LEVINAS, EMMANUEL.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn41448
Paris, Vrin, 1949. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. A few pencil-underlinings in the text. With discreete stamp to title-page: "Michel Adam". A very fine and clean copy. 107, (5) pp. The uncommon first edition of this collection of early essays, constituting the first appearance in book form of two highly important articles by one of the most significant philosophers of the 20th century. The two articles were originally published in Revue Philosophique in 1932 and 1940, but only really with their appearance in book form did they exercise their great influence in France. The essays by Levinas on the phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger served to introduce this strain of philosophy in France where it would go on to dominate academic philosophy until the middle of the 1970s. As such, these essays are crucial documents to anybody with an interest in the development of 20th century continental philosophy. However, this volume has the added attraction of providing us with an insight into the genesis of Levinas' own thought. The experience of the Second World War, which Levinas spent as a prisoner of war in Germany, led him to question the ethical foundations of phenomenology and to reconsider his earlier uncritical attachment to Heidegger. It is thus by engaging critically with the conception of philosophy that is manifested in his own pre-war works that Levinas shall elaborate such masterpieces of philosophy as Totalité and Infini and Autrement qu'être.

MINOT, GEORGE R. (+) WILLIAM P. MURPHY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn51660
Chicago, American Medical Association, 1927. 8vo. Offprint in the original printed wrappers. A fine and clean copy. 25 pp. First printing, in the scarce offprint, of Minot and Murphy's paper, published the year after their landmark Nobel Prize winning 1926-paper, in which they elaborate on their 1926-study and record further observations. Minot and Murphy shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1934 with George Whipple "for their discoveries concerning liver therapy in cases of anaemia". "The brilliant discovery by Minot and Murphy in 1926, demonstrating the dramatic effectiveness of liver preparations in pernicious anemia, forms one of the landmarks in the history of therapeutics." (Satoskar, Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics)."Prompted by pathologist George Whipple's research on the feeding of liver to anemic dogs, Minot and Murphy fed liver to their patients. In a now famous 1926 paper [the present], they announced its miraculous benefits for forty-five otherwise doomed souls" (Wailoo, Drawing Blood: technology and Disease Identity in Twentieth-Century America). Up until the 1920'ies, pernicious anemia (also known as "blood thinning" disease) was a fatal disease, for which there was no cure. People who developed pernicious anemia - characterized by dangerously low counts of red blood cells - were left exhausted, hospitalized, and without the hope of being cured. "Minot's work and that of numerous pupils during the decade after 1926 initiated a new era in clinical hematology by replacing the largely morphologic studies of the blood and of the blood-forming and blood-destroying organs with dynamic measurements of their functions." (DSB).In the early 1920s, most doctors believed that pernicious anemia was caused by a toxic substance in the body, and they prescribed doses of arsenic, transfusions, or removal of the spleen as treatments. But after these remedies were administered, patients had relapses, and death was inevitable. Across the world, 6,000 lives a year were lost to the scourge of pernicious anemia."In 1923, Minot met William P. Murphy, who had graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1922 and who was to become an assistant instructor at Harvard Medical School in 1924. In their investigations to find a cure for pernicious anemia, Minot believed that research by George Whipple, a researcher whom he had known while both were at Johns Hopkins Hospital, was particularly significant. Whipple had completed experiments in which he bled dogs to make them anemic. Then he determined which foods restored their red blood cells. His results showed that red meat and certain vegetables were effective treatments, but liver was the best treatment. Minot wondered if Whipple's findings with dogs could be duplicated in humans. He and Murphy were determined to try it, and proceeded to do so with their private patients. Observing an increase in the patients' red blood cell counts, they thought they were on the right track, and decided to try the experiment with hospitalized patients which eventually led to their landmark discovery." (The Harward University Gazette, 1998).After Minot and Murphy's verification of Whipple's results in 1926, pernicious anemia victims ate or drank at least one-half pound of raw liver, or drank raw liver juice, every day. This continued for several years, until a concentrate of liver juice became available. The active ingredient in liver remained unknown until 1948, when it was isolated by chemists Karl A. Folkers.Garrison & Morton: 3140

HENRY, WILLIAM. - A CRUCIAL STEP TOWARDS THE ATOMIC THEORY - HENRY'S LAW.

lyn45163
London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1803. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1803 - Part I. Pp.29-42 and 1 engraved plate and Appendix: pp. 274-276. With titlepage to the volume Part I. Some browning to lower part of titlepage. Light foxing to the plate. First appearance of this highly importent paper in which Henry announced his discovery of the law, which later was termed "Henry's Law". The law states that when a gas is absorbed in a liquid the weight of the gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure of the gas over the liquid. This discovery contributed directly to the atomic theory of Dalton.(Parkinson: Breakthroughs: 1803 C) "Dalton's own experiments on the solution of gases and the stimulus afforded by Henry's work have been seen as crucial in the development of the atomic theory."(DSB VI p. 285).A paper by Humphrey Davy: "An Accont of some Experiemnts and Observations on the constituent Parts of certain astringent Vegetables; and on their Operating in Tanning. Read February 24, 1803", comes with. In the same volume Pp. 233-273.

