Genève & Paris, 1820-23. 8vo. Bound in one nice, cont. half calf with faint gilt lettering and gilt blue title-label to spine. Corners a bit worn. Internally nice, with only a bit of minor scattered brownspotting. 103, (1); 142, (4); 185, (3); 193, (3) pp., 2 folded plates. First editions of these four first "Letters", by the influential Suiss Agronomer, Lullin de Chateauvieux. In their time, these letters were considered an important contribution to the analysis of contemporary affairs and economic and political thought. A fifth letter appeared in 1926, three years after the fourth.Lullin was a correspondent of the Academy of Sciences and of central society of agriculture of France as well as of the Géorgophiles of Florence, and a member of the Society of Arts in Geneva. He has written a number of important works within the field of agricultural science (e.g. the famous "Lettres écrites d'Italie, 1812-13) and the rural condition and economy of France. In time, his focus turned to political matters, and his excellent abilities for observation, as well as his numerous relations to highly influential polititians and aristocrats, enabled him to contribute importantly to the political history of his own century. His most important work within this field is his "Lettres de Saint-James", which traces all of the opinions of the reformists; it is this work which bestowed upon him the reputation of a skilled and important historian of contemporary politics and economy. Barbier: 1261.

Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1930. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 190, No 9, Entire issues offered including the title page of tome 190. No backstrip. Pp. 582-84. [Entire issue: Pp. 539-900] First printing of Ambarzumian and Iwanenko's landmark paper in which they first proposed the idea that in the course of interactions of elementary particles with nonzero rest masses, some of them might be created or annihilated. The idea proposed is regarded as being a cornerstone of contemporary quantum field theory. Higgs later applied some of Ambarzumian and Iwanenko's discoveries which eventually resulted in the discovery of the Higgs Boson, often referred to as the 'God Particle'. The idea of the creation of particles with nonzero rest masses was absolutely new and did not follow from classical notions and is now a part of the Standard Model.

Kjøbenhavn, P.G. Philipsen, 1841. 8vo. Elegant later (ca. 1920) brown half calf with four raised bands and gilt morocco title-label to gilt spine. With Paul Rubow's ownership signature to front free end-paper. Clean and fresh both in- and externally, with no signs of wear to the exterior and only faint brown spots to a few pages. (4), 350 pp. First edition of Kierkegaard's dissertation, as it appeared in the normal trade, without the preliminary Theses, which were intended for academics attending the defence. Kierkegaard’s dissertation constitutes the culmination of three years’ intensive studies of Socrates and “the true point of departure for Kierkegaard’s authorship” (Brandes). The work is of the utmost importance in Kierkegaard’s production, not only as his first academic treatise, but also because he here introduces several themes that will be addressed in his later works. Among these we find the question of defining the subject of cognition and self-knowledge of the subject. The maxim of “know thyself” will be a constant throughout his oeuvre, as is the theory of knowledge acquisition that he deals with here. The dissertation is also noteworthy in referencing many of Hegel’s theses in a not negative context, something that Kierkegaard himself would later note with disappointment and characterize as an early, uncritical use of Hegel. Another noteworthy feature is the fact that the thesis is written in Danish, which was unheard of at the time. Kierkegaard felt that Danish was a more suitable language for the thesis and had to petition the King in order to gain permission to submit it in Danish rather than Latin. This in itself contains as certain irony, as the young Kierkegaard was known to express himself poorly and very long-winded in written Danish. Both stylistically and thematically, Kierkegaard’s dissertation is a seedbed of his subsequent work and especially a clear precursor for his magnum opus Either-Or that is to be his next publication. The year 1841 is a momentous one in Kierkegaard’s life. It is the year that he completes his dissertation and commences his sojourn in Berlin, but it is also the defining year in his personal life, namely the year that he breaks off his engagement with Regine Olsen. And finally, it is the year that he begins writing Either-Or In many ways, Either-Or is born directly out of “The Concept of Irony” and is the work that brings the theory of Irony to life. Part One of the dissertation concentrates on Socrates as interpreted by Xenophon, Plato, and Aristophanes, with a word on Hegel and Hegelian categories. Part Two is a more synoptic discussion of the concept of irony in Kierkegaard’s categories, with examples from other philosophers. The work constitutes Kierkegaard’s attempt at understanding the role of irony in disrupting society, and with Socrates understood through Kierkegaard, we witness a whole new way of interpreting the world open before us. Wisdom is not necessarily fixed, and we ought to use Socratic ignorance to approach the world without the inherited bias of our cultures. Kierkegaard's dissertation appeared in two states – one with the four pages of “Theses”, for academics of the university, whereas the copies without the theses were intended for ordinary sale. These sales copies also do not have “Udgivet for Magistergraden” and “theologisk Candidat” on the title-page. Himmelstrup 8.

