Cambridge, Macmillan, Barclay, and Macmillan, 1840-1846. 8vo. Bound in recent brown full cloth with gilt letting to spine. In "The Cambridge Mathematical Journal, Vol. 1-2, Second edition". Light writing in pencil to title page and very light miscolouring to borders of pages, otherwise a fine and clean copy. VI, 311, (1), VIII, (2), II, 284 pp. + folded plates. First printing of four early papers by the influential British mathematician and philosopher. As the inventor of Boolean logic-the basis of modern digital computer logic-Boole is regarded in hindsight as a founder of the field of computer science. His earliest published paper was the "Researches in the theory of analytical transformations, with a special application to the reduction of the general equation of the second order." Printed in the Cambridge Mathematical Journal in February 1840 (Volume 2, no. 8, pp. 64-73), and it led to a friendship between Boole and D.F. Gregory, the editor of the journal, which lasted until the death of the latter in 1844.In 1840 he began to contribute to the recently founded Cambridge Mathematical Journal and also to the Royal Society, which awarded him a Royal Medal in 1844 for his papers on operators in analysis; he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1857."In papers in the Cambridge Mathematical Journal in 1841 and 1843 [The present], Boole dealt with linear transformations. The algebraic fact had been partly perceived by Lagrange and by Gauss, but Boole's argument drew attention to the (relative) invariance of the discrimiant ab - h2, and also to the absolute invariants of the transformation. This was the starting point of the theory of invariants, so rapidly and extensively developed in the second half of the nineteenth century." (DSB)

ARNOLD, MATTHEW.

London, 1861. Small 8vo. Original green full cloth with blondstamped boards and gilt lettering to spine. Corners bumped, upper capital worn, and gilding on spine very faded. Binding slightly dusty, but overall a very nice copy, fine and clean. (4), 104 pp. + publisher'scatalogue, 24 pp. The uncommon first printing of Arnold's groundbreaking work on translating Homer, which constitutes the most important work in the history of translation-theory of the Homeric corpus. The work revolutionized the understanding of Homer in general, of the Homeric language and all following efforts to translate the Odyssey and the Iliad. "The best-known commentary on how the Homeric text should be translated was written by the Victorian poet and literary and social critic Matthew Arnold in 1861, with many subsequent editions and reprintings. "His lectures on translating Homer were the first adequate estimate, at least in English, of the literary qualities of the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" and did much to destroy the notion of a native genius or inspired folk-poet. Homer was now seen to be a conscious artist and took his place once and for all as the chief poet of antiquity, as Dante was of the Middle Ages and Shakespeare of modern times." In his book Arnold reviewed most of the existing English translations … From this review and his own observations he extrapolated several rules for translating Homer. First, a translator should be "faithful" to the original, an ideal Arnold noted requires the translator to choose between producing a text so smooth that the reader does not realize it is a translation versus reproducing certain oddities of the original language to remind the reader of its origin. Second, a translator should seek to reproduce Homer's style and effect on the reader." (Young, The Printed Homer, 2008, p. 88). Matthew Arnold (1822 -1888) was a famous English poet and cultural critic, who worked as an inspector of schools. In 1857, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford and was the first in this position to deliver his lectures in English rather than in Latin. His first major achievement as Oxford-professor was his three lectures "On Translating Homer" that were published as they are here, in 1861. "[T]he most substantial fruits of his professorship were the three lectures "On Translating Homer" (1861)-in which he recommended Homer's plainness and nobility as medicine for the modern world, with its "sick hurry and divided aims" and condemned Francis Newman's recent translation as ignoble and eccentric..." (Encycl. Britt.). The work had an enormous effect on Homer studies and on classical scholarship, translation-practice, and literary theory in general.

London, Printed for the Author, 1665. 4to. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities. Wormtract to lower outer margin of first 20 ff. occassionally touching text, otherwise a good copy. (8), 128, (16), 225, (3), 43, (3), 56, (8), 19, (3), 44, (2), 67 pp. Rare first edition of Griffith’s sermons. William Griffith (1587 – 1673) born at Treflan near Caernarvon, had a notable ecclesiastical career marked by education and controversy. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford and Jesus College, Cambridge he was ordained as a priest in 1607. He served as rector in Foscott, Buckinghamshire and held positions in London, where his anti-Puritan sermons caused conflict. Griffith preached notable funeral sermons, including those of Sir Richard Bulkeley in 1621 and Katherine Lewis in 1644, and participated in the burial of Archbishop John Williams in 1650. He became rector of Trefdraeth (1626), dean of Bangor (1634), and faced allegations of neglecting his wife in 1635. Appointed as the king's chaplain and later Bishop of Ossory, Ireland his tenure was disrupted by the Civil War, leading him to flee Ireland. He resumed his bishopric after the Restoration in 1661, becoming the first to pray publicly for King Charles II in Ireland. (see Dictionary of Welsh Biography)

