Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1689. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Boards with stains. Edges of bookblock with stains which has also miscoloured upper and outer margins of leaves. (6), 168, 183-254, 241-351, 360-369, (7) p., + 6 folded plates. Second edition of Tachard’s account of the second embassy to Siam in which the commercial treaty from 1685 (the first Embassy) was reaffirmed. Despite its primary goal of reinforcing the 1685 commercial treaty, the mission was not a success. The embassy consisted of five warships The arrival of French troops in Bangkok and Mergui incited intense nationalist movements in Siam which eventually resuted in a bloody revolution: “Exactly six months later, on 1 March, the three mandarins and their suite sailed back to Siam, taking with them Louis XIV's second French embassy to Phra Narai, headed this time by Simon de La Loubere and Claude Ceberet de Boullay.211 Ostensibly, its mission was to strengthen the diplomatic and commercial ties already established between the two kingdoms by concluding a firm alliance. But the real goal probably was to establish a protectorate over Siam, using the 636 soldiers sent out with the new envoys as an initial holding force-hardly the small bodyguard requested originally by the Asian monarch. But this embassy, too, failed to achieve its objectives. A fresh trade treaty was negotiated, to be sure, though under very trying conditions; meanwhile, the steady growth of strong xenophobic sentiment at the Siamese court over the foreign military occupation of Bangkok and the port of Mergui on the Bay of Bengal did not bode well for the future. In fact, just six months after the ambassadors had left for France in January 1688, Siam exploded in a bloody revolution that toppled Phra Narai's dynasty from the throne, overthrew the French garrison and closed the kingdom to Europeans except for a single Dutch trading post.213 By the time news of the disaster had reached Europe, Louis XIV was engaged heavily in a new war with his continental enemies and was in no position to respond. French contact with Siam thus ended abruptly for the next 150 years.” (Love, The Making of an Oriental Despot: Louis XIV and the Siamese Embassy of 1686). Guy Tachard (1651 – 1712), also known as Père Tachard, was a French Jesuit missionary and mathematician who participated in both the first and second Embassy to Siam. A 4to-edition was published the same year. Graesse VII, 7 Nissen 4067

Copenhagen, 1737. Folio (405 x 260 mm). In contemporary full black calf with four raised bands and double ruled fillets to boards. Wear to extremities, leather cracked. Repair to head of spine. Foot of spine chipped. Previous owner's name to front free end-paper (Kammer Juncker Rosenörn). Internally fine and clean. (4), 446, (24) pp. + large folded frontispiece. Uncommon funeral sermon for Birgitte Scheel (1669-1737) During the 17th century, the aristocracy commissioned publications dedicated to commemorating their departed spouses and celebrating their virtuous lives. These publications likely served both as a means to instill moral conduct in society, conduct profitable transactions and last but not least fuel the circles of gossip. Funeral sermons emerged as romanticized portrayals of the nobility and the upper classes of society. Between the late 16th century and the mid-18th century, funeral sermons became a sought-after commodity in the Danish book market. Primarily intended for the deceased's family, these sermons allowed them to reflect on their own lineage. Provenance: Valdemar's Castle.

A fine and clean set. (three Frontispieces), 445, (1) pp.; 456 pp.; 488 pp. The rare first Norwegian translation of Darwin's "The life and letters of Charles Darwin, including an autobiographical chapter" - being the first translation of any of Darwin's works into Norwegian ("Origin" was translated into Norwegian in 1890).A complete Danish translation of the work has never been published and the first Swedish translation did not appear until 1959. Due to the similarities between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, this edition in effect introduced Darwin's letters and autobiography to Scandinavia.Martin Simon Søraas is listed as translator on all three title-pages whereas Freeman lists Peder Jacobsen Ulleland as having translated vol. 1. and Martin Simon Søraas as having translated vol. 2 and 3. Copenhagen, Institute for Theoretical Physics, 1952. 4to. In the original grey stapled printed wrappers. Stenciled. "52.15" wirtten in top right corner of front wrapper. Very fine and clean. 65 pp. Rare stenciled report on the major international physics conference held in Copenhagen, 1952, sponsored by the Council of Representatives of European States "for planning an international laboratory and organizing other forms of co-operation in nuclear research" (From the introduction in the present report by Niels Bohr). This laid much of the technical foundation for the CERN-acceleration built two years later. "[…] an international nuclear physics conference was held in Copenhagen; on that occasion the type of accelerator to be built as the main goal of the new European organization was amply discussed. A report on the conclusions reached by the participants was presented by Heisenberg to the Council which held its Second Meeting in Copenhagen immediately after the Conference. Thus the decision was taken that the Proton-Synchrotron Group should explore the possibility of constructing a 10 GeV proton-synchrotron which, at that time, represented the biggest machine in the world." WIEN, WILLY. [WILHELM]. - A FUNDAMENTAL PAPER OF MODERN PHYSICS.

