Berlin, Springer, 1933. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 85, 1933. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper and titlepage, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 4-16. [Entire volume: VIII, 811 pp.]. First printing of Stern and Frisch's seminal paper with the very first measurement of the proton magnetic moment constituting the earliest experimental evidence for the internal structure of the nucleon. "It is this work that was specifically mentioned in Stern's Nobel Prize citation" (DSB) in 1943 when he was awarded the prize "for his contribution to the development of the molecular ray method and his discovery of the magnetic moment of the proton"."Dirac had promulgated a theory according to which the ratio of the magnetic moment of the proton to that of the electron should have been the same as the inverse ratio of their masses. This theory was believed so generally that when Stern, O. R. Frisch, and this writer began the very difficult experiments, they were told more than once by eminent theoreticians that they were wasting their time and effort. But Stern's perseverance paid off. Measurements showed a proton magnetic moment two or three times larger than expected. While that result has since been reproduced with greater accuracy, a really satisfactory theoretical explanation is still outstanding. It is this work that was specifically mentioned in Stern's Nobel Prize citation." (DSB)The magnetic moment of the proton, first measured in 1933 by Frisch and Stern, was the earliest experimental evidence for the internal structure of the nucleon. Although the theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), is over 20 years old, a quantitative description of the magnetic moments of the nucleons based on QCD remains an elusive goal. The phenomenal quantitative success of the standard electroweak theory now allows one to use the weak interaction to obtain additional information on the magnetic properties of the nucleon. In particular, the measurement of the strength of the magnetic interaction with the neutral weak boson Z0(when combined with the usual magnetic interaction with the photon) enables a decomposition of the nucleon magnetism into the contributions arising from the three relevant quark flavors (up, down, and strange). (American Physical Society)The present volume also contain Estermann and Stern paper: "Über sie magnetische Ablenkung von Wasserstoffmolekülen und das magnetische Moment des Protons" in which they demonstrated the existence of de Broglie Waves for Atom and molecules.

STEROSCOPE CARDS -

lyn59848
Washington, Underwood & Underwood, 1900 - 1901. 72 stereoscope card (177 x 90 mm) housed in the original book-like slipcase. Slipcase with wear. Cards fine and clean. Fine collection of 72 stereoscope cards depicting primarily war scenes from the South African War (Anglo-Boer war). Most of the images deal with the action on the north-eastern frontier of the Cape between November 1899 and February 1900 including scenes from Hanover, Naauwpoort, Dordrecht or Arundel and Rensburg (South of Colesburg). U & U photographers were also present on the march to Kimberley, at the surrender of General Cronje at Paardeberg, at the occupation of Bloemfontein, on the march through the Free State towards Johannesburg and the triumphant entry into Pretoria. Images of the Natal campaign (siege of Ladysmith), battlegrounds of Colenso and Spioenkop are also included. “War correspondents and news photographers descended upon South Africa at the start of the Anglo-Boer war, among them the photographers of Underwood & Underwood. These photographers were not news photographers after sensational, gory war images, nor were they part of any pro-British or anti-Boer propaganda campaign. They stayed away from conflict zones but still captured other military related activity with their primary market, namely the American middle class in mind. Underwood and Underwood produced sets of images in boxes made to look like a single, or a pair of books entitled: “The South African War through the Stereoscope”. These boxes were then filled with Anglo-Boer war stereo photographs pasted onto curved cardboard. More titles were added as the war progressed. Later described as the leaders in armchair travel photography, Underwood & Underwood was founded by two brothers in 1881 in Ottawa, Kansas. The brothers were Elmer Underwood (born Fulton County, Illinois 1859 - died St. Petersburg, Florida during 1947) and Bert Elias Underwood (born in Oxford, Illinois 1862 - died Tucson, Arizona during 1943). The company moved its main office from Ottawa, Kansas to New York City 10 years later. During the late 19th and early 20th century, Underwood and Underwood (To be referred to as U & U from this point onwards) responded to the increasing demand of their primary market, namely the middle-class American’s visual curiosity on the expanding world. The Underwoods hired their own photographers, some of whom were Americans. Unfortunately, none of their names have been recorded on the Anglo-Boer war stereo cards or on the photographs themselves. It is thought that some photographs may also have been bought from South African based photographers by U & U. This would however have been an absolute exception and not the rule. The Anglo-Boer war images sold door to door in America would have formed but a small fraction of the wide variety of images and themes on offer by U & U.” (Carol Hardijzer, Anglo-Boer War - Stereo Photographs produced by Underwood & Underwood).

