London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two birds in a flowering bush. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter & Cohn, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Paris, Vrin, 1949. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. A few pencil-underlinings in the text. With discreete stamp to title-page: "Michel Adam". A very fine and clean copy. 107, (5) pp. The uncommon first edition of this collection of early essays, constituting the first appearance in book form of two highly important articles by one of the most significant philosophers of the 20th century. The two articles were originally published in Revue Philosophique in 1932 and 1940, but only really with their appearance in book form did they exercise their great influence in France. The essays by Levinas on the phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger served to introduce this strain of philosophy in France where it would go on to dominate academic philosophy until the middle of the 1970s. As such, these essays are crucial documents to anybody with an interest in the development of 20th century continental philosophy. However, this volume has the added attraction of providing us with an insight into the genesis of Levinas' own thought. The experience of the Second World War, which Levinas spent as a prisoner of war in Germany, led him to question the ethical foundations of phenomenology and to reconsider his earlier uncritical attachment to Heidegger. It is thus by engaging critically with the conception of philosophy that is manifested in his own pre-war works that Levinas shall elaborate such masterpieces of philosophy as Totalité and Infini and Autrement qu'être.

Stockholm, 1899. 8vo. In contemporary boards with the original blank front wrapper pasted on to front board. Two stamps to front board and first leaf. With authors dedication to front board: "Her Amiral Wandel / hoyaktnings fell / af / forfatteren". [Sir Admiral Wandel / with high esteem / from / the author"]. Pp. 141-166. First appearance, with dedication from the author, of Pettersson important study of the influence of ice on ocean currents. In his 1880s writings, Pettersson proved that pure ice, which moves freely in salt water, must occasionally encounter a surface current. When he resumed the investigation of ice-related problems in 1899 with the present paper, he addressed two new factors: 1) the action of ice cooling warmer water while melting, and 2) cooled water sinking owing to its higher density.Admiral Carl F. Wandel, to whom the book was given, was a Danish naval officer and polar explorer and was largely involved in hydrographic work.Wandel was regularly deployed as commander, including in 1884 and 1897 commander of the Danish ironclad Helgoland, in 1895 and 1896 as leader of the Ingolf Expedition to Greenland[2] and in 1898 as commander of the frigate HDMS Fyn to the Mediterranean. he Wandel Sea between Greenland and Svalbard, Cape Wandel and the Wandel Land nunatak in Greenland, were named after him.

Berlin, Springer, 1935. Royal8vo. As extracted from "Die Naturwissenschaften", vol. 23, 1935. No backstrip. Fine and clean. Pp. 807-812; 823-828. First edition and first announcement of Schrödinger's famous reply to the EPR-paradox (also known as Schrödinger's Cat). When in May 1935 Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen published the so-called EPR-paper in "Physical Review", they set out to demonstrate that the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics could not constitute a complete description of nature. The EPR-article prompted a number of responses, e.g. from Bohr, the co-founder of the Copenhagen School, who began writing his response immediately after the publication of the Physical Review article. It is this debate that Schrödinger participates in with his seminal paper on "The Present Situation in Quantum Mechanics", in which he presents what is now famously known as Schrödinger's Cat. Schrödinger's Cat is the name of the thought experiment that Schrödinger develops in this article and that was intended as a discussion of the EPR article. After the publication of the EPR article, Einstein and Schrödinger had begun an exchange of letters on the subject of the possibility of quantum mechanics, as interpreted by the Copenhagenists, representing reality. During this exchange of letters, Schrödinger had been inspired by Einstein's view of the problem of applying the Copenhagen interpretation of Quantum mechanics to everyday objects. But Schrödinger, in his response, took his illustration of the absurdity of the interpretation and the incompleteness of quantum mechanics a step further; he applied it to a living entity, namely a cat. Schrödinger imagines a sealed box containing a cat, a bottle of poison, a radioactive source, a Geiger counter and a hammer. When the Geiger counter detects radiation, a mechanism is switched on that makes the hammer fall; the hammer breaks the bottle, and the poison kills the cat. Because it is random, when the Geiger counter will detect radiation, and because in Quantum mechanics, physical conditions are described with the aid of a wave-function that explains all possible conditions of the system, Quantum mechanics, according to the Copenhagen interpretation, would come to the conclusion that the cat in the box is both living and dead, at the same time (the wave function is made up of a superposition of the two conditions -the cat being living and the cat being dead-; the two positions collapse into one, as soon as the system is interpreted as consisting of only one condition -either dead or living cat-, with the sole possible conclusion that the cat is both). Due to Heisenberg and Bohr's independent interpretation of Quantum theory (the "Copenhagen interpretation), Quantum theory had in 1927 developed in a direction unforeseen by Schrödinger. "Schrödinger was "concerned and disappointed" that this "transcendental, almost physical interpretation of the wave phenomena" had become the "almost universally accepted dogma."" (D.S.B. XII, p. 221). His most famous and widely used attack on this interpretation was that of "Schrödinger's Cat". This paradox of the dead-and-alive cat vigorously illustrated the absurdity of quantum mechanics and what was necessary to describe the states within this system. The thought experiment of Schrödinger's cat turned out to be hugely influential, and has become a standard paradox within both physics and philosophy.

