Haye, Chez J. Neaulme, 1741. Small 8vo. Cont. full mottled calf w. five raised bands on back, back richly gilt. Small holes and lack of leather to lower capital and back-hinge, due to insect-bites. Bdg. somewhat worn. Internally a bit of brownspotting and occationally a little soiling, but overall fine. Engr. frontispiece (= engr. t-p. dated 1707), 8 full-page engr. plates and 3 about half-page engr. vignettes. (6), XVIII, 394, (6) pp. This is the Dutch reprint (in French) (also called the "pirated edition") of the first edition from 1706/07, with the engraved title-page from this. The second edition appeared in 1747. "In 1741 Neaulme issued a pirated edition which again, apart from variations on the title-page, is identical to the 1706 edition. Encouraged by this pirated edition Frezier wrote a second edition which appeared in 1747 in three differing versions." (C. Philip, p. 59). Very important reference-work on firewirks. "Frezier was probably one of the most important pyrotechnics in the mid 18th century..." (C. Philip, p. 58). He borrows heavily from other authors, but his works are interesting, also as they scrupulously cite the sources. The plates show different kinds of fireworks, with many illustrations on each and the vignettes show displays of fireworks, as this work also deals much with the conduct and displaying of these.

Rotterdam, Reinier Leers, 1688. Small 8vo. Fine contemp. full mottled calf, richly gilt back. Titlelabel in leather. (6),604 pp. A very small inkspot in upper margin of the last 20 leaves. On good paper, clean and fine. First edition. Malebranche is one of the major philosophers of Cartesianism and his philosophy sought to synthesize Cartesianism with the thought of St. Augustin and with Neoplatonism. His "Entretiens..." (Dialogues on Metaphysics and Religion) as a series of 14 dialogues, is perhaps the best introduction to his philosophy in general."The French Cartesian Nicolas Malebranche was hailed by his contemporary, Pierre Bayle, as "the premier philosopher of our age." Over the course of his philosophical career, Malebranche published major works on metaphysics, theology, and ethics, as well as studies on optics, the laws of motion and the nature of color. He is known principally for offering a highly original synthesis of the views of his intellectual heroes, St. Augustine and René Descartes. Two distinctive reults of this synthesis are Malebranche's doctrine that we see bodies through ideas in God and his occasionalist conclusion that God is the only real cause." SICK, INGEBORG MARIA - EGENHÆNDIGT ROMANMANUSKRIPT.

The scarce first edition of the work in which Steenstrup describes his discovery of the principle of 'alternation of generations', sexual and asexual in plants and animals. "(Steenstrup) showed that certain animals produce offspring which never resemble them but which, on the other hand, bring forth progeny which return in form and nature to their grandparents or more distant ancestors." (Garrison & Morton No 217). A German translation was published the same year, and an English in 1845. Norman 2009 (German translation). "The second major publication - (the first dealing with geology) - of 1842 was "Om Forplantning og Udvikling gjennem vexlende Generationsrækker...", (the work offered), Steenstrup's comprehensive presentation of the form of reproduction that he called 'alternation of generations', that is, the alternation of asexual and sexual reproduction, or metagenesis. This phenomenon had previously been described by Chamisso, but Steenstrup included a greater number of observations, based on a significantly wider range of subjects, and provided an importent chapter on its meaning. Steenstrup's growing reputation, won him an appointment as professor of zoology at the University of Copenhagen, where he tought from 1846 until 1885."(DSB XII, p. 9).

X, 156 pp.; (4), 88 pp. 20, 16, 15, 18, (31) advertising First edition of Abakanowicz's famous integraph. It was invented independently about 1880 by the British physicist Sir Charles Vernon Boys and by Bruno Abakanowicz, however, the later being referred to as inventor (Goldstein, L'Europe mathématique: histoires, mythes, identities). "The developments in the integraph design made by Abdank-Abakanowicz in France in the 1870s have been acknowledged as amongst the most noteworthy" (Small, The Electronic Analogue Computer, P. 59)."The integraph is an elaboration and extension of the planimeter, an earlier, simpler instrument used to measure area. It is a mechanical instrument capable of deriving the integral curve corresponding to a given curve. Hence, it is able to solve elementary differential equations graphically. However, it was not until 1878 that he succeeded in developing a practical model. "This volume is a description of the basic Abakanowicz instrument and a few of its later modifications. Abdank-Abakanowicz's instrument was able to produce solutions for only simpler differential equations, i.e., the commonly entountered class having the form dy/dx = F(x). An instrumental solution requires that as a first step a graph of the function F be drawn. Next, a pointer on the instrument is used to follow (trace) this graph. The value of the integral may then be read from the instrumentdials. This Abakanowicz approach was widely adopted in the early twentieth century, and the instrument was produced, and later improved, by such well-known instrument makers as Coradi in Zurich" (The Erwin Tomash Library, Vol. 1, p. 2.).Bound with Abakanowicz's Integraph is:Répertoire Alphabétique des Procédés et Recettes publiés par Le Monde de la Science et de l'Industrie pendant les Années 1880 à 1886. London, Macmillan and Co., 1928. Royal8vo. In recent full blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Extracted from "Nature", January - June, 1928, Vol. 121. Entire April 14-issue offered. Fine and clean. [Bohr:] Pp. 580-90. [Entire issue:] Pp. 561-608. First edition of Bohr's exceedingly influential statement of his 'complementarity' principle, the basis of what became known as the 'Copenhagen interpretation' of quantum mechanics. In the paper he coined the term 'complementarity' and thereby created an entire new fundamental principle of quantum mechanics."Immediately after Heisenberg's work on uncertainty relations, Bohr presented his concept of complementarity at a conference a Lake Como in Italy. Bohr's lecture marked the first attempt to provide a genuine philosophical underpinning to the new advances in physics. The uncertainty relations had provided Bohr a concrete measure of the consequences of the wave-particle duality and thereby a physics-based justification for the ideas he was working on. Bohr had already embraced the wave-particle duality underlying quantum theory and he presented the concept of complementarity as the fundamental feature of a new conceptual framework broad enough to include it" (Paul McEvoy, Niels Bohr). "For Bohr, complementarity was an almost religious belief that the paradoxes of the quantum world must be accepted as fundamental, not to be 'solved' or trivialized by attempts to find out 'what's really going on down there.' Bohr used the word in an unusual way: the 'complementarity' of waves and particles, for example (or of position and momentum), meant that when one existed fully, its complement did not exist at all" (Louisa Gilder, The Age of Entanglement). "The lecture was published in Nature in 1928 in a revised form It sparked significant debate in the years that followed and solidified the boundaries between those who accepted Bohr's view of the consequences of quantum theory and those who were seeking a more 'realistic' microscopic theory or a more realistic interpretation of quantum theory itself" (McEvoy, P. 70).The paper was published almost simultaneously in English, Danish, English, French and German, the present English publication being the first.
