Paris, Deterville, 1807. Bound in 2 hcalf, rebacked to style in morocco, spines gilt and with gilt lettering. Contemp. marbled boards. Light wear to edges. XII,564;(4),443,(1) pp. and 16 large folded engraved plates (on 15). A few quires a bit browned. A few scattered brownspots. First (and his first book) of Brongniart's influential textbook on mineralogy. "In 1807 Brongniart published Traité élémentaire de minéralogie, a work commissioned as a textbook for his and Haüy’s courses at the Faculté des Sciences and the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle. He adopted a simple scheme of classification based mainly on physical properties, but he also made extensive use of Haüy’s crystallographic work. Like other mineralogists at this time, he could not easily distinguish some fine-grained rocks from true simple minerals; but he classed clay and basalt, for example, as fausses espèces, recognizing that they were mélangées although they were too fine-grained to be analyzed. He emphasized the importance of studying the modes of occurrence of minerals as well as their properties, but firmly avoided any discussion of their origins as being too speculative. The sole exception to this was a review of divergent opinions on the aqueous or igneous origin of basalt, but even in this he avoided expressing his own opinion." ARNOLD, MATTHEW.

lyn59795
London, 1861. Small 8vo. Original green full cloth with blondstamped boards and gilt lettering to spine. Corners bumped, upper capital worn, and gilding on spine very faded. Binding slightly dusty, but overall a very nice copy, fine and clean. (4), 104 pp. + publisher'scatalogue, 24 pp. The uncommon first printing of Arnold's groundbreaking work on translating Homer, which constitutes the most important work in the history of translation-theory of the Homeric corpus. The work revolutionized the understanding of Homer in general, of the Homeric language and all following efforts to translate the Odyssey and the Iliad. "The best-known commentary on how the Homeric text should be translated was written by the Victorian poet and literary and social critic Matthew Arnold in 1861, with many subsequent editions and reprintings. "His lectures on translating Homer were the first adequate estimate, at least in English, of the literary qualities of the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" and did much to destroy the notion of a native genius or inspired folk-poet. Homer was now seen to be a conscious artist and took his place once and for all as the chief poet of antiquity, as Dante was of the Middle Ages and Shakespeare of modern times." In his book Arnold reviewed most of the existing English translations … From this review and his own observations he extrapolated several rules for translating Homer. First, a translator should be "faithful" to the original, an ideal Arnold noted requires the translator to choose between producing a text so smooth that the reader does not realize it is a translation versus reproducing certain oddities of the original language to remind the reader of its origin. Second, a translator should seek to reproduce Homer's style and effect on the reader." (Young, The Printed Homer, 2008, p. 88). Matthew Arnold (1822 -1888) was a famous English poet and cultural critic, who worked as an inspector of schools. In 1857, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford and was the first in this position to deliver his lectures in English rather than in Latin. His first major achievement as Oxford-professor was his three lectures "On Translating Homer" that were published as they are here, in 1861. "[T]he most substantial fruits of his professorship were the three lectures "On Translating Homer" (1861)-in which he recommended Homer's plainness and nobility as medicine for the modern world, with its "sick hurry and divided aims" and condemned Francis Newman's recent translation as ignoble and eccentric..." (Encycl. Britt.). The work had an enormous effect on Homer studies and on classical scholarship, translation-practice, and literary theory in general.

