La Haye, G. Vervloet, 1831. Bound uncut w. the orig. front wrapper in a very nice private hcalf w. raised bands and gilt ornamentations on back (Petersen & Petersen). First blank leaf partly pasted on to inside of front wrapper. Apart from a bit of soiling to front wrapper, an excellent copy. The rare Haag-edition, printed the same year as the first edition (Paris, 1831), which is "importante et rare" (Carteret I:403). "Marion de Lorme" is one of Hugo's early works and the first play to be accepted for production under Hugo's own name. The work portrays the French monarchy - a controversial topic at the time - and due to this portrayel being far from flattering, the work was censored and banned. Rare with the orig. wrapper and in uncut condition. On the verso of the first blank leaf is a contemporary handwritten inscription, stating that the previous owner (Ch. Deiters) met with Gustave Doré: "Ch. Deiters/ a. Utrecht en Hollande (pour 26 Stuver)/ ee XI Septbr 1833 (Hotel de Bellevue)/ vers les IX heures (au soir) - jaret/ a partir pour Bois et Duv (?); avec/ Gustave D." The book has a very impressive Danish provenance. It has been in the libraries of some of the most important Danish bookcollectors and bears the ex libri of K.F. Plesner, Einar Christiansen, Poul Linneballe and H.P. Rohde.

Stamp to title page otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 455-472. [Entire volume: VIII,903 pp.]. First appearance of this grounbreaking paper which was the first to explain the nature of the chemical bound using wave mechanics and thus explaining the forces active when atoms exchange electrons and create molecules."In June, Heitler and London published their famous paper on the hydrogen molecule in which they showed the existence of a new kind of saturable, nondynamic forces, the so-called "exchange forces" of attraction or repulsion between like particles, and developed a schematic theory of the homopolar valence which eventually BROUGHT THE WHOLE OF CHEMISTRY UNDER THE SOVEREIGNTY OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. These results not only lent weight to the concept of like particles, they also showed that like particles may be indistinguishable, that is, may lose their identity, a conclusion which follows from the uncertainty relations or, more precisely, from the impossibility of keeping track of the individual particles in case of interactions of like particles. First appearance (but also in "Annalen der Chemie") of these outstanding researches on the benzoyl radical. where the importence of "radicals" to organic chemistry is illustrated."Along with his collegue, Friedrich Wöhler..who had already synthetized urea, Liebig wrote a famous paper (1832, the paper offered) in which he showed, for the first time, that a complex organic group pf atoms - a "radicale" as it is now called - is capable of forming a long series of compounds, behaving throughout as though it were an element. THE DISCOVERY IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTENCE FOR OUR CONCEPTION OF THE CHEMICAL CHANGES IN THE LIVING BODY."(Singer in "The Story of Living Things" p. 374)."In their classic paper - which was actually written by Wöhler although Liebig is listed as coauthor - they summarized their achievements: "...we make the general assertion that as a result of our experiments, it is established that there is a body, composed of three elements, that remains stable in the presence of reagents and that can be regarded not only as the radical of benzoic acid, bur perhaps with slight variatioons, as the radical of a large number of similar compounds.....Incidentally, many of the compounds they first prepared and described (such as benzoyl chloride) were importent in the future development of organic chemistry."(DSB XIV, pp. 476-477). - Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1832 C

Halle, Niemeyer, 1922 (Vol.1 and vol. 2, I) - 1921 (Vol 2, II). Royal 8vo. Bound in three original uniform black half cloth bindings w. gilt titles to spines. Capitals a bit worn and inner front hinges a bit weak. Internally nice and clean. XXII, 257, (1); XI, (1), 508; XIII, (1), 244 pp. A mixed set made up of the third and second edition (Dritte + Zweite Auflage) of Husserl's main work, one of the most important philosophical works of the 20th century. The "Logical Investigations" fundamentally changed philosophy and invoked the new philosophical era of the 20th century, -with this work Husserl founds phenomenology. Together with Heidegger's "Sein und Zeit" this must be considered the most important work of modern philosophy. The work was originally published 1900-1901, and the first edition is very difficult to come by. The second edition, is enlarged and revised, and the third collates exactly as the second. None of those two are common either.Husserl opens this fundamental work by attacking psychologism, and he then introduces his brand new philosophical method, which he had still by then not fully developed, but which came to influence all philosophy ever since -Phenomenology! Husserl himself calls this a "Work of Breakthrough" (see his preface to the second edition). In short, psychologism taught that logic itself was not an independent discipline, but a part of psychology, and it is this notion that Husserl gives its final blow in his logical investigations, -far more definitely than Frege had tried to some years earlier. Husserl now establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. The work is the starting point for mereology, the formal first order theory of wholes and their parts. Mereology is both an application of predicate logic and a branch of formal ontology.Husserl is now famous as the father of phenomenology, and he decisively influenced the likes of Heidegger, Sartre, Carnap, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Ricoeur, Derrida etc. etc.

