Berlin, Julius Springer, 1927. 8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Vol. 44. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end paper, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 455-472. [Entire volume: VIII,903 pp.]. First appearance of grounbreaking paper which was the first to explain the nature of the chemical bound using wave mechanics and thus explaining the forces active when atoms exchange electrons and creating molecules."In June, Heitler and London published their famous paper on the hydrogen molecule in which they showed the existence of a new kind of saturable, nondynamic forces, the so-called "exchange forces" of attraction or repulsion between like particles, and developed a schematic theory of the homopolar valence which eventually BROUGHT THE WHOLE OF CHEMISTRY UNDER THE SOVEREIGNTY OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. These results not only lent weight to the concept of like particles, they also showed that like particles may be indistinguishable, that is, may lose their identity, a conclusion which follows from the uncertainty relations or, more precisely, from the impossibility of keeping track of the individual particles in case of interactions of like particles. London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Showing 2 adults and one baby bird on a branch. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Some offsetting throughout. A very nice and clean copy. XII, 377 pp. First appearance of this important issue of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters' Journal containing some of the most influential Danish contributions to science from the period: - Thomsen's "Bidrag til et thermochemisk System" undoubtly being the main contribution by a Dane in chemistry in the 19th Century. The paper from 1852 is famous as it is the first statement of a new thermochemical nomenclatura, and the paper contains the first enunciation of the thermochemical affinity principle, which states that chemical affinity, or the attraction between substances, can be measured by the heat evolved when bodies combine. His fundamental thought was that the evolution of heat accompanying a chemical reaction (which he calls 'varmetoning', equivalent to enthalpy change) is an exact expression of the chemical affinity of the reaction.- Colding's "Undersøgelse over Vanddampene og deres bevægende Kraft i Dampmaskinen" being his major contribution to the development of the steam engine.

Contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Spine worn and a bit cocked. Internally nice and clean. First edition of Hamsun's masterpiece, generally considered his best work, one of the most important literary productions of the late 19th century, and together with "Hunger", Hamsun's most famous book. "Pan" profoundly influenced the entire trajectory of modern literature and with its brilliant and intimate descriptions of nature, it also pioneered the Pantheism of 20th century literature, as well as creating a new kind of Neo-Romanticist novels. Together with "Hunger (from 1890), "Pan" pioneered modern psychological literature and the techniques now known as "stream of consciousness" and "interior monologue".Few other authors of the period have had the kind of impact that Hamsun had. Ernest Hemingway attempted to write in the style of Hamsun, as did Henry Miller who considered him his teacher. Thomas Mann loved him and considered him the most important author of the period, and Hermann Hesse referred to him as his favourite author. The Russian authors of the period, e.g. Bosris Pasternak, were profoundly influenced by his books, and Andre Gide considered him superior to Dostojevski. Everyone read him, and everyone was influenced by him, Kafka, Brecht, Gorky, Wells...According to his American bibliographer Robert Ferguson (in 1987), Hamsun is "one of the most influential and innovative literary stylists of the past hundred years". Isaac Bashevis Singer called Hamsun "the father of the modern school of literature in his every aspect-his subjectiveness, his fragmentariness, his use of flashbacks, his lyricism. The whole modern school of fiction in the twentieth century stems from Hamsun", and Hemingway stated that "Hamsun taught me to write". Enstein said about him "I consider him to be one of the greatest men of our period", and Henry Miller said that it was reading Hamsun that prevented him from committing suicide. Maxin Girkij wrote to him in a letter "- I tell you this quite sincerely, at this moment you are the greatest artist in Europe; there is no one who can compare with you.", and Thomas Mann considered himself a disciple of Hamsun.Hamsun was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. By critics, Hamsun specialist, and Hamsun lovers, "Pan" is generally considered his greatest achievement, although "Hunger" is better known by laymen.

First appearance of Tschirnhaus's two papers in which he used infinitisimal methods which were very close to Leibniz's method and where he tried to lay down criteria for rational quadratures in the case of conic, cubic and quadratic curves, papers that led Leibniz to publish his first paper on the differential calculus, the "Nova Methoda" in the Acta for 1684 in order to secure his priority over Tschirnhaus concerning the calculus. Leibniz discovered, when he read Tschirnhaus' papers, that Tschirnhaus had here published results showing similarity with Leibniz's invention of the calculus as he had confided to Tschirnhaus earlier, during their Parisian stay, and this without references to Leibniz. The second issue contains an original paper by LEIBNIZ: "Meditatio Juridico-Mathematica de Interusurio simplice". A few light pencil annotations to a few leaves in the beginning, otherwise internally very nice, clan, and fresh. Old owner's name and a marginal stain to half-title. XVII, (1), 486, (2) pp. The first edition of Gadamer's main work, "Truth and Method", the aim of which is to uncover the nature of human understanding. A main work of philosophical hermeneutics as well as 20th century continental philosophy in general.Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900 - 2002) is the decisive figure in the development of twentieth century hermeneutics. He is without doubt one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century, and he has had an enormous impact on philosophy, theology and aesthetics, acquiring the greatest respect and reputation in Germany and the rest of Europe, which has been far from restricted to academic circles. "Truth and Method" is intended to be a description of what we consciously or unconsciously always do, when we interpret things. "My real concern was and is philosophic: not what we do or what we ought to do, but what happens to us over and above our wanting and doing" ("Truth and Method", 2nd ed. London, 1989 p. xxviii). The work has been published twice in English and is considered inevitable in the study of hermeneutics.

WILLIAMSON, OLIVER.

