MAXIM, HIRAM STEVENS - THE AUTOMATIC MACHINE-GUN.

London, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1885. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Contained in the April issue of Proceedings of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, pp.167-197, with 8 plates. The whole issue offered here. Custom cloth box with gilt leather title on spine. First edition. Maxim's first announcement of his invention of the automatic machine-gun; using the energy from the recoil force to eject each spent cartridge and insert the next one, Maxim came up with the single-man operated machine-gun. Earlier types of machine-guns, as the Gatling and Gardner, consisted of multiple barrels and were powered by the manual turning of a crank, which made them very heavy and caused them to require several men in order to operate them. The invention of the Maxim-mechanism allowed for a single-barrel construction, and the new machine-gun could potentially be operated by just one man, which thus led to the modern automatic machine-gun. Scarce.

(Berlin, Haue et Spener, 1768). 4to. No wrappers as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres", tome XVII, pp. 265-322 and 1 folded engraved plate. First edition, journal issue. "One of Lambert's most famous results is the proof of the irrationality of "N" and e. It was based on the continued fractions, and two such fractions still bear his name."(DSB)."Euler's work on continued fractions was used by Johann Heinrich Lambert.....to prove that if x is a rational number (not 0), then ex and tan x cannot be rational. He thereby proved not only that ex for positive integral x is irrational, but that all rational numbers have irrational natural (base e) logarithms. From the result of tan x, it follows tha, since tan (n/4)= 1, that neither n/4 nor n can be rational.Lambert actually proved the convergencee ofthe continued fraction expansion for tan x. Berlin, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1900. Later full buckram. Stamp on verso of titlepage. Narrow inner margins (binding style with cords in margin). In: "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Band 1. VIII, 792 pp. + 3 folded engraved plates.(Entire volume offered). Planck's papers: pp. 69-122; 621-624;719-737. Internally fine and clean. First edition of these fundamental and highly influential Planck-papers in which he defines his concept of entropy and heat radiation and hereby ANTICIPATES HIS FAMOUS SEMINAL PAPER OF 1900 which redefined physics and took it to the 20th century. - The first two papers "Ueber irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge" were rewritten for the "Annalen" and was first introduced in "Sitzungsberichte d.k. Akad. Wissensch. zu Berlin"."By invoking the hypothesis of natural radiation Planck not only succeeded in obtaining a relation between the energy of the resonator and the intensity of radiation for a given wavelength or frequency, but also in defining the entropy of radiation by a proper expression such that the change of the total entropy was always a positive quantity". (Mehra, Jagdish. The historical development of quantum theory, 2001, p. 36). These results found in the period 1894-00 culminated in the present paper "Ueber irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge" and for the first time incorporates the concept of natural radiation and made a purely electromagnetic definition of entropy and of temperature.

This was in fact a central preoccupation for the rest of his life. Thus, Sengenwald published the extensive collection of Johann Gerhard’s disputations in the year of Gerhard’s theological appointment, and the year before, on the sixteenth anniversary of his father’s death (17 August 1654), Gerhard signed the dedicatory epistle to a revised edition of his father’s Genesis commentary. In 1657 he published his father’s commentary on Deuteronomy.” (Asaph Ben-Tov, Umbra in luce: A Fragmented World). Johann Gerhard was a German Lutheran theologian and prominent figure in the Lutheran tradition during the post-Reformation period. Gerhard served as a professor of theology at the University of Jena and later at the University of Helmstedt.

Entire volume offered. 336 pp. a. 1 engraved plate. Davy's paper: pp. 172-224 a. pp. 225-266. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. Browning to halftitle. A few scattered brownspots. First French edition of ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTENT CONTRIBUTIONS EVER MADE TO CHEMICAL SCIENCE, as Davy here outlined a theory of mass action, forcast the use of electricity in atomic disintegration and announced the isolation by electrolytic methods of two new elements, sodium and potassium. He used the most powerful electric battery of the time, a voltaic pile, invented 1800 by Volta."Humphrey Davy...was among the first to investigate the decomposition of water. In 1806 he delivered a Bakerian Lecture (the paper offered here in the French version) before the Royal Society of London "On some chemical agencies of electricity" (1807), which pointed out several fallacies in the theory of electrolysis. Davy's experiments on the chemical effects of electrical currents on substances, causing their decomposition, led to his discovery of several new elements: potassium (1807), sodium (1807), barium (1808), calcium (1808), and boron (1808)" (Milestone of Science No. 52) - Davy's first Bakerian Lecture won a Prize from Napoleon, even though France and England were at War. - Partington vol. (New York), An American Quarterly Review, 1956. Royal8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Offprint from "An American Quarterly Review", October, 1956. Authors presentation inscription "With the author's compliments / HK" to top of front wrapper. A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 37-56. Scarce offprint, with author's presentation inscription to front wrapper, of Kissinger's reflections of American foreign policy. The essay was written 14 years before he was elected US National Security Advisor and 18 years before he was elected the 56th United States Secretary of State and it anticipates many of his actions toward China and Soviet during the early 70ies. Kissinger states that: "There can be little doubt that the foreign policy of the United States has reached an impasse. For several years we have been groping for a concept to deal with the transformation of the cold war from an effort to build defensive barriers into a contest for the allegiance of humanity. But the new Soviet tactics, coupled with the equally unassimilated increase in the destructive potential of the new weapons technology, have led to a crisis in our system of alliances and to substantial Soviet gains among the uncommitted peoples of the world". (From the introduction). Kissinger played the dominant role in forming the United States foreign policy between 1969 and 1977, which not only led to a significant relaxation in U.S.-Soviet tensions during the Cold War but also reached a rapprochement between the United States and the People's Republic of China. He was awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for helping to establish a ceasefire and U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam.

Tucuman, Argentina, 1941. Royal8vo. Orig. printed wrappers. Offprint from "Revista. Universidad Nacional de Tucuman", Series A Matematicas y Fisica Teorica, Vol. 2, Diciembre de 1941, Nos 1 y 2. Pp. 11-15. Fine and clean. First edition of a scarce paper in the offprint version. The paper "represents the basis of the one written by the same author in collaboration with Wolfgang Pauli in 1943, in which, by following analogous lines, the proof of the non-existence of regular particle-type solutions was generalized to the case of cilyndrical geometries in Kaluza-Klein theory (Einstein & Pauli, 1943). Besides, other generalizations were subsequently presented. The (non)-existence of such solutions in classical unified field theory was undoubtedly an important criterion leading Einstein's investigations."Galvagno and Giribet)."In his search for a unified field theory that could undercut quantum mechanics, Einstein considered five-dimensional classical Kaluza-Klein theory. He studied this theory most intensively during the years 1938-1943. One of his primary objectives was finding a non-singular particle solution. In the full theory this search got frustrated, and in the x5-independent theory Einstein, together with Pauli, argued it would be impossible to find these structures."
