Amsterdam, K.N.A.G., 1885. 8vo. In recent paper wrappers with brown title label pasted on the front wrappers. As extracted from "Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap". Vol. II. Very fine and clean. Pp. 213-228. First printing of the first report on the The Berlin Conference (of 1884-85), also known as the Congo Conference or West Africa Conference. It sought to regulate European colonisation and trade in Africa during the New Imperialism period. The General Act of the Berlin Conference, can be seen as the formalization of the Scramble for Africa and is by far the most severe infringement ever on African sovereignty. The conference ushered in a period of heightened colonial activity by European powers, while simultaneously eliminating most existing forms of African autonomy and self-governance."For at a time when an estimated 80% of Africa remained under traditional and local control, the purpose of the Berlin Conference had been for the Great Powers to establish rules amongst themselves for the colonization of Africa and the exploitation of Africa's resources. Including the division of territory, the drawing of maps, and the establishment of Congo -- as a personal possession of the Belgian King. Not surprisingly, no Africans had been invited to the Conference." (Calmettes, Berlin 1885: The Division of Africa). "Owing to the upsetting of Bismarck's carefully laid balance of power in European politics caused by Leopold's gamble and subsequent European race for colonies, Germany felt compelled to act and started launching expeditions of its own which frightened both British and French statesmen. Hoping to quickly soothe this brewing conflict, King Leopold II was able to convince France and Germany that common trade in Africa was in the best interests of all three countries. Under support from the British and the initiative of Portugal,Otto von Bismarck, German Chancellor, called on representatives of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden-Norway (union until 1905), the Ottoman Empire and the United States to take part in the Berlin Conference to work out policy." (Ngoyo, Federation of the Free States of Africa). The boarders drawn in Africa during the Berlin Conference had devastating consequences for Africa:" "The Berlin Conference was Africa's undoing in more ways than one. The colonial powers superimposed their domains on the African Continent. By the time Africa regained its independence after the late 1950s, the realm had acquired a legacy of political fragmentation that could neither be eliminated nor made to operate satisfactorily. The African politico-geographical map is thus a permanent liability that resulted from the three months of ignorant, greedy acquisitiveness during a period when Europe's search for minerals and markets had become insatiable." (Ibid). See The Mountains of the Moon, Mapping African Exploration, Princeton University.

Paris, Masson et Cie, Imprimerie Gauthier-Villars, 1897. 8vo. Bound with original printed yellow wrappers (wrappers to both the volume and to the parts) in contemp. hcalf, raised bands, gilt spine. Light wear along edges. Small stamp on verso of titlepage, on printed frontwrappers and on foot of p. 576. In "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 7me Series - Tome XI. (Entire volume offered). 576 pp. Perrin's paper: pp. 496-554. Textillustrations. Clean and fine. First appearance of Perrin's doctorial thesis, in which he definitly settled the question of the common nature of cathode rays and of the recently discovered X rays, showing them to be particles. The experiments prepared the way for J.J. Thomson's determination in 1897 of the charge-mass ratio of these particles, electrons. In 1896 Perrin won the Joule Prize of the Royal Society for his experiments on cathode rays and for his preliminary studies on Röntgen's X rays, these investigations formed the content of his thesis. Perrin received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1926 for this and other work on the discontinuous structure of matter, which put a definite end to the long struggle regarding the question of the physical reality of molecules."During the 1890s he was attracted to the study of cathode rays, which Crookes had shown to be electrically charged. Even so, there remained controversy whether they were particles (as it seemed they would have to be if they were charged) or whether Crooke's observations were in error and they were actually a form of wave radiation. Perrin settled the matter for all in 1895 by showing that the radiation could be made to impart a large negative charge to a cylinder upon which they fell. The cathode rays must, therefore, consist of negatively-charged material, and must be particles rather than wave. J.J. Thomson was able to determine the mass of the particles and to show that they were much smaller than atoms."(Asimov).The offered volume contains further notable papers. 14 Memoirs by Marcellin Berthelot.

Erfurt, J.J.F. Straube, 1768. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities and internally with occassional brownspotting. (4), 137, (3) pp. + 8 engraved plates (on 4 sheets of paper). The exceedingly rare first (only?) edition of Werner’s work providing instruction on anatomy specifically intended for painters and sculptors who need a detailed understanding of the human body to accurately depict it in their work. Furthermore the book is also aimed at beginners in surgery. The anatomical knowledge necessary for artists is not entirely unlike what was required for medical professionals, particularly surgeons. We have not been able to trace a single copy in the trade.

