Berlin, Julius Springer, 1927. 8vo. Contemp. hcloth. Gilt lettering to spine. In: Zeitschrift für Physik, Vol. 44. VIII,903 pp. (Entire volume offered). Heitler & London's paper: pp. 455-472. A stamp to titlepage. Clean. First appearance of grounbreaking paper which was the first to explain the nature of the chemical bound using wave mechanics and thus explaining the forces active when atoms exchange electrons and creating molecules."In June, Heitler and London published their famous paper on the hydrogen molecule in which they showed the existence of a new kind of saturable, nondynamic forces, the so-called "exchange forces" of attraction or repulsion between like particles, and developed a schematic theory of the homopolar valence which eventually BROUGHT THE WHOLE OF CHEMISTRY UNDER THE SOVEREIGNTY OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. These results not only lent weight to the concept of like particles, they also showed that like particles may be indistinguishable, that is, may lose their identity, a conclusion which follows from the uncertainty relations or, more precisely, from the impossibility of keeping track of the individual particles in case of interactions of like particles. (Jammer in "The Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanic", pp. 343 ff.).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1927 C.

First appearance Maxwell's important paper on the transformation of surfaces by bending in which there are clear links between this paper and his geometrical representation of 'lines of force' in his first paper on the theory of the electromagnetic field 'On Faraday's lines of force' which ushered in a new era of classical electrodynamics and catalyzed further progress in the mathematical field of vector calculus. Because of this, it is considered one of the most historically significant publications in the field of physics and of science in general.

Paris, Deterville, 1807. Bound in 2 hcalf, rebacked to style in morocco, spines gilt and with gilt lettering. Contemp. marbled boards. Light wear to edges. XII,564;(4),443,(1) pp. and 16 large folded engraved plates (on 15). A few quires a bit browned. A few scattered brownspots. First (and his first book) of Brongniart's influential textbook on mineralogy. "In 1807 Brongniart published Traité élémentaire de minéralogie, a work commissioned as a textbook for his and Haüy’s courses at the Faculté des Sciences and the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle. He adopted a simple scheme of classification based mainly on physical properties, but he also made extensive use of Haüy’s crystallographic work. Like other mineralogists at this time, he could not easily distinguish some fine-grained rocks from true simple minerals; but he classed clay and basalt, for example, as fausses espèces, recognizing that they were mélangées although they were too fine-grained to be analyzed. He emphasized the importance of studying the modes of occurrence of minerals as well as their properties, but firmly avoided any discussion of their origins as being too speculative. The sole exception to this was a review of divergent opinions on the aqueous or igneous origin of basalt, but even in this he avoided expressing his own opinion." (DSB II, pp. 493 ff.).Poggendorff I, 306.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1827. 4to. No wrappers. In "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von A.L. Crelle", Bd. II, Heft 2, pp. 101-196 (the whole Issue, Heft 2). Abel's paper: (2= titlepage to vol. II) + pp.101-181. First appearence of Abel's discovery of Elliptic Functions and the discovery of their double periodicity, in print. In 1826 Abel "presented his major paper on integrals to the Academy of Science in Paris on October 1926, for publication in its journal. This opaper , "Memoire sur und proprieté générale d'une classe tres-etendu de fonctions transcendentes", contained Abel's great theorem. Fourier, the secretary at the time, read the introduction to the paper and then referred the paper to Legendre and Cauchy for evaluation, the latter being chiefly responsible. The paper was long and difficult, only because it contains many new ideas. Cauchy laid it aside to favour his own work. Legendre forgot about it. After Abel's death, when his fame was established, the Academy searched for the paper, found it, and published it in 1841...Abel published other papers in Crelles Journal on equations and elliptic functions (the first offered here). These appeared from 1827 on." (Morris Kline).