THOMSON, THOMAS & WILLIAM HYDE WOLLASTON. - THE LAW OF MULTIPLE PROPORTIONS CONFIRMED - THE FOUNDATIONS OF ATOMIC THEORY.

(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1808). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1808 - Part I. Pp. 63-95 (Thomson) and pp. 96-102 (Wollaston:). Clean and fine. First appearance of these two historical papers in chemistry in which Thomson and Wollaston, independently, presents experimental proofs of John Dalton's "Law of Multiple Proportions", and thereby laying the foundations of the Atomic Theory. - These demonstrations went far to influence chemists favorably toward Dalton's atomic theory. "In January 1808 Thomson was the first to submit an experimental illustration of the law of multiple proportions, doing so at least four months before the publication of Dalton's "New System of Chemistry Philosophy" (1808). This paper, "On Oxalic Acid" also established a usefull method of determining empirical formulas."(DSB XIII, p. 373)."This paper is also importent as he here introduces quantified chemical symbolism for compounds, a compound with, for instance, two parts oxygen (w) and one part carbon (c) being denoted by 2w + c." (Parkinson in "Breakthroughs", 1808 C)."In 1808 he (Wollaston) described his experiments on carbonates, sulfates, and oxalates, which proved that the composition of these substances was regulated by the law of multiple proportions. These additional instances of the law were easely verifiable and were often mentioned as standard examples. Wollaston accepted that his findings were merely particular instances of Dalton's assertion that the atoms of elements united one to one, or by simple multiple relation."(DSB XIV, p.488).

Franckfurt am Mayn, Thomas Fritsch, 1700. Folio. Bound in one contemp. full calf. Spine worn. lacks leather at upper compartment and wear to lower compartment. Corners bumped and worn. (20),411:695,(36) pp. Woodcut on titlepage. A few scattered brownspots. A faint dampstain to lower margins on a few leaves. Oth3rwise internally fine. Scarce second edition of Arnold's influential "Impartial History of the Church and of Heresy"."In this major revision of church history, Arnold directed his sharpest criticism against those who wrote deeply biased apologetic "orthodox" histories instead of trying to understand where substantial religious differences actually came from. In his view,"heresy making" was usually the defensive reaction of those in authority, rather than a true indictment of unconventional thinkers. He thought that the worst calamity in Church history was its establishment as the accepted and orthodox faith by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the fourth century. Arnold evinced a remarkable sympathy for a huge variety of "heretics." This "impartial history" exercised a wide influence on the German Enlightenment and won approval from such thinkers as Johann Wolfgang Goethe in addition to Leo Tolstoy."