Erfurt, Straube, 1770. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with three raised bands. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Top of spine missing parts of leather. A few marginal stains and marks throughout. Plates with margnial brownspotting, otherwise a nice copy. Engraved title-page. (8), 132, (4) pp. + 9 plates. The exceedingly rare first (only?) edition of Werner’s work providing instruction on anatomy specifically intended for painters and sculptors who need a detailed understanding of the human body to accurately depict it in their work. The book covers the structure of muscles, bones and other anatomical features that are crucial for creating realistic representations of the human body. Furthermore the book is also aimed at beginners in surgery. The anatomical knowledge necessary for artists is not entirely unlike what was required for medical professionals, particularly surgeons. “Johan Werner Græbe (1741 in Eisleben, Prussia - 1781, in Helsingør, Denmark). He came to Denmark around 1758. Passed the surgical examination on March 30, 1764. Passed the final surgical exam on March 20, 1766. Surgeon in Helsingør, surgeon on the guard ship from September 2, 1767, gained citizenship on January 28, 1768. Married on December 2, 1767, in Helsingør to Ingeborg de Besehe, baptized on January 24, 1742, in Helsingør, buried there on December 22, 1779, daughter of City Surgeon Christoffer de B. and Anne Margrethe Meyer.” (Carøe, Den Danske Lægestand).

LANGEVIN, PAUL.

(Paris: Gauthier-Villars), 1908. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Seances de l'Academie des Sciences", Vol 146, No 10. Entire issue offered. Pp. 530-33. [Entire issue: Pp. 511-54]. First appearance of Langevin landmark paper in which "Langevin successfully applied Newtonian dynamics to a Brownian particle and so invented an analytical approach to random processes which has remained useful to this day." (Lemonsa, Paul Langevin’s 1908 paper, P. 1079). In 1908, three years after Albert Einstein initiated the modern study of random processes with his ground breaking paper on Brownian motion, Paul Langevin devised a very different but likewise successful description of Brownian motion. Both descriptions have since been generalizedinto mathematically distinct but physically equivalent tools for studying an important class of continuous random processes. Langevin's work, like Einstein's, remains current and is widely referenced and discussed."Langevin's approach to Brownian motion is, in his own words, ''in?nitely more simple'' than Einstein's. Indeed, his paper is apparently more simple and for this reason is attractive as an introduction to the subject. While Einstein, starting from reasonable hypotheses, derived and solved a partial differential equation (i.e., a Fokker-Planck equation) Governing the time evolution of the probability density of a Brownian particle, Langevin applied Newton's second law to a representative Brownian particle. In this way Langevin invented the ''F=ma'' of stochastic physics now called the ''Langevin equation.'' Today it is clear that the apparent simplicity of Langevin's approach was purchased at the cost of forcing into existence new mathematical objects with unusual properties. While Langevin manipulated these objects (Gaussian white noise and the stochastic differential equation) cautiously and intuitively, their formal properties have now been developed and widely applied. Thus Langevin's 1908 paper inspired new mathematics as well as new physics." (Lemonsa, Paul Langevin’s 1908 paper, P. 1082)."In 1908, Langevin, whose skill in kinetic theory had first been developed when he worked on ionic transport, turned briefly to the theory of Brownian motion developed by Einstein in 1905 and, via a more direct route, by Smoluchowski in 1906. The result was simplified, still-standard treatment which, unlike Smoluchowski’s, produced precisely Einstein’s formula for the mean-square displacement." (DSB) ,

Paris, Medard-Michel Brunet, 1699. 8vo. In a nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. A nice and clean copy. (20), 278, (1) pp. Second edition of this scarce early work first published in 1693 in which the author traces and analyses the causes of womens lack of rights and proposes methods for enabling women to improve themselves. The fact that the present work was re-edited five years after its initial release indicates a certain degree of popular appeal. However, not much is known about Pringy: “Her name appears most often in the pages of the monthly French gazette, Le Mercure galant, which announced both the text’s initial publication in 1693 and again its second edition a few months prior to publication. If nothing can defini¬tively be asserted regarding Pringy’s readership, we can gather, from the fact that the Mercure was instrumental in disseminating (some might say advertising) and thus determining trends and fashions, that Pringy enjoyed some attention for her works. Though we may never know the extent to which the Caracteres was given to young girls with the intent of correct¬ing or preventing these vices, Pringy’s treatise is unique in comparison to most contemporaneous moral analyses of women by women because of its ostensible pedagogical goal.” (LaPorta, “The Truth about Reasoning”: Veiled Propaganda and the Manipulation of Absolutist Authority in Eustache Le Noble’s La Pierre de touche politique (1688–1691))