[Beato & Robertson, ca 1856.] Original photograph. Side view of entrance to Valletta (Porta Reale), with two men standing on the arched entry bridge, offering perspective on the scale of the buildings. Behind the bridge is part of the fortification. Salted paper measuring 25,3 x 26,2 cm. "bridge of the Porta Reale / Malta" in contemporary hand to lower left corner. Mounted on cardboard measuring 35,5 x 43 cm with stamp and paperlabel to upper right corner, do not touch the photograph. Rare original photograph for the earliest part of Felice Beato's career where he worked closely with James Robertson, his brother-in-law. In 1853 Robertson began photographing with the British-Italian photographer Felice Beato and the two formed a partnership called Robertson & Beato either in that year or in 1854 when Robertson opened a photographic studio in Pera, Constantinople. Robertson and Beato were joined by Beato's brother, Antonio on photographic expeditions to Malta in 1854 or 1856."Felice worked especially closely with him [Robertson], consigning architectural views made in Malta and Constatinobel. We do not know when the collaboration between James Robertson and Felice Beato became a partnership. In some cases, some prints made from the same negative bear the signature "Robertson"; other bear the signature "Robertson & Beato", suggesting that Robertson was the author was the author of these negatives, and the prints were cosigned when the two men became equal partners." (40), 456, (42), (8), 448, (56) pp. Fine copy of D’Ablancourt’s translation of Tacitus’ Annals, arguably the best and most popular 17th and 18th French translation of Tacitus. “Some translators interpreted efforts to bring Tacitus’s texts into the vernacular in similarly political terms. One of those was Nicolas Perrot d’Ablancourt, who produced his innovative French version between 1640 and 1650. For him, Tacitus not only had been translated into all languages and appreciated by all peoples, he also had “given birth to all of Spanish and Italian politics. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the works of the Latin historian Caius Cornelius Tacitus, who wrote in the irst century AD, became bestsellers in Europe. From Italy to France, and in England, the Netherlands, the German Empire, and the Spanish monarchy, Tacitus’s Annals, Histories, Life of Agricola, Germania, and even the Dialogue on Orators – which in that period was not consistently attributed to him – became privileged objects of reading. Soon, a wide array of derivative works appeared. Commentaries on the text, discourses based on selected passages, aphorisms, judgments or notes, and virtually any kind of book related to Tacitus’s texts in any possible form found a printer and readers” (Bermejo, Translating Tacitus). (Entire issues offered). Tschirnhaus's papers: pp. 122-124 + pp. 433-437. Some browning as usual. First appearance of Tschirnhaus's two papers in which he used infinitisimal methods which were very close to Leibniz's method and where he tried to lay down criteria for rational quadratures in the case of conic, cubic and quadratic curves, papers that led Leibniz to publish his first paper on the differential calculus, the "Nova Methoda" in the Acta for 1684 in order to secure his priority over Tschirnhaus concerning the calculus. Leibniz discovered, when he read Tschirnhaus' papers, that Tschirnhaus had here published results showing similarity with Leibniz's invention of the calculus as he had confided to Tschirnhaus earlier, during their Parisian stay, and this without references to Leibniz. The second issue contains an original paper by LEIBNIZ: "Meditatio Juridico-Mathematica de Interusurio simplice". A few light pencil annotations to a few leaves in the beginning, otherwise internally very nice, clan, and fresh. Old owner's name and a marginal stain to half-title. XVII, (1), 486, (2) pp. The first edition of Gadamer's main work, "Truth and Method", the aim of which is to uncover the nature of human understanding. A main work of philosophical hermeneutics as well as 20th century continental philosophy in general.Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900 - 2002) is the decisive figure in the development of twentieth century hermeneutics. He is without doubt one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century, and he has had an enormous impact on philosophy, theology and aesthetics, acquiring the greatest respect and reputation in Germany and the rest of Europe, which has been far from restricted to academic circles. "Truth and Method" is intended to be a description of what we consciously or unconsciously always do, when we interpret things. "My real concern was and is philosophic: not what we do or what we ought to do, but what happens to us over and above our wanting and doing" ("Truth and Method", 2nd ed. London, 1989 p. xxviii). The work has been published twice in English and is considered inevitable in the study of hermeneutics.

