Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1906. Bound together in one contemp. halfcalf. Spine gilt. Minor scratches to spine. A stamp to titlepage and htitle. "Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Band 20. Herausgegeben von Paul Drude." , Portrait (Paul Drude), VIII,1048 pp. and 6 plates. Einstein papers: pp. 199-206 and 627-33. The entire volume offered. Both papers first edition. It was for the papers "Ueber einen die Erzeugung und Verwandlung des Lichtes betreffenden heuristischen Gesichtspunkt" of 1905 and "Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung...( Theory of light emission and absorption), the offered item), that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921."The quantum theory has affected virtually every branch of physics. Its earliest and one of its most significant developments was Einstein's application of the theory to what is known as the 'photo-electrical effect'....Einstein explained this effext by suggesting that the classical view that light is emitted in the form of continous waves must be abandoned. The photo-electrical effect could be explained only as an example of quantum action where the waves of light or X-rays are emitted in minute particles or bullets. It is he size of the bullet (the wave-lenght of the radiation) which determines the number of electrons ejected. It was for this, and not for the theory of relativity, that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. Einstein's two fundamental papers on this subject are "Ueber einem Erzeugung...." 1905 and Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung (the paper offered here)" (PMM the note to 391). In the second paper (Principle of the conservation of the centre of mass motion and the inertia of energy) he shows that the conservation of mass is a special application of his energy principle (E= Mc2) - Weil: 12 & 13.Among the many papers in this volume we have Max von Laue: Zur Thermodynamik der Inteferenzerscheinungen. pp. 365-378.

First appearance of a pioneer paper in statistical calculations of life-expectations., containing THE VERY FIRST APPLICATION OF A DIFFERENCE ENGINE TO MEDICAL STATISTICS."Farr's preliminary report (the paper offered), describing the use of the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to prepare life tables, was published 5 years before his "English Life Table". Farr, a pioneer in the quantitative study of morbidity and mortality, was chief statistician of the General Register Office, Englands central statistical office. Influenced by Babbage, he had long been interested in the use of a calculating machine, such as Babbage's Difference Engine to compute life tables; see page 854 of the present report, in which Farr refers to his 1843 letter on the subject to the registrar-general. Farr had seen and tested the machine's predecessor, the Scheutz Engine No. 2, when it was on display in London. It was at Farr's recommandation that the British government authorized in 1857 the sum of Pound 1200 for the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to be constructed by the firm Bryan Donkin, a manufacturer of machines for the color printing of bank notes and stamps....Farr's printing report, received by the Royal Society on March 17 of that year, was written while Scheutz Engine no. 3 was still "in the course of construction by Messr. Donkin" (p. 854). The reports table B1, "Life-Table of Healthy English Districts", made from stereotype plates produced by the calculator, represents the very first application of a difference engine to medical studies."(Hook and Norman, Origins of Cyperspace, No. 77.). - Garrison & Morton: 1700.1.

Although he accepted the phlogiston theory early in his career, Gadolin attempted to understand Lavoisier’s ideas. In a paper published in 1788 he tried to define phlogiston and admitted that the French explanation of combustion was superior to some phlogiston theories, but for a long time he was not wholly converted. His lectures always made use of the new chemistry, and he eventually became the spokesman in Scandinavia for Lavoisier’s nomenclature and combustion theory, often encountering Berzelius, opposition."(DSB).Poggendorff I, 827. - Neville I, p. 496.

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Showing 2 birds, one at the nest with 4 eggs, surrounded by flowers. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.