New York & London, Harper & Brothers Publishers, (1944). Royal 8vo. Both volumes in the orig. full cloth bindings. Some wear to capitals and spines a bit soiled. Magazine pictures of Gunnar and Alva Myrdal pasted on to front free end-paper. Internally nice and clean, apart from traces of old paper-clipsto front free end-paper and title-page of volume one. LV, (1), 705, (1) pp; XII pp. pp. (706) - 1483. First edition of this epoch-making study of race-relations in America. In the early 1940'ies the Swedish Nobel Prize winner for Economics (1974), Gunnar Myrdal (1898-1987) was funded by the Carnegie Foundation to map out the problems that African-Americans had to face in order to fully participate in the American society at the time. This resulted in an enormous and very detailed work, for which Myrdal is famous today. It immediately became very popular, and it sold more than 100.000 copies (25 printings of the first edition appeared) before the second edition appeared in 1965. Several other editions and extracts in other publications appeared before 1965. Nine issues of the work appeared within the first year. The work had an enormous direct effect on the general view on racial issues in America, and it must be said to have paved the way for what we now consider natural policies of racial integration and affirmative action. The view that underlies this landmark work is that democracy will triumph over racism. The effects of this work are difficult to underestimate, and it not only changed the view on racial issues in America, it also directly influenced the US Supreme Court in 1954 to outlaw racial segregation in public schools (Brown versus Board of Education). In 1950 Myrdal was a signatory of the UNESCO statement "The Race Question".Assarsson-Rizzi and Bohrn: Gunnar Myrdal. A Bibliography, 1919-1981: No. 127a.

Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn36355
Paris, Mallet-Bachelier, 1859. 8vo. Contemporary half calf. XXIV,342 pp. First edition of this important textbook on function theory. Charles Auguste Briot (1817-1882) was one of the most eminent teachers of his time. Already during his time in elementary school Briot had decided that he wanted to be a mathematics teacher. He entered the École Normale Supériure in 1838 were he was ranked second. Just three years later he received agrégation in mathematics with the highest rank. In March 1842 he received his doctorate of science, having presented his thesis on the movement of a solid body round a fixed point. Despite his marked academic success in research, Briot still wanted to follow his chosen career as a teacher. He first obtained a professorship at the Orléans Lycée and afterward at University of Lyons, where he re-encountered his school friend Jean-Claude Bouquet, with whom he collaborated throughout his career.During the years 1814-1831 Agustin Cauchy created the basic framework of complex function theory. The results obtained by Cauchy were, however, still only to be found throughout his numerous journal papers, and although Cauchy is known for having stimulated the development of mathematical rigor throughout the field, his own research papers often used intuitive, not rigorous, methods. The joint scientific work of Briot and Bouquet was a profound study and clarification of the analytic work of Cauchy. In a memoire that has remained famous since its publication in 1853, they proposed to establish precisely the conditions that a function must fulfill in order to be developable into an entire series. They also perfected the analysis by which Cauchy had, for the first time, established the existence of the integral of a differential equation. They opened the way to research on singular points and showed their importance for knowledge of the integral. All this work culminated in their extremely influential text book 'Théorie des fonctions doublement périodiques et, en particulier, des fonctions elliptiques'. This work played a decisive role in spreading Cauchy's methods and results to European mathematicians, and for a long time it remained the standard text of the French School. It was translated into German in 1862, and went through several editions. For his outstanding contributions to mathematics the Académie des Sciences in Paris awarded Briot their Poncelet Prize in 1882 shortly before he died.