Head of spine with small loss of leather, showing headbands. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Previous owner's name in contemporary hand to front free end-paper: "Charles Rudolf / 1685". Internally nice and clean. (24), 274, 288 pp. The rare first edition of Chorier's biography of Charles de Créquy (1578–1638), a famous French soldier and diplomat, who had a rather adventurous and gripping life: "Charles I. de Blanchefort, marquis de Créquy, prince de Poix, duc de Lesdiguières (1578–1638), marshal of France, son of the last-named, saw his first fighting before Laon in 1594, and was wounded at the capture of Saint Jean d’Angély in 1621. In the next year he became a marshal of France. He served through the Piedmontese campaign in aid of Savoy in 1624 as second in command to the constable, François de Bonne, duc de Lesdiguières, whose daughter Madeleine he had married in 1595. He inherited in 1626 the estates and title of his father-in-law, who had induced him, after the death of his first wife, to marry her half-sister Françoise. He was also lieutenant-general of Dauphiné. In 1633 he was ambassador to Rome, and in 1636 to Venice. He fought in the Italian campaigns of 1630, 1635, 1636 and 1637, when he helped to defeat the Spaniards at Monte Baldo. He was killed on the 17th of March 1638 in an attempt to raise the siege of Crema, a fortress in the Milanese. He had a quarrel extending over years with Philip, the bastard of Savoy, which ended in a duel fatal to Philip in 1599; and in 1620 he defended Saint-Aignan, who was his prisoner of war, against a prosecution threatened by Louis XIII. Some of his letters are preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, and his life was written by N. Chorier [the present work]". (Encyclopedia Britannica). Barbier II, 712.

London, Macmillian, 1962. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 196, October - December. Stamp to pasted down front end-paper and title-page. A fine copy. Pp. 1080-1. [Entire colume: LII, 1346 pp.]. First appearance of Shapiro's famous paper in which he sought to describe a bathtub vortex with the Coriolis Effect. This eventually gave birth to the urban myth that a toilet vortex always will have a counter clockwise flow in the Northern Hemisphere. The Coriolis effect on a micro level is still disputed and has never been satisfyingly confirmed or rejected. Scientists were aware that Earth's rotation alters the trajectory of objects in motion. This phenomenon causes low-pressure weather systems to twist counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. The Coriolis effect, as it's known, had long been well documented as the cause of hurricanes and tornadoes. But despite previous attempts, no one had shown that the effect-first described in 1835 by the French engineer and mathematician Gustave-Gaspard Coriolis-works on very small scales as well. Though in theory it should influence bathwater's exit through a drain, the Coriolis effect was thought to be too small to see."For his experiment, Shapiro used a circular, flat-bottomed tub with a centered drain hole three-eighths of an inch in diameter to which he attached a 20-foot length of hose, plugged with a stopper at the end. He filled the tank six inches deep with clean, room-temperature water. Small variations-air movement, a temperature change, a surface disturbance-create buoyancy currents that overshadow the Coriolis effect. So Shapiro did much tinkering to cancel out these possible sources of interference-covering the tank with a sheet of plastic to keep out air currents, for example, and carefully controlling the room's temperature. He also filled the tank by swirling water in clockwise, so that if the water drained counterclockwise, the direction would not have been influenced by how the tank was filled. After 24 hours of letting the water settle, Shapiro carefully pulled the plug from the end of the hose, gently placing above the drain a small float made of two crossed slivers of wood an inch long. It took about 20 minutes for the tub to drain completely. For the first 12 to 15 minutes, the float remained motionless. Then it began to rotate almost imperceptibly, counterclockwise, reaching a peak speed of approximately one revolution every three to four seconds. Proving that the Coriolis effect can be detected in a bathtub-size tank, albeit under carefully controlled conditions, was a remarkable achievement. At MIT's latitude of 42°, the effect was "only thirty-millionths that of gravity, which is so small that it will be overcome by filling and even temperature differences and water impurities," reported one of many newspapers and periodicals covering the experiment. Shapiro's results were published in Nature and verified by colleagues who used his technique to demonstrate a clockwise flow in the Southern Hemisphere. The findings fascinated a curious public of all ages. Shapiro would also become known for explaining and improving the aerodynamics of golf ball dimples, as well as for helping to develop the intra-aortic balloon for heart patients and devices to treat blood clots, asthma, emphysema, and glaucoma. But for more than a decade after the bathtub test, he would receive letters and newspaper clippings from all over the world about what was dubbed the "bathtub vortex" controversy. " (MIT Technology Review).

Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1694. Uncut in contemp. blank boards. Title handwritten on spine. Spine a little rubbed. (22),307 pp. and (8),159 pp. Textillustrations in woodcut illustrating Cartesian physics and world system. A large copy, few marginal brownspots. Previous owners name on fly-leaf, Vilhelm Maar, Danish historian of medicine. First Latin edition (The French original from 1690 Voyage du Monde de Descartes) of this imaginary travel to find Descartes on the moon and in the upper spheres. The work is one of the most importent anti-Cartesian polemics of the 1690's and it attacs the whole of Descartes system in a satirical way."It aimes principally at the sharp Cartesian distinction between body and soul, related in a satirical fashion the voyage of the disembodied souls of the narrator, of Mersanne, and of another old friend of Descartes in the upper spheres. On their way to visit Descartes in the third heaven, they meet the souls of Aristotle and the disciples of descartes (clearly refelcting here the philosophical opinions of Gabriel Daniel himself). One of the articles of that treaty stipulates that the Cartesians will refer to Aristotle with more respect, whereas the Aristotelians will refrain from calling Descartes "Enthusiast", "Madman", "Heretick" or "Atheist" - all of these evidently labels commonly used by the opponents of Descartes at that time." (Michael Heyd in "Be Sober and Reasonable"). The work was published anonymous and earlier sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe. -

Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. Textleaf frayed ininner margin. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.