MAXWELL, JAMES CLERK. - THE "MAXWELL-DISTRIBUTION"S FINAL FORM.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn41873
(London, Taylor and Francis, 1866). No wrappers, as extracted from"Proceedings of the Royal Society of London.", Vol. XV. May 16, 1866. Pp 167-171. First appearance of this seminal paper (in the abstract-version from "Proceedings"), representing the announcement of Maxwell's final "Theory of Gases" and introduces the "Maxwell Distribution" in its final form, a statistical means of describing aspects of the kinetic theory of gases, a theory, together with his electromagnetic theory, are considered to be some of the greatest advances in physics of all times. The paper offered, only 5 pages, is an abstract of a paper with the same title, which was printed in full in "Philosophical Transactions" in 1868. Everett considers this paper (1868) to be Maxwell's greatest single paper. The "abstract", which announces his discovery was printed the year before the larger paper. Maxwell's discoveries laid the foundations of special relativity and quantum mechanics. One of Maxwell's major investigations was on the kinetic theory of gases. Originating with Daniel Bernoulli, this theory was advanced by the successive labours of John Herapath, John James Waterston, James Joule, and particularly Rudolf Clausius, to such an extent as to put its general accuracy beyond a doubt; but it received enormous development from Maxwell, who in this field appeared as an experimenter (on the laws of gaseous friction) as well as a mathematician. In 1866, he formulated statistically, independently of Ludwig Boltzmann, the Maxwell-Boltzmann kinetic theory of gases. His formula, called the Maxwell distribution, gives the fraction of gas molecules moving at a specified velocity at any given temperature. In the kinetic theory, temperatures and heat involve only molecular movement. This approach generalized the previously established laws of thermodynamics and explained existing observations and experiments in a better way than had been achieved previously. Maxwell's work on thermodynamics led him to devise the Gedankenexperiment (thought experiment) that came to be known as Maxwell's demon.

POISSON, (SIMÉON-DENIS). - INTRODUCING "THE LAW OF LARGE NUMBERS"

(Paris, Bachelier), 1835-36. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 1, Séance du Lundi 14 Décembre 1835 and tome 2, Séance Lundi 11 Avril 1836. Pp. (467-) 498 and (355-) 386. (2 entire issues offered. Poisson's papers: pp. 473-495 (1835) a. pp. 377-380 (1836). First appearance of 2 importent paper in probability theory, serving as a preamble to Poissons's famous work published two years later, and with nearly the same title "Recherches sur la probabilité des jugements en matiere criminelle et en matiere civile" (1837). The paper offered introduces THE LAW OF LARGE NUMBERS (Loi universelle des Grandes nombres, pp. 478-79), a key concept in probability theory. Poisson states that all events of a moral as well as of a physical nature are subject to this universal law. His definition (in English translation) on p. 478 reads "Things of every kind obey a universal lw that we may call the law of large numbers. Its essence is that if we observe a very large number of events of the same nature, which depend on constant causes and on causes that vary irregularly, sometimes in another, 1.e., not progressively in any determined sense, then almost constant proportions will be found among numbers" (p. 478 in the first memoir)."Prior to the publication of the "Rechearces", Poisson presented his principal results and philosophical views to the Academie des Sciences in papers read at the sessions of 14 december 1835 and 11 April 1836. The first memoir became the "Préambule" of the "Rechearches" and outlined Poisson's criticism of Laplace's approach to the probability judgements, the universal applicability of the law of large numbers, and some of the results based on the Ministry of Justice's statistics.... Poisson's second memoir discussed his "Law of Large Numbers", with special attentuion to how it differed from bernoulli's theorem and how it was particularly well suited for applications to the moral sciences..." (Lorraine Daston "Classical Possibility in the Emlightment", pp. 364-65)."In Recherches sur la probabilité des jugements en matière criminelle et en matière civile (1837; (Research on the Probability of Criminal and Civil Verdicts), an important investigation of probability, the Poisson distribution appears for the first and only time in his work. Poisson’s contributions to the law of large numbers (for independent random variables with a common distribution, the average value for a sample tends to the mean as sample size increases) also appeared therein." Encl. Britannica). - In fact the law appears here, two years before, in the offered paper." (Encl. Britannica).