Königsberg, Nicolovius, 1797. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. All edges coloured in red. Wear to spine. Small stamp to verso of title-page, internally nice and clean. X, 59, (4), 64-190, (1) pp. First edition, constituting the second part of Kant’s Metaphysik der Sitten (Metaphysics of Morals), published in the same year as his ”Rechtslehre”. The present work deals with duties of virtue - those moral obligations which cannot be externally enforced but belong to the inner sphere of freedom. Kant systematically examines both duties to oneself (self-preservation, cultivation of talents, self-respect) and duties to others (beneficence, gratitude, sympathy, respect). In doing so, he provides one of the most influential formulations of a deontological ethics grounded in autonomy and reason. Warda 176

Some offsetting throughout. A very nice and clean copy. XII, 377 pp. First appearance of this important issue of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters' Journal containing some of the most influential Danish contributions to science from the period: - Thomsen's "Bidrag til et thermochemisk System" undoubtly being the main contribution by a Dane in chemistry in the 19th Century. The paper from 1852 is famous as it is the first statement of a new thermochemical nomenclatura, and the paper contains the first enunciation of the thermochemical affinity principle, which states that chemical affinity, or the attraction between substances, can be measured by the heat evolved when bodies combine. His fundamental thought was that the evolution of heat accompanying a chemical reaction (which he calls 'varmetoning', equivalent to enthalpy change) is an exact expression of the chemical affinity of the reaction.- Colding's "Undersøgelse over Vanddampene og deres bevægende Kraft i Dampmaskinen" being his major contribution to the development of the steam engine.

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Showing 2 adults and one baby bird on a branch. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Spine worn and a bit cocked. Internally nice and clean. First edition of Hamsun's masterpiece, generally considered his best work, one of the most important literary productions of the late 19th century, and together with "Hunger", Hamsun's most famous book. "Pan" profoundly influenced the entire trajectory of modern literature and with its brilliant and intimate descriptions of nature, it also pioneered the Pantheism of 20th century literature, as well as creating a new kind of Neo-Romanticist novels. Together with "Hunger (from 1890), "Pan" pioneered modern psychological literature and the techniques now known as "stream of consciousness" and "interior monologue".Few other authors of the period have had the kind of impact that Hamsun had. Ernest Hemingway attempted to write in the style of Hamsun, as did Henry Miller who considered him his teacher. Thomas Mann loved him and considered him the most important author of the period, and Hermann Hesse referred to him as his favourite author. The Russian authors of the period, e.g. Bosris Pasternak, were profoundly influenced by his books, and Andre Gide considered him superior to Dostojevski. Everyone read him, and everyone was influenced by him, Kafka, Brecht, Gorky, Wells...According to his American bibliographer Robert Ferguson (in 1987), Hamsun is "one of the most influential and innovative literary stylists of the past hundred years". Isaac Bashevis Singer called Hamsun "the father of the modern school of literature in his every aspect-his subjectiveness, his fragmentariness, his use of flashbacks, his lyricism. The whole modern school of fiction in the twentieth century stems from Hamsun", and Hemingway stated that "Hamsun taught me to write". Enstein said about him "I consider him to be one of the greatest men of our period", and Henry Miller said that it was reading Hamsun that prevented him from committing suicide. Maxin Girkij wrote to him in a letter "- I tell you this quite sincerely, at this moment you are the greatest artist in Europe; there is no one who can compare with you.", and Thomas Mann considered himself a disciple of Hamsun.Hamsun was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. By critics, Hamsun specialist, and Hamsun lovers, "Pan" is generally considered his greatest achievement, although "Hunger" is better known by laymen.

