EULER, LEONHARD. - SOLVING FOR THE FIRST TIME THE CONTACT PROBLEM OF FRICTION.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45497
(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1750). 4to. No wrappers, as issued in "Mémoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres", tome IV, pp. 103-121 + pp. 122-132 + pp. 133-148 and 6 engraved plates (on 5). Three first editions by Euler. Euler's goal in the first paper is to show that certain phenomena that resulted from the eclipse of July 25, 1748 are evidence that the moon has an atmosphere that is almost 200 times less dense than that of the earth. (The phenomena Euler observed are optical effects of light passing close to a sharp edge, and not the refraction of a lunar atmosphere). The other papers on the physics of rigid bodies are groundbreaking as Euler here set forth what is known as "Euler's dynamical equations of the motion of the mass-center of any solid", and thus STATING FOR THE FIRST TIME THE LAW OF DRY FRICTION, mathematically. Euler explains his experiments with the inclined plane and discovers the DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KINETIC AND STATIC FRICTION."Leonhard Euler occupied himself with the mathematical point of view of friction as well as the experimental. He introduced the differentiation between static frictional forces and kinetic frictional forces, and solved the problem of rope friction, probably the first contact problem to be analytically solved in history. (1750, the papers offered). He was the first to lay the foundations of the mathematically way of dealing with the law of dry friction and in this way promoted further development. We have to thank for the symbol as the coefficient of friction. Euler worked with the idea that friction originates from the interlocation, between small triangular irregularities. This understanding survived, in different variations, for a hundred years and is also used today as the "Tomlinson Model" in connection with friction on atomic scale."(L. Popov "History of the Contact Mechanics and the Physics of Function", p.3).Eneström: E142, E143, E144.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1880. Without wrappers as issued in "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg.von G. Wiedemann.", Neue Folge Band IX, Heft 4. Titlepage to Bd. 9. Pp. 513-680 a. 1 folded engraved plate. + Neue Folge Band XI, Heft 9. Titlepage to Bd. 11. Pp. 1-176 a. 2 folded plates. Lorentz's paper; pp. 641-665 (of Heft 4). Lorenz's paper: pp. 70-103. (2 entire issues offered). A stamp on titlepapges and verso. Both clean and fine. First printing of these two fundamental papers, revealing a lasting result in the history of physics, as both authors INDEPENDENTLY OF EACH OTHER, discovered the mathematical formula for the dependence of refraction of light upon specific gravity. It is very interesting that they found the formula - now called the Lorenz-Lorentz Equation or Formula - with altogether different ways and methods. They both discovered the formula before 1880, L.V. Lorenz first, but, also independently, published their final versions in the same periodical, and in the same year (the 2 papers offered). - Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1880 P.

Internally fine with broad margins and clean, printed on good paper. 13,16,16,16,10,(2),12,(2),14,13,(1),13,(1) pp. and 10 fine engraved plates, known for their accuracy and details. First editions of the 9 tracts called "Epistolae", of which in all 14 were issued, containg Ruysch's answers to anatomical and physiological propositions proposed by different authors. "Ruysch, professor of anatomy at Leyden and Amsterdam, is notable for his method of injecting vessels. The recipe for the material used by Ruysch has remained a secret. He gave the first description of bronchial blood vessels and vascular plexuses of the heart, demonstrated the valves of the lymphatics, and made a great number of other importent discoveries in anatomy" (Garrison & Morton). - Ruysch's prepartions of corpses were known for their dramatic appearences. He prepared e.g. the corpse of a child as it were alive so that Pater the Great was inclined to kiss it. His preparations was well known by the public, many were exhibited in different places, and in 1717 Peter the Great bought his collection for 30.000 Guilders. Some of the items are still held by The Museum of the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. - Wellcome IV:pp. 597-98.

Paris, Victor Masson, 1858. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf, raised bands, gilt spine. Light wear along edges. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 3e Series - Tome 53. 512 pp. a. 2 folded engarved plates.(The entire volume offered). Couper's paper: pp. 469-489. Some scattered brownspots. First appearance of this milestone paper in organic chemistry - a shorter note was published in Comptes Rendus in June 1858 - in which, independently of Kekulé, Couper introduces the CONCEPT OF BONDS (represented as a dash or a dotted line) in chemistry and also observes the very importent fact, that carbon atoms forms the backbone of organic compounds."It was not till 1858 that a satisfactory theory of molecular constitution was advanced, simultaneously and endependently, by thwo young chemists, Friedrich August Kekulé and Archibald Scott Couper. The theory of molecular constitution put foreward....by Couper and Kekulé rested on two main postulates, the quadriivalency of carbon,....and the capacity of the carbon atom for mutual linking or combining together to form a carbon "chain". By this hypothesis of the mutual linking together of carbon atoms - which waslater confirmed by experiment - it was possible to explain the formation of organic compounds containing a large number of carbon atoms. On the foundation of their postulates two postulates, moreover, (they) showed how the molecular constitution or mutual linking together of the atoms of a compound could be represented diagrammatically and the relstions between different compounds made readily intelligible. In his classic paper "On a New Chemical Theory" (the paper offered here in its first appearance) advanced beyond Kekulé by representing the constitutions of the compounds by means of GRAPHIC FORMULA in which, as at the present day, the valencies pf the atoms are represented by lines....his formulae are similar to those at present in use..."(Findlay pp. 34 ff)"The theory of Kekulé and Couper gave the chemists the maeans of solving the problems of chemical constitution; and by means of the graphic or constitutional formulae it became possible to represent the molecular constitution of known compounds and to foresee the possible existence of isomeric compounds."(Findlay).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1858 C.The volume contains another importent, monumental memoir MARCELLIN BERTHELOT "Sur la Synthèse des Carbures D'Hydrogene", pp. 69-208. Here he prsents his review of his work in organic chemistry during the previous ten years. "In his conclusion Berthelot argued that chemistry differed from a descriptive science such as natural history by being creative and that in this it resembled the mathematical sciences."(DSB)

Hafniæ (Copenhagen), Melchior Martzan, 1634. Lille 8vo. Lidt senere hldrbd. Let rygforgyldning. Rester af titeletiket. Ryg lidt slidt. (4),54,(2) pp., 1 kobberstukket planche. De første blade løse. Mangler blad A8 (Pp. 11-12). The very scarce first edition of one of the first elementary textbooks in arithmetics published in Denmark. Christiania, Brøgger & Christie, 1867. Large 4to. Orig. full maroon cloth. Richly blindtooled on covers. A gilt medaillon on frontcover. A bit faded. Spine with some small cracks. All edges gilt. Equipped as a gift-copy. (2),74 pp., 18 plates. Clean and fine. First edition edition of the large French version of this pioneer work on the law of mass action, the discovery that the direction taken by a chemical reaction is dependent not merely on the mass of the various components of the reaction, but upon the concentration, that is, upon the mass present in a given volume. Since the pamphlet was published in Norwegian (1863), it escaped the notice of most chemists. It became translated into French (the item offered) and it still made no impression. By the then Van't Hoff had described this law partially, but the priority of Guldberg and Waage was however recognized when Gibb's work became known. It could then be seen, that the law of mass action followed naturally from the basic principles of chemical thermodynamics.
