”, the first independent Danish bank. It was established on 29 October 1736 as a joint-stock company with royal charter, and its official name was The Copenhagen Transfer, Exchange, and Loans Bank. It opened for business on 11 March 1737 and was established to 1) strengthen Danish commerce and manufacturing; 2) contribute to the maintaining of the monetary system; and, 3) be completely independent from the state. “Since the beginning of the 17th century a number of banks had been set up in several countries of Northern Europe, partly deposit and transfer banks (Amsterdam 1609, Hamburg 1619), partly note-issuing credit banks (London 1694, Edinburgh 1695, and — to some extent — Stockholm 1656). With the exception of the short-lived bank of John Law all of them were founded in republics or non-absolute kingdoms. For more than a century the idea of setting up a bank had, now and then, occupied the minds of Danish governments, but without results. In the 1730'ties the prices of agricultural products, Denmark's chief exports, were extremely low. About 1735 new advisers, especially J. S. Schulin and count Fr. Danneskiold-Samsoe, persuaded the king, Christian VI, to counteract the threatening lack of foreign exchange by encouraging direct trade and home manufactures. In order to attain this a new department of trade and manufactures was formed, with the said ministers as presidents. A severe obstacle to the plans of the department was the lack of capital in the country. In order to provide the trade and manufactures of Copenhagen with cheap loans the department planned to establish a bank, and the king soon took an ardent interest in the project. First mentioned in February plans were realised in the autumn of 1736.” (Rasmussen, Kurantbankens oprettelse).