Worcester MA, The Heffernan Press, 1976. Royal8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. In "The Bell Journal of Economics": Vol. 7, No. 1, Spring 1976. Entire volume offered. Very light wear to extremities otherwise a very fine and crisp copy (not ex-library). Pp. 73-104. [Entire volume: 353 pp.]. First printing of Williamson's seminal paper - one of the most influential in economics of regulation - in which he argued that in the presence of uncertainty about future demand or costconditions, the transactions costs of writing a complete contract, contingent on all future outcomes is prohibitively costly. The paper initiated together with Goldberg's paper published the same year the new field of "transactions-cost economics".The paper was a contributing factor in Williamson being awarded the Nobel prize in Economics in 2009 for his " work in economic governance."In the paper he states that: "A once-for-all auction for the provision of a natural monopoly service is, in practice, totally impractical. On the other hand, periodic re-tendering introduces its own problems. Most public utility industries require substantial sunk, long-lived investment - whether in distribution wires, rail lines, or telecommunications conduits. Where the life of this investment exceeds the life of the franchise, contractual arrangements must ensure continued investment and maintenance of the sunk asset. It may be difficult to verify the quality of the maintenance of the asset ex post. This is particularly the case where the quality dimension includes maintaining the human capital of the staff required to ensure the continued operation of the asset. In addition, the incumbent provider of the service is likely to have better quality information about the likely cost and demand characteristicsof the service, providing an informational advantage over potential rival bidders. To illustrate these ideas, Williamson used a case study based on the experience of tendering cable television franchises in Oakland, California. He concludes: That franchise bidding for cable television has superior properties to regulation is not transparent - Not only is simple franchise bidding - beset with numerous transactional difficulties, but the institutional infrastructure that predictably develops to check dysfunctional or monopoloid outcomes has many of the earmarks of regulation. Using modern language, Williamson highlights and emphasises the importance of transactions costs. Williamson introduced for the first time the notion that natural monopoly regulation can be viewed as a form of long-term contracting. That long-term contract incorporates mechanisms to allow for adjustment to changes in the environment: At the risk of over-simplification, regulation may be described contractually as a highlyincomplete form of long-term contracting in which (1) the regulatee is assured an overall fair rate of return, in exchange for which (2) adaptations to changing circumstances are successively introduced without the costly haggling that attends such changes when parties to the contract enjoy greater autonomy'."

MAXWELL, JAMES CLERK. - THE "MAXWELL-DISTRIBUTION"S FINAL FORM.

lyn41873
(London, Taylor and Francis, 1866). No wrappers, as extracted from"Proceedings of the Royal Society of London.", Vol. XV. May 16, 1866. Pp 167-171. First appearance of this seminal paper (in the abstract-version from "Proceedings"), representing the announcement of Maxwell's final "Theory of Gases" and introduces the "Maxwell Distribution" in its final form, a statistical means of describing aspects of the kinetic theory of gases, a theory, together with his electromagnetic theory, are considered to be some of the greatest advances in physics of all times. The paper offered, only 5 pages, is an abstract of a paper with the same title, which was printed in full in "Philosophical Transactions" in 1868. Everett considers this paper (1868) to be Maxwell's greatest single paper. The "abstract", which announces his discovery was printed the year before the larger paper. Maxwell's discoveries laid the foundations of special relativity and quantum mechanics. One of Maxwell's major investigations was on the kinetic theory of gases. Originating with Daniel Bernoulli, this theory was advanced by the successive labours of John Herapath, John James Waterston, James Joule, and particularly Rudolf Clausius, to such an extent as to put its general accuracy beyond a doubt; but it received enormous development from Maxwell, who in this field appeared as an experimenter (on the laws of gaseous friction) as well as a mathematician. In 1866, he formulated statistically, independently of Ludwig Boltzmann, the Maxwell-Boltzmann kinetic theory of gases. His formula, called the Maxwell distribution, gives the fraction of gas molecules moving at a specified velocity at any given temperature. In the kinetic theory, temperatures and heat involve only molecular movement. This approach generalized the previously established laws of thermodynamics and explained existing observations and experiments in a better way than had been achieved previously. Maxwell's work on thermodynamics led him to devise the Gedankenexperiment (thought experiment) that came to be known as Maxwell's demon.

Amsterdam, Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1664. 12mo (128 x 67 mm). In a nice 18th century full calf binding with gilt compartments to spine, gilt boarders to bords and all edges gilt. A few scratches to boards. Hinges with wear and a bit loose. A fine and clean copy. (40), 748 pp. + five folded plates. Second edition of Varenius’ important work, in which he endeavored to lay down the general principles of the subject on a wide scientific basis, according to the knowledge of his day. It not only was a systematic geography on a scale not previously attempted, but it also contained a scheme for special, now known as regional, geography. That major work was frequently revised, and the edition of 1672 had improvements by Sir Isaac Newton. “Bernard Varenius is considered the founder of modern geographical science. In his "Geographia generalis", he distinguishes the major parts of geography, sets out several fundamental principles as well as the method according to which only general geography could vivify and make explanatory particular descriptions. Finally, his ideas on climates and the oceans are remarkable in several respects” (Antoine Bonifacio in Histoire de la Science, Pléiade). The work is divided into three sections: 1: absolute geography, 2: relative geography and 3: comparative geography. The first investigates mathematical facts relating to the earth as a whole, its figure, dimensions, motions, their measurement, etc. The second part considers the earth as affected by the sun and stars, climates, seasons, the difference of apparent time at different places, variations in the length of the day, etc. The third part treats briefly the actual divisions of the surface of the earth, their relative positions, globe and map-construction, longitude, navigation, etc. Berghman:1472.