Leipzig, B.G. Teubner, 1884. 8vo. Bound in a nice contemporary half calf with five raised gilt bands. Red leather title label with gilt lettering to spine. All edged gilt. In "Mathematische Annalen", Band 23, 1884. Entire volume offered. Corners with wear, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Pp. 453-488. [Entire volume: IV, 598, (2) pp.]. First printing of Cantor's seminal sixth paper in the landmark series consisting of a total of six papers which together constitute the foundation Theory of Sets (Mengenlehre) and Transfinite Set Theory. Cantor here introduces his new Set Theory with which he created an entirely new field of mathematical research and is widely regarded as being one of the most important mathematical conquests in the 19th century. "Cantor published a sequel in the following year as a sixth in the series of papers on the Punktmannigfaltigkeitslehre (The present paper). Though it did not bear the title of its predecessor, its sections were continuously numbered, 15 through 19; it was clearly meant to be taken as a continuation of the earlier 14 sections of the "Grundlagen" itself. In searching for a still more comprehensive analysis of continuity, and in the hope of establishing his continuum hypothesis, he focused chiefly upon the properties of perfect sets and introduced as well an accompanying theory of content" (Dauben, P. 111)Hilbert spread Cantor's ideas in Germany and praised Cantor's transfinite arithmetic as "the most astonishing product of mathematical thought, one of the most beautiful realizations of human activity in the domain of the purely intelligible". He is famously quoted for saying "No one shall expel us from the paradise which Cantor created for us". Bertrand Russel described Cantor's work as "probably the greatest of which the age can boast"."The major achievement of the "Grundlagen" was its presentation of the transfinite ordinal numbers as a direct extension of the real numbers. Cantor admitted that his new ideas might seem strange, even controversial, but he had reached a point in his study of the continuum where the new numbers were indispensable for further progress. Cantor had finally come to the realization that his 'infinite symbols' were not just indices for derived sets of the second species, but could be regarded as actual transfinite numbers that were just as real mathematically as the finite natural numbers." Oxford, Basil Blackwell, 1950. 8vo. Orig. full green cloth w. gilt lettering to spine, orig. blue dust-jacket w. some soiling. Very minor nick to upper capital at back hinge, otherwise intact w. no loss and not price-clipped. Cloth-bdg. w. minor wear to capitals. Internally very nice and clean. Pp. xii + xiie, pp. XI + XIe, (2), 119 + 119e pp. First U.K. edition, being the first English language, edition of this philosophical classic, Frege's later so influential first book, which is considered the best introduction to his thought. The work was originally published in German in 1894 (the text of which is also printed here), but the English translation has probably been more influential. Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege (1848 - 1925) was a German mathematician, but his main contributions lie in his becoming a logician and a philosopher, who influenced the fields of logic and analytic philosophy immensely. Together with Wittgenstein, Russel and Moore, Frege is considered the founder of analytic philosophy, and a main founder of modern mathematical logic. In the preface of the "Principia Mathematica" Russell and Whitehead state that "In all questions of logical analysis our chief debt is to Frege" (p. VIII). His influence on 20th century philosophy has been deeply profound, especially in the English speaking countries from the middle of the 20th century and onwards; in this period most of his works were translated into English for the first time. The philosophical papers of Frege were published in Germany in scholarly journals, which were barely read outside of German speaking countries. The first collections of his writings did not appear until after the Second World War, and Frege was little known as a philosopher during his lifetime. He greatly influenced the likes of Russel, wittgenstein and Carnap, though, and bears a great responsibility for the turn modern philosophical thought has taken. Due to his contributions to the philosophy of language, analytic philosophy could be founded as it were. Instead of answering the question about meaning, Frege here sets out to explore the foundations of arithmetic, beginning with questions such as "What is a number?" In his solutions the answer to the question of meaning could also be found, though, and he permitted himself "the hope that even the philosophers, if they examine what I have written without prejudice, will find in it something of use to them." (p. XIi - Introduction). The book has belonged to James K. Feibleman, the author of "A Myth is a Religion in which no one any longer believes" in "Understanding Philosophy", 1973, and bears a dedication from him "For Florence".German-English parallel-text.

FIZEAU, ARMAND HIPPOLYTE - ANNOUNCING FIZEAU EXPERIMENT ON THE VELOCITY OF LIGHT IN MEDIA.

Paris, Bachelier, 1851. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 33, No 13. With htitle and titlepage to tome 33. Pp. (329-) 360 (entire issue offered). Fizeau's paper: pp. 349-355. A stamp on upper right corner of title-page and a perforated stamp in lower margin of title-page. Clean and fine. First appearance of this paper, the first announcment of Fizeau's results of his experiments with the velocity of light."It (the paper) is less famous, for some reason, than the failure of Michelson and Morley to detect the aether drag, but NO LESS SIGNIFICANT. For it showed that the velocity of light increases in a medium according to the formula, v (1 - 1/n2), where v is the velocity of the medium, and n is the refractive index"(Gillespie in "The Edge of Objecticity" p. 427). Fizeau shows that the velocity of light is higher in water flowing in the direction of the beam than that of light propagating in the direction opposite the direction of flow. The paper offered is the shorter announcement of the research, the paper in full was published later in 1859 in "Annales de Chimie et de Physique". Albert Einstein later pointed out the IMPORTENCE OF THE EXPERIMENT FOR SPECIAL RELATIVITY.Fizeau's result was replicated by Albert Michelson and Edward Morley in 1886 repeated the experiment on a larger scale and confirmed Fizeau's results., and in 1914 it was confirmed by Pieter Zeeman. It was Arago in 1838, who suggested this "crucial experiment" to decide between the corpuscular and undulatory theories of light by comparing the speed of light in water and in air.. It vindicated the undulatory position. It was shown by Hendrik Lorentz (1892, 1895) that the experiment can be explained by the reaction of the moving water upon the interfering waves without the need of any aether entrainment. On this occasion, Lorentz introduced a different time coordinate for moving bodies within the aether, the so called Local time (an early form of the Lorentz transformation for small velocities compared to the speed of light). In 1895, Lorentz went a step further and explained the coefficient by local time alone and without mentioning any interaction of light and matter.
