Plesner bemærker, at intet eksemplar af denne roman findes i offentlige danske samlinger. Dette eksemplar har tilhørt Plesner.

In 1757 he began teaching geography, making him one of the earliest academics to establish it as an independent discipline.Geography became one of Kant’s most popular lecture topics, and in 1802, Friedrich Theodor Rink compiled and published the present work based on Kant's lecture notes. After becoming a professor in 1770, Kant broadened his lecture topics to include natural law, ethics, anthropology and other fields. Warda 210.

Tucuman, Argentina, 1941. Royal8vo. Orig. printed wrappers. Offprint from "Revista. Universidad Nacional de Tucuman", Series A Matematicas y Fisica Teorica, Vol. 2, Diciembre de 1941, Nos 1 y 2. Pp. 11-15. Fine and clean. This copy has belonged to Abraham Pais (1918-2000) - the famous Einstein scholar, theoretical physicist and Einsteins collegue at Princeton - and having his name on top of the frontwrapper "A Pais" First edition of a scarce paper in the offprint version. The paper "represents the basis of the one written by the same author in collaboration with Wolfgang Pauli in 1943, in which, by following analogous lines, the proof of the non-existence of regular particle-type solutions was generalized to the case of cilyndrical geometries in Kaluza-Klein theory (Einstein & Pauli, 1943). Besides, other generalizations were subsequently presented. The (non)-existence of such solutions in classical unified field theory was undoubtedly an important criterion leading Einstein's investigations."(Galvagno and Giribet)."In his search for a unified field theory that could undercut quantum mechanics, Einstein considered five-dimensional classical Kaluza-Klein theory. He studied this theory most intensively during the years 1938-1943. One of his primary objectives was finding a non-singular particle solution. In the full theory this search got frustrated, and in the x5-independent theory Einstein, together with Pauli, argued it would be impossible to find these structures." The first synthetic preparation of an organic compound from inorganic materials. Wöhler's most important contribution to chemistry is his synthesis of urea by heating ammonium cyanate. This discovery destroyed the vitalistic theory which held that organic compounds could be produced only by living organisms, and led eventually to the brilliant results that have been achieved in attempts to synthesize other organic compounds. The work is generally regarded as being the beginning of organic chemistry. Dibner: Heralds of Science, no. 45. Sparrow: Milestones of Science, no. 197 Garrison & Morton, no. 671.

TRUBETZKOY, N.S. (TRUBETSKOY, TRUBETSKOI)
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn38104
Prague, 1939. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Minor wear and loss to extremities, but a very nice, clean and uncut copy. 345, (3) pp. First edition of two very important articles by the founder of morphophonology, the seminal linguist Prince Nikolai Sergeyevich Trubetzkoy. The first article is a cornerstone of interlinguistics and the study of the possible construction of an artificial international language.Trubetzkoy (1890-1938) died at a young age and published very little in his life-time, and so also his main work was published posthumously. The present article "Wie soll das Lautsystem einer künstlichen internationalen Hilfssprache beschaffen sein?" represents a classic work within interlinguistics and is considered one of the most important contributions to the solving of the problem of constructing a phonologically acceptable international language. The other article by him present here "Aus meiner phonologischen Karthotek" was the last thing he worked on before he died. Trubetzskoy is considered one of the most important linguists of the 20th century and his name within this field has been made immortal due to his contributions to phonology, especially focused on determining general and universal phonological laws. He was responsible for establishing phonology as a discipline in itself, separate from phonetics, and he is the founder morphophonology, the study of the phonological structure of morphemes. He was one of the main members of the Prague School of linguistics, and due to his premature death of a heart attack, probably caused by him being persecuted by the Nazis due to his anti-Nazi views, we are much indebted to his fellow linguist and friend Roman Jakobson for spreading Trubetzkoy's theories.Trubetzkoy corresponded with many of the great linguists of his time, e.g. Hjelmslev, the founder of the Copehagen School of linguistics, and many of these important philologers have contributed to this volume of articles, which are all written in the honour of Trubetzkoy.

Berlin, Springer, 1918. Lex 8vo. Bound with the original printed wrappers in a nice brown half cloth w. gilt title and year to spine. A few underlinings in pencil, otherwise a very nice and clean copy. With the ownership signature of Jørgen Jørgensen to front wrapper. IX, (1), 346, (4, -advertisements) pp. First edition of Schlick's main work, his "General Theory of Knowledge", a founding work of logical positivism. From the library of Jørgen Jørgensen, with his ownership signature to front wrapper. Jørgen Jørgensen (1894-1964) was a famous Danish philosopher and logician. He was a member of the Vienna Circle and an internationally known logical positivist. He corresponded with almost all famous logicians and analytic philosophers of the time and was a highly respected philosopher throughout the world. In the work Schlick argues against synthetic a priori knowledge, stating that the only truths that are self-evident to reason are statements that are true pr. definition, e.g. statements of formal logic and mathematics. All other statements must be deemed true with reference to empirical evidence. If a statement does not live up to one of the two criteria, Schlick defines it as "metaphysical" and thereby as meaningless, -a sentiment that became leading for the Vienna Circle and its members."Allgemeine Erkenntnislehre" (1918), his major work, examines a very wide range of problems and concepts relating to scientific knowledge. Schlick begins with the all-important concept of knowledge itself, the analysis of which sets the tone and determines the special character of the work as a whole. Despite the half century since its appearance, the work remains perhaps the most comprehensive and valuable treatment of the general theory of knowledge." (DSB XII:178).Schlick here distinguishes between two ways of knowing, which he calls "Erkenntnis" (i.e. recognition or knowledge) and "Kenntnis" (based on experience). With this distinction he both denies the impossibility of possessing knowledge of that which is beyond the directly perceived as well as the idea that reality is only connected to the immediately given, i.e. the things that we perceive directly.Schlick sees knowledge as the true description of the relationship of classes, connections, laws of relationships etc, and thus it is by no means restricted to what can be directly perceived, -rather, the perceived provides us with the opportunity to receive knowledge of the laws that govern it. Thus, the object of science is to test and formulate hypotheses, and only form or structure can enter the field of knowledge, -the immediately perceived is more a matter of feeling, not of thought. But still, according to Schlick, matters of feelings are by no means of lesser value than those of thought.Moritz Schlick (1882-1936) is the founding father of the Vienna Circle and logical positivism in general. In 1922 Schlick was appointed Professor of Philosophy in Vienna, and here he organized regular meetings with the aim of discussing philosophy and science - an event that changed the face of modern philosophy. Some of the participants of this little group were: Rudolf Carnap, Kurt Gödel, Hans Hahn, Herbert Feigl, Otto Neurath and Friedrich Waissmann. The called themselves the Ernst Mach association, but for posterity they are remembered as the Vienna Circle. It is around the same time that Wittgenstein publishes his Tractatus Logico-Philosohicus, and the work became a topic for the Vienna Circle at almost every meeting they held. Schlick succeeded in meeting with Wittgenstein and discuss his book, and it is due to Schlick's influence that Wittgenstein was convinced into writing his second main work, the "Philosophical Investigations.