lyn43069
Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1896. 8vo. Contemporary half cloth with gilt title to spine. Band 58 of "Annalen der Physik und Chemie". Library stamp to verso of title-page. Light wear to edges and capitals and a damp-stain to the lower part of the last three leaves. Otherwise a clean and well preserved copy. The entire volume offered. Pp. 662-669. [Entire volume: VIII, 776 pp. + 6 folded plates]. First edition of Wilhelm Wien's highly influential paper on the phenomenon of radiation, also known as Wien's displacement law. Wien followed Ludwig Boltzmann's approach when incorporating electrodynamics and thermodynamics in investigating radiation and its characteristics. "He argued that if a system reaches the same temperature by the increase of temperature or by the adiabatic compression of the volume containing heat radiation, it should yield the same energy distribution. Considering also the Doppler effect of the radiation, Wien arrived at an expression for energy distribution that states that the product of temperature and the wave length is a constant". (Mathew Chandrankunnel, Philosophy of physics, 2000, 4 p).Wien's empirical observations functioned as a starting point for Max Planck who wanted prove the theoretical foundation for Wien's, wishing thus to justify the entropy law. Today Wien's approximation is also known as Wien-Planck law. This phenomenon was coined "Wien's displacement law" because the energy density curve is displaced correspondingly to the temperature; it implies that the hotter an object is, the shorter the wavelength at which it will release most of its radiation. Wien's description of radiation awarded him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1911. Wien's constant is today used in a wide range of different aspects of physics, e.g. cosmic microwave background, and the determination of how much energy is emitted from a light bulb. Magie, "A Source Book in Physics". Pp. 597-600.Other papers of interest contained in the present volume:KOHLRAUSCH, F. Bornemann in both volumes. Wear to spines and scratches to boards. Internally very nice and clean, printed on good paper. (2), 182 pp.; 134 pp. Presentation copy of the rare first edition of P. G. Bang’s seminal work, Udvikling af Læren om Interessentskab og de samme nærmest vedkommende Retsforhold – the very first Danish treatment of the subject, and a milestone in Scandinavian legal history. This pioneering study is regarded as the first jurisprudential exposition of corporate law in Denmark anticipating later systematic treatments of partnership and company legislation. His work established a legal-theoretical foundation for the understanding of partnership agreements, shareholders’ relations and the broader legal framework governing commercial associations. The copy was given by Bang to F.C. Bornemann, a Danish legal professor at the University of Copenhagen from 1840 to 1861, primarily known for applying philosophical methods to legal science. He was influenced by contemporary German philosophers, notably Hegel, in his work on legal philosophy. Peter Georg Bang (1797 – 1861) was a Danish politician and jurist. Torino, Unione Tipografico-Editrice, 1888. 8vo. In comtenporary half vellum with embossed title to spine. First quire partly detached. Occassional light brownspotting throughout. (2), 210, (4) pp. + 3 floded plates and 1 frontiespiece. This First Italian translation of "The structure and distribution of coral reefs", being the first part of the three-part work "Geology of the Voyage of the Beagle" (Freeman 271). Only the present first part was transted into Italian.Compared to France and Spain Darwinism was quickly adopted by Italian biologist and zoologist and meet only little catholic opposition. "The impact of Darwinism on Italian naturalists was powerful; the logic and rigorous treatment of the problem of the origin of species as Darwin had presented it, forced zoologists and anthropologists to reconsider those passages of Lamarckisms that they had agreed to with excessive enthusiasm". (Capanna, Darwinism and the Italian academies). The reception of Darwin's worsk in France and Spain were characterized by a strong chatolic opposition, which also had a strong suppressing effect on the spread of his ideas to academic institutions.Despite of Italy being a catholic stronghold the reception of Darwinism was very favourable and meet very limited criticism from the church:"In contrast to the power Catholicism was able to exert against Darwinism in Spain, it was practically impotent in Italy. Neither could the Italian Catholic intellectual establishment draw upon a repertory of anti-Darwinism arguments from the Italian scientific establishment, as was done in France. As in France under the Third Republic and as was the case sporadically in Spain, the advent of Darwinism in Italy provided a source of ideology for the anticlerical movement. Although Darwinism enjoyed a number of close connections with the English source, the peculiarities of the Italian situation set Darwinism in Italy apart from other situations. Italy was in the forefront in recognizing Darwin, electing him to various academies and societies and awarding him the famous Bressa Prize in 1875."The three parts of Darwin's geological results of the Beagle voyage were separately published over a period of five years, but they were intended, and described on the title pages, as parts of one work. They were all published by Smith Elder, with the approval of the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, some of the £1,000 given for the publication of the results of the voyage going towards the cost of at least the first part. Darwin notes, in May 1842, that the cost of Coral reefs was £130-140 and that 'the government money has gone much quicker than I thought'. By that date there were only two parts of the Zoology of the Beagle still to come out. Smith Elder also published the important later editions." (Freeman)Freeman 318.

Den specielle titel kan med en vis rimelighed siges at hentyde til en villet videreførelse af den beundrede og på tidspunktet for udgivelsen netop afdøde Poul Martin Møllers nærmest upublicerede produktion.
