Franckfurt, Zunners, 1696. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and gilt lettering and spine. A few scratches to boards and spine-ends chipped. Bookblock closely trimmed, occassionally touching text in upper margin. A few leaves browned. (20), 432, 50, (6), 76 pp. Interesting sammelband containing two rare work by German Lutheran theologian Philipp Jakob Spener both pertaining to the Spener-Pfeiffer controversy. Here Spener’s presents his response and theological defense against the attacks of August Pfeiffer who had accused Spener of dangerous innovations in theology, especially with regard to eschatology, sanctification and lay piety. Philipp Jakob Spener (1635-1705) was a prominent German Lutheran theologian, by many referred to as "Father of Pietism", known for founding the Pietism movement, which emphasized personal faith and piety over formal doctrinal orthodoxy.

AGASSIZ, LOUIS - FOUNDING MODERN GLACIAL GEOLOGY.

(Paris, Bachelier), 1837. 4to. Without wrappers. In "Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l’Académie des sciences", Vol. 5, No 14. Pp. (491-) 514. (Entire issue offered). Agassiz's paper: pp. 506-508. First printing in France of Agassiz' founding paper - starting the the study of ancient glaciation - in glaciology in which he outlines his thesis that there was an earlier geological period with widespread ice-age conditions extending from the North Pole to the Mediterranean and Caspian Seas. he concluded that the Alpine ice, now restricted to the higher valleys, once extended into the central plain, crossed it, and even mounted to the southern summits of the Jura chain. Agassiz here adopts the term "ice age" coined in 1836 by Karl Schimper as 'Eiszeit'. Agassiz submitted the offered paper to the French Academy after he in his opening address as President of the Swiss Society of Natural History in 1837 (its Séance July 1837) in his famous "Discourse at Neuchatel" gave an exposition of the evidence of glaciation. The paper offered is his own, but briefer, exposition of the famous address to the Swiss Society.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1837 G.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1819. 8vo. Contemporary half calf. Raised bands, gilt spine. Spine slightly rubbed."Annalen der Physik. Neue Folge. Hrsg. von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 61. Small stamps on verso of title-pages. (12),430,(6) pp. and 4 engraved plates. Internally clean and fine. First appearance of these milestone papers on photochemistry, as it was here the opinion "that only the absorbed light rays are active in the production of chemical changes", was expressed for the first time and "thus, he formulated the importent basic law of photochemistry, which is named after him, "the Grotthuss law of photochemical absorption" (Eder "Histo of Photography" p. 166 ff.). The extracts as offered here, from "Annalen" were published before they appeared in the Annalen der Curländischen Gesellschaft für Litteratur und Kunst."This importent Grutthussian thesis was in time so completely forgotten that John William Draper, two years after the inventionof the daguerreotype, discovered the same law and entirely independently of Grotthuss (1841). For a long time it was known as "Draper's Law of absorption" in ignorance of Grotthuss' priority....The four laws of Grotthuss (as formulated in the first paper offered) are....These laws... found little appreciation among his contemporaries...Still we must recognize the fact that the basic ideas which Grotthuss laid down in his photochemical theses were not far removed from the most modern views of physcal chemistry, since the chemical forces of affinity are essentially of an electrical nature".(Eder opt.cit. p. 168).The volume contains other importent papers Macartney & Tilesius Beobachtungen über leuchtende Thiere" (4 parts), Chladni, E.F.F. "Emmanuel College" in gilt lettering to spine. Signs of label removal from spine, very slight wear to extremities, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Rare in the publisher's binding. [Chadwick:] P. 312. [Iwanenko:] Pp. 798. First printing of Chadwick's landmark paper in which he announced the discovery of the neutron. The discovery awarded him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1935. The discovery of the neutron was of seminal importance to the evolution of Particle Physics.James Chadwick performed a series of experiments at the University of Cambridge, showing that the gamma ray hypothesis was untenable. He suggested that the new radiation consisted of uncharged particles of approximately the mass of the proton, and he performed a series of experiments verifying his suggestion. These uncharged particles were called neutrons."The discovery of the neutron completely revolutionized the physics of the atomic nucleus, both experimentally and theoretically. Since they are not electrically repelled they provide an ideal probe to study the nucleus". (Brandt, The Harvest of a Century).

GÖDEL, KURT.

Leipzig & Berlin, B.G. Teubner, 1932. 8vo. In the original wrappers. In "Ergebnisse eines mathematischen Kolloquiums, unter Mitwirkung von Kurt Gödel und Georg Nöbeling, herausgegeben von Karl Menger, Heft 3". A near mint copy, Pp. 12-13; Pp. 20-21. [Entire volume: 26 pp]. First printing of these two important papers both closely related to Gödel landmark paper Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze". Here Gödel applies the extensions of the incompleteness theorems to a wider class of formal systems : "is already the more modern first-order Peano arithmetic, the system in which Godel in his abstract described his incompleteness results. The passage [in the present paper] envisages the introduction of higher-type variables, which would have the effect of re-establishing the system P, but as one proceeds to higher and higher types, that "all the [unprovable] propositions constructed are expressible in Z (hence are number-theoretic propositions)" is an important point about incompleteness. The last sentence of the [1932] passage is Godel's first remark on set theory of substance, and significantly, his example of an "axiom of cardinality" to take the place of type extensions is essentially the one that both Abraham Fraenkel [1922] and Thoralf Skolem [1923] had pointed out as unprovable in Ernst Zermelo's [1908] axiomatization of set theory and used by them to motivate the axiom of Replacement. " (Kanamori, Gödel and Set Theory). "By invitation, in October 1929 Gödel began at tending Menger's mathematics colloquium, which was modeled on the Vienna Circle. There in May 1930 he presented his dissertation results, which he had discussed with Alfred Tarski three months ear lier, during the latter's visit to Vienna. From 1932 to 1936 he published numerous short articles in the proceedings of that colloquium (including his only collaborative work) and was coeditor of seven of its volumes. Gödel attended the colloquium quite regularly and participated actively in many discus sions, confining his comments to brief remarks that were always stated with the greatest precision." (DSB)

Amsterdam, Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1664. 12mo (128 x 67 mm). In a nice 18th century full calf binding with gilt compartments to spine, gilt boarders to bords and all edges gilt. A few scratches to boards. Hinges with wear and a bit loose. A fine and clean copy. (40), 748 pp. + five folded plates. Second edition of Varenius’ important work, in which he endeavored to lay down the general principles of the subject on a wide scientific basis, according to the knowledge of his day. It not only was a systematic geography on a scale not previously attempted, but it also contained a scheme for special, now known as regional, geography. That major work was frequently revised, and the edition of 1672 had improvements by Sir Isaac Newton. “Bernard Varenius is considered the founder of modern geographical science. In his "Geographia generalis", he distinguishes the major parts of geography, sets out several fundamental principles as well as the method according to which only general geography could vivify and make explanatory particular descriptions. Finally, his ideas on climates and the oceans are remarkable in several respects” (Antoine Bonifacio in Histoire de la Science, Pléiade). The work is divided into three sections: 1: absolute geography, 2: relative geography and 3: comparative geography. The first investigates mathematical facts relating to the earth as a whole, its figure, dimensions, motions, their measurement, etc. The second part considers the earth as affected by the sun and stars, climates, seasons, the difference of apparent time at different places, variations in the length of the day, etc. The third part treats briefly the actual divisions of the surface of the earth, their relative positions, globe and map-construction, longitude, navigation, etc. Berghman:1472.