WORM, CHRISTEN WILLUMSØN.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn60719
Copenhagen, (1713). Folio (348 x 240 mm). In contemporary full black calf with spine relaid and a bit later red title-label with gilt lettering to spine. Light wear to extremities primarily affecting capitals. Previous owner's name to front front free end-paper (Christian Georg von Møsting). Light occassional marginal browning throughout. Printed on good paper. A nice copy. (40), 352, 16 pp. Wanting the frontispiece. Rare funeral sermon for Danish Knud Thott (1639 - 1702), Danish Geheimrat, son of Otte Thott. Worm here praises Thott for his sense of duty and untiring diligence, as it is repeatedly emphasized how much he, unlike many of his contemporaries, detested anything related to gifts and favors in official positions. As a landowner, he was exceptionally active, and he increased and improved Gavnø in many ways. Previous owner Christian Georg von Møsting was a Danish-Norwegian Officer who was married to Cathrine Marie Juel, sister to the generals Gregers and Christian Juel, owner of Valdemar's Castle. During the 17th century, the aristocracy commissioned publications dedicated to commemorating their departed spouses and celebrating their virtuous lives. These publications likely served both as a means to instill moral conduct in society, conduct profitable transactions and last but not least fuel the circles of gossip. Funeral sermons emerged as romanticized portrayals of the nobility and the upper classes of society. Between the late 16th century and the mid-18th century, funeral sermons became a sought-after commodity in the Danish book market. Primarily intended for the deceased's family, these sermons allowed them to reflect on their own lineage. Provenance: Valdemar's Castle.

Head of spine with small loss of leather, showing headbands. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Previous owner's name in contemporary hand to front free end-paper: "Charles Rudolf / 1685". Internally nice and clean. (24), 274, 288 pp. The rare first edition of Chorier's biography of Charles de Créquy (1578–1638), a famous French soldier and diplomat, who had a rather adventurous and gripping life: "Charles I. de Blanchefort, marquis de Créquy, prince de Poix, duc de Lesdiguières (1578–1638), marshal of France, son of the last-named, saw his first fighting before Laon in 1594, and was wounded at the capture of Saint Jean d’Angély in 1621. In the next year he became a marshal of France. He served through the Piedmontese campaign in aid of Savoy in 1624 as second in command to the constable, François de Bonne, duc de Lesdiguières, whose daughter Madeleine he had married in 1595. He inherited in 1626 the estates and title of his father-in-law, who had induced him, after the death of his first wife, to marry her half-sister Françoise. He was also lieutenant-general of Dauphiné. In 1633 he was ambassador to Rome, and in 1636 to Venice. He fought in the Italian campaigns of 1630, 1635, 1636 and 1637, when he helped to defeat the Spaniards at Monte Baldo. He was killed on the 17th of March 1638 in an attempt to raise the siege of Crema, a fortress in the Milanese. He had a quarrel extending over years with Philip, the bastard of Savoy, which ended in a duel fatal to Philip in 1599; and in 1620 he defended Saint-Aignan, who was his prisoner of war, against a prosecution threatened by Louis XIII. Some of his letters are preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, and his life was written by N. Chorier [the present work]". (Encyclopedia Britannica). Barbier II, 712.

First edition of these fundamental and highly influential Planck-papers in which he defines his concept of entropy and heat radiation and hereby ANTICIPATES HIS FAMOUS SEMINAL PAPER OF 1900 which redefined physics and took it to the 20th century. - The first two papers "Ueber irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge" were rewritten for the "Annalen" and was first introduced in "Sitzungsberichte d.k. Akad. Wissensch. zu Berlin"."By invoking the hypothesis of natural radiation Planck not only succeeded in obtaining a relation between the energy of the resonator and the intensity of radiation for a given wavelength or frequency, but also in defining the entropy of radiation by a proper expression such that the change of the total entropy was always a positive quantity". (Mehra, Jagdish. The historical development of quantum theory, 2001, p. 36). These results found in the period 1894-00 culminated in the present paper "Ueber irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge" and for the first time incorporates the concept of natural radiation and made a purely electromagnetic definition of entropy and of temperature.