CONDORCET, (MARIE JEAN ANTOINE NICOLAS CARITAT MARQUIS de).
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn61971
København, Tikiøbs Forlag, 1797. 8vo. Bound in a contemporary half calf binding with gilt spine and gilt title label. Minor cracks to spine. Insignificant wear to capitals. Edges of boards worn. Corners bumped. Bibliographical notes to front free endpaper. Small ownership stamp to verso of title page. Evenly browned. XII,(2),368,(1: errata) pp. The extremely rare first Danish edition of Condorcet's main work "Esquisse d'un tableau historique des progrès de l'esprit humain.1795", "the most fully developed exposition of the progress of man" (Printing and the Mind of Man, p. 149) and a main work of the Enlightenment as well as of historical thought in general. The author was the creator of what came to found the basis for the modern French system. The great French philosopher, political thinker and mathematician, M.J.A. Condorcet (1743 - 1794), played a seminal role in 18th century France. He was friends with the likes of d'Alembert, Voltaire, Turgot etc., and he greatly contributed to the social and political debates of politically turbulent France. As one of the few, he advocated a liberal economy, equality in public education as well as in gender and race etc. He preached constitutionalism, and his thoughts that are still influential today embody those of the Enlightenment and rationalism."A belief in the ultimate perfectibility of man lies at the root of all progressive thinking about the human condition. The "philosophes" and Godwin had familiarized the reading public with this notion; it was left to Condorcet to give it its finest and most durable expression. It was the gospel of nineteenth century that mankind is destined for indefinite future progress. Condorcet, looking back and then forward, saw proof of this in the growing equality between classes and nations, the intellectual, physical and moral improvement of man; and he prophesied that popular education on correct principles would strengthen and assure this progress." (PMM 246).During the French Revolution Condorcet came to play a dominating role, advocating a rationalist reconstruction of society, and he championed many liberal causes. In 1791 he became secretary of the Legislation Assembly, and the institution adopted his scheme for comprehensive state education, which later became the basis of the modern French system. In the struggle between the two political parties, the Girondists and the Montagnards, Condorcet occupied an independent role, but when he opposed the death penalty under the trial of King Louis XVI (still supporting the actual trial), and the radical Montagnards gained more power, Condorcet was branded a traitor, and in October 1793 a warrant was issued for his arrest. He now went into hiding for several months (almost a year), and it is during these months that he writes the work that was to become his most important, the main work "Esquisse..." ("Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind"), which was published posthumously, the year after his death. In 1794 Condorcet was arrested, and two days later he was found dead in his cell, -it is unknown whether he committed suicide or was murdered because of fear of fierce reactions that would definitely have occurred had the beloved man been officially sentenced to the death penalty."In the Esquisse", published after his death, Condorcet traces the history of man through epochs, the first three covering his progress from savagery to pastoral community and thence to the agricultural state. The next five span the growth of civilizations and knowledge down to Descartes, and the ninth describes the revolution of Condorcet's own lifetime, from Newton to Rousseau. The prophetic view of the tenth epoch shows Condorcet at his most original. He forecasts the destruction of inequality between nation and classes, and the improvement, intellectual, moral and physical, of human nature..., it exercised considerable influence on Comte. But it is as the most fully developed exposition of the progress of man that Condorcet's work is now remembered, and it is this which has given it its lasting appeal." (PMM 246).

A fifth letter appeared in 1926, three years after the fourth.Lullin was a correspondent of the Academy of Sciences and of central society of agriculture of France as well as of the Géorgophiles of Florence, and a member of the Society of Arts in Geneva. He has written a number of important works within the field of agricultural science (e.g. the famous "Lettres écrites d'Italie, 1812-13) and the rural condition and economy of France. In time, his focus turned to political matters, and his excellent abilities for observation, as well as his numerous relations to highly influential polititians and aristocrats, enabled him to contribute importantly to the political history of his own century. His most important work within this field is his "Lettres de Saint-James", which traces all of the opinions of the reformists; it is this work which bestowed upon him the reputation of a skilled and important historian of contemporary politics and economy.