La Haye, G. Vervloet, 1831. Bound uncut w. the orig. front wrapper in a very nice private hcalf w. raised bands and gilt ornamentations on back (Petersen & Petersen). First blank leaf partly pasted on to inside of front wrapper. Apart from a bit of soiling to front wrapper, an excellent copy. The rare Haag-edition, printed the same year as the first edition (Paris, 1831), which is "importante et rare" (Carteret I:403). "Marion de Lorme" is one of Hugo's early works and the first play to be accepted for production under Hugo's own name. The work portrays the French monarchy - a controversial topic at the time - and due to this portrayel being far from flattering, the work was censored and banned. Rare with the orig. wrapper and in uncut condition. On the verso of the first blank leaf is a contemporary handwritten inscription, stating that the previous owner (Ch. First appearance of this grounbreaking paper which was the first to explain the nature of the chemical bound using wave mechanics and thus explaining the forces active when atoms exchange electrons and create molecules."In June, Heitler and London published their famous paper on the hydrogen molecule in which they showed the existence of a new kind of saturable, nondynamic forces, the so-called "exchange forces" of attraction or repulsion between like particles, and developed a schematic theory of the homopolar valence which eventually BROUGHT THE WHOLE OF CHEMISTRY UNDER THE SOVEREIGNTY OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. These results not only lent weight to the concept of like particles, they also showed that like particles may be indistinguishable, that is, may lose their identity, a conclusion which follows from the uncertainty relations or, more precisely, from the impossibility of keeping track of the individual particles in case of interactions of like particles. SERTÜRNER, FRIEDRICH. - THE ISOLATION OF MORPHINE AND COINING THE WORD 'MORPHINE'.

Paris, Crochard, 1817. No wrappers. Extract from "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 5, Cahier 1. With titlepage and htitle to vol. 5. Pp. 21-42. First French edition (the German paper issued simutaneously in Gilbert's Annalen) of this groundbreaking paper claiming to be the first to announce the isolation of pure morphine from opium. This process marks an importent step in the beginnings of alkaloid chemistry, and the isolation of morphine is the first isolation of an alkali of vegetable origin. In his paper Sertuerner coined the word "morphine" after Morpheus (the Greek God of sleep). The isolation of morphine from opium, the first isolation of a natural product, was a seminal event in the development of pharmacology as an independent discipline. The purification kick-started natural product chemistry and quickly led to the isolation of a host of other alkaloids. Within a few years, in 1827, Heinrich Emanuel Merck of Darmstadt began selling morphine, resulting in the development of the eponymous company. Sertürner reported his first observations on Opium in 1805, which was mainly concerned with the constituent of meconic acid, but "it was only in 1817...(in the paper offered) that he unequivocally reported the isolation of pure morphine. He prepared it by extracting opium with hot water and precipitating morphine with ammonia. he obtained colorless crystals, poorly soluble in water, but soluble in acids and alcohol. In order to establish that his crystals carried the pharmacological activity of raw opium, Sertuerner tested them on himself and three boys, "none older than seventeen.". It was a near-catastrophe." (Ryan J. Huxtable a. K.W. Schwarz).DEROSNE (1803) made claim of priority in the discovery of opium, but he only "prepared a crude extract of opium with alcohol and water, and obtained by potassium carbonate preciipitation, what he called "sel de Derosne". Derosne's alkaloidal fraction lacked narcotic properties, and was probably largely narcotine (also known as noscapine), perhaps with meconic acid, both abundant in opium." (Huxtable & Schwarz).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1817 C,The offered issue contains another importent paper by Alexander v. Humboldt: "Sur les Lignes isothermes. (Extrait)", pp. 102-111 and a large folded engraved plate. Here Humboldt introduced "Isothermes" in meteorology. This extract issued at the same time as the larger memoir which appeared in "Mémoires de physique et de chimie de la Société d’Arcueil" (1817).

The issue no 25: pp. 2181-2248 lacks the first leaf, no affecting the paper. Titlepages with a faint stamp. First printing of these papers of seminal importance to the evolution of particle physics - the results of these investigations immediately lead the way to the discovery of the neutron. They found that the 'Beryllium radiation', discovered by Bothe and Becker, ejected protons from a paraffin target. This discovery was amazing because photons have no mass. However, the Joliot-Curies interpreted the results as the action of photons on the hydrogen atoms in paraffin. They used the analogy of the Compton Effect, in which photons impinging on a metal surface eject electrons. The trouble was that the electron was 1,836 times lighter than the proton and, therefore, recoiled much more easily than the heavier proton after a collision with a gamma photon. When James Chadwick reported to Lord Rutherford on the Joliot-Curies’ results, Lord Rutherford exclaimed, "I do not believe it!" Chadwick immediately repeated the experiments at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England. He not only bombarded the hydrogen atoms in paraffin with the beryllium emissions, but also used helium, nitrogen, and other elements as targets. By comparing the energies of recoiling charged particles from different targets, he proved that the beryllium emissions contained a neutral component with a mass approximately equal to that of the proton. He called it the neutron.

CONDORCET, (MARIE JEAN ANTOINE NICOLAS CARITAT MARQUIS de).