London, Macmillian, 1962. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 196, October - December. Stamp to pasted down front end-paper and title-page. A fine copy. Pp. 1080-1. [Entire colume: LII, 1346 pp.]. First appearance of Shapiro's famous paper in which he sought to describe a bathtub vortex with the Coriolis Effect. This eventually gave birth to the urban myth that a toilet vortex always will have a counter clockwise flow in the Northern Hemisphere. The Coriolis effect on a micro level is still disputed and has never been satisfyingly confirmed or rejected. Scientists were aware that Earth's rotation alters the trajectory of objects in motion. This phenomenon causes low-pressure weather systems to twist counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. The Coriolis effect, as it's known, had long been well documented as the cause of hurricanes and tornadoes. But despite previous attempts, no one had shown that the effect-first described in 1835 by the French engineer and mathematician Gustave-Gaspard Coriolis-works on very small scales as well. Though in theory it should influence bathwater's exit through a drain, the Coriolis effect was thought to be too small to see."For his experiment, Shapiro used a circular, flat-bottomed tub with a centered drain hole three-eighths of an inch in diameter to which he attached a 20-foot length of hose, plugged with a stopper at the end. He filled the tank six inches deep with clean, room-temperature water. Small variations-air movement, a temperature change, a surface disturbance-create buoyancy currents that overshadow the Coriolis effect. So Shapiro did much tinkering to cancel out these possible sources of interference-covering the tank with a sheet of plastic to keep out air currents, for example, and carefully controlling the room's temperature. He also filled the tank by swirling water in clockwise, so that if the water drained counterclockwise, the direction would not have been influenced by how the tank was filled. After 24 hours of letting the water settle, Shapiro carefully pulled the plug from the end of the hose, gently placing above the drain a small float made of two crossed slivers of wood an inch long. It took about 20 minutes for the tub to drain completely. For the first 12 to 15 minutes, the float remained motionless. Then it began to rotate almost imperceptibly, counterclockwise, reaching a peak speed of approximately one revolution every three to four seconds. Proving that the Coriolis effect can be detected in a bathtub-size tank, albeit under carefully controlled conditions, was a remarkable achievement. At MIT's latitude of 42°, the effect was "only thirty-millionths that of gravity, which is so small that it will be overcome by filling and even temperature differences and water impurities," reported one of many newspapers and periodicals covering the experiment. Shapiro's results were published in Nature and verified by colleagues who used his technique to demonstrate a clockwise flow in the Southern Hemisphere. The findings fascinated a curious public of all ages. Shapiro would also become known for explaining and improving the aerodynamics of golf ball dimples, as well as for helping to develop the intra-aortic balloon for heart patients and devices to treat blood clots, asthma, emphysema, and glaucoma. But for more than a decade after the bathtub test, he would receive letters and newspaper clippings from all over the world about what was dubbed the "bathtub vortex" controversy. Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1694. Uncut in contemp. blank boards. Title handwritten on spine. Spine a little rubbed. (22),307 pp. and (8),159 pp. Textillustrations in woodcut illustrating Cartesian physics and world system. A large copy, few marginal brownspots. Previous owners name on fly-leaf, Vilhelm Maar, Danish historian of medicine. First Latin edition (The French original from 1690 Voyage du Monde de Descartes) of this imaginary travel to find Descartes on the moon and in the upper spheres. The work is one of the most importent anti-Cartesian polemics of the 1690's and it attacs the whole of Descartes system in a satirical way."It aimes principally at the sharp Cartesian distinction between body and soul, related in a satirical fashion the voyage of the disembodied souls of the narrator, of Mersanne, and of another old friend of Descartes in the upper spheres. On their way to visit Descartes in the third heaven, they meet the souls of Aristotle and the disciples of descartes (clearly refelcting here the philosophical opinions of Gabriel Daniel himself). One of the articles of that treaty stipulates that the Cartesians will refer to Aristotle with more respect, whereas the Aristotelians will refrain from calling Descartes "Enthusiast", "Madman", "Heretick" or "Atheist" - all of these evidently labels commonly used by the opponents of Descartes at that time." (Michael Heyd in "Be Sober and Reasonable"). The work was published anonymous and earlier sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe. -

London, Taylor & Francis, 1924. Full buckram. Spine with gilt lettering. Stamps on titlepage. Bookmark of "Pomona College Library" on inside frontcover. In: "The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science", Vol. XLVIII, Sixth Series. VIII,1144 pp., textillustr. and 27 plates. (Entire volume offered). Stoner's paper: pp. 719-736. First apperance of Stoner's importent paper in which he formulated "Stoner's Rule", a paper which inspired Pauli to his Exclusion principle in 1925. "The publication of his paper (the paper offered) brought Stoner rapid recognition. His theory, however, was subsequently overshadowed by the exclusion principle of Wolfgang Pauli, who, exploiting Stoner’s insight and applying it to individual electrons, transformed it into a general and powerful analytic tool." (DSB)."In 1924 (in the paper offered) Stoner had proposed the following rule: "The number of electrons in each completed shall is equal to double the sum of the inner quantum numbers".... Stoner's rule says: a shell corresponds to a fixed n and the number of electrons in that shell, if completetely filled. equals twice N.... Why twice ?... Here Pauli takes over."(Pais "Inward Bound", p. 273.)."Soon after Bohr developed his initial configuration, Arnold Sommerfeld in Munich realized the need to characterize the stationary states of the electron in the hydrogen atom by means of a second quantum number-the socalled angular-momentum quantum number. Bohr immediately applied this discovery to many-electron atoms and in 1922 produced a set of more detailed electronic configurations. In turn, Sommerfeld went on to discover the third, or inner, quantum number, thus enabling the British physicist Edmund Stoner to come up with an even more refined set of electronic configurations in 1924..... Stoner assumed that three quantum numbers could be specified in many electron atoms. In any case, Stoner’s scheme solved certain problems present in Bohr’s configurations. For example, Bohr had assigned phosphorus the configuration 2,4,4,4,1, but this failed to explain the fact that phosphorus shows valencies of three and five. Stoner’s configuration for phosphorus was 2,2,2,4,2,2,1, which easily explains the valencies, since it becomes plausible that either the two or the three outermost subshells of electrons form bonds."