København, Tikiøbs Forlag, 1797. 8vo. Bound in a contemporary half calf binding with gilt spine and gilt title label. Minor cracks to spine. Insignificant wear to capitals. Edges of boards worn. Corners bumped. Bibliographical notes to front free endpaper. Small ownership stamp to verso of title page. Evenly browned. XII,(2),368,(1: errata) pp. The extremely rare first Danish edition of Condorcet's main work "Esquisse d'un tableau historique des progrès de l'esprit humain.1795", "the most fully developed exposition of the progress of man" (Printing and the Mind of Man, p. 149) and a main work of the Enlightenment as well as of historical thought in general. The author was the creator of what came to found the basis for the modern French system. The great French philosopher, political thinker and mathematician, M.J.A. Condorcet (1743 - 1794), played a seminal role in 18th century France. He was friends with the likes of d'Alembert, Voltaire, Turgot etc., and he greatly contributed to the social and political debates of politically turbulent France. As one of the few, he advocated a liberal economy, equality in public education as well as in gender and race etc. He preached constitutionalism, and his thoughts that are still influential today embody those of the Enlightenment and rationalism."A belief in the ultimate perfectibility of man lies at the root of all progressive thinking about the human condition. The "philosophes" and Godwin had familiarized the reading public with this notion; it was left to Condorcet to give it its finest and most durable expression. It was the gospel of nineteenth century that mankind is destined for indefinite future progress. Condorcet, looking back and then forward, saw proof of this in the growing equality between classes and nations, the intellectual, physical and moral improvement of man; and he prophesied that popular education on correct principles would strengthen and assure this progress." (PMM 246).During the French Revolution Condorcet came to play a dominating role, advocating a rationalist reconstruction of society, and he championed many liberal causes. In 1791 he became secretary of the Legislation Assembly, and the institution adopted his scheme for comprehensive state education, which later became the basis of the modern French system. In the struggle between the two political parties, the Girondists and the Montagnards, Condorcet occupied an independent role, but when he opposed the death penalty under the trial of King Louis XVI (still supporting the actual trial), and the radical Montagnards gained more power, Condorcet was branded a traitor, and in October 1793 a warrant was issued for his arrest. He now went into hiding for several months (almost a year), and it is during these months that he writes the work that was to become his most important, the main work "Esquisse..." ("Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind"), which was published posthumously, the year after his death. In 1794 Condorcet was arrested, and two days later he was found dead in his cell, -it is unknown whether he committed suicide or was murdered because of fear of fierce reactions that would definitely have occurred had the beloved man been officially sentenced to the death penalty."In the Esquisse", published after his death, Condorcet traces the history of man through epochs, the first three covering his progress from savagery to pastoral community and thence to the agricultural state. The next five span the growth of civilizations and knowledge down to Descartes, and the ninth describes the revolution of Condorcet's own lifetime, from Newton to Rousseau. The prophetic view of the tenth epoch shows Condorcet at his most original. He forecasts the destruction of inequality between nation and classes, and the improvement, intellectual, moral and physical, of human nature..., it exercised considerable influence on Comte. But it is as the most fully developed exposition of the progress of man that Condorcet's work is now remembered, and it is this which has given it its lasting appeal." (PMM 246).

Kiel, bey dem Verfasser, 1785. 8vo. In contemporary paper-covered boards (original?) with paper-title label to spine. Wear and scratches to extremities, internally very nice and clean. Printed on good paper. (2), 181, (1) pp. + 7 engraved plates numbered I-VII. First edition of Hirschfeld’s work, printed on good paper, on his travels in Swizerland beautifully illustrated with plates depicting costumes and houses of Switzerland. Christian Cay Lorenz Hirschfeld (1742-1792), a key figure in the Romantic garden movement, was deeply influenced by his time in Switzerland. His stay in Bern (1765-1767) exposed him to the region’s natural beauty and landscapes. Hirschfeld's ideas, shaped by the picturesque Swiss scenery, contributed to the spread of the English landscape garden style across Europe.

FREGE, GOTTLOB.

Leipzig, Hirzel, 1897. 8vo. Unbound, marbled paper strip to spine. In "Verhandlungen der Königlich Sächsischen Gesellschaft der Wissenschuften zu Leipzig", volume 48, pp.362-378. Fine and clean. First edition. In this paper Frege eagerly defended his conceptual notation against Peano's. Though Frege preceded both Schröder and Peano, neither paid much attantion to Frege's work. This neglet has been attributed to Frege's repulsive symbolism. (See Cajori: A History of Mathematical Notations, paragraph 687). Modern notation in logic originates mainly from Peano's system.
