London, Peter Elmsly, 1792. 4to. In recent marbled paper wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions". Including title-page of volume. Leaves reinforced in margin. (2), iii-vi, (2), 28 pp. + 1 folded plate. First edition of Herschel's important paper on his observations of the rings of Saturn. "Saturn exercised a special fascination for Herschel, and between 1789 and 1808 he devoted seven papers and part of an eighth to the planet, its ring, and its satellites. On 19 August 1787 Herschel suspected he had found a sixth and previously unknown satellite, but he was not able to confirm this until 28 August 1789, when his forty-foot telescope came into commission. A few days later he found a seventh satellite. For some months he carefully tracked the satellites, establishing for Mimas and Enceladus periods within seconds of the modern values, and giving evidence to show that Iapetus rotates in its period of revolution. He also made careful observations of the rings, which he believed to be solid. As the earth happened to be in the plane of the ring structure at the time, he compared the thickness of the ring when seen edge-on with the diameter of Jupiter's satellites; and although his estimate exceeds modern values, his method showed that the thickness did not exceed a few hundred miles." SAGNAC, GEORGES.

(Paris: Gauthier-Villars), 1913. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Seances de l'Academie des Sciences", Vol 157, No 17 & 25.. Entire issues offered. Pp. 708-714; Pp. 1410-13. [Entire issue: Pp. 665-736; pp. 1357-1492]. First appearance of Sagnac two seminal papers which together constitutes the first interferometry experiment aimed at observing the correlation of angular velocity and phase showing that if a beam of light is split and sent in two opposite directions around a closed path on a revolving platform with mirrors on its perimeter, and then the beams are recombined, they will exhibit interference effects. From this result Sagnac concluded that light propagates at a speed independent of the speed of the source. The motion of the earth through space had no apparent effect on the speed of the light beam, no matter how the platform was turned."Sagnac interpreted the shift in the position of the interference fringes in terms of an "ether wind" that gave the light beams traveling in opposite directions different velocities. He was convinced that the phenomenon observed with the rotating interferometer demonstrated the existence of an immobile ether. Sagnac later tried to develop a theory of electrodynamics that would retain classical ideas of space, time, and ether by analyzing the propagation of energy statistically and separately from the propagation of motion. He retained a lifelong dislike for relativity, and in 1923 he interpreted some observations of stellar color shift as being due to an ether wind, rather than as supporting the general theory of relativity. The results of Sagnac's interferometer experiments were used by some scientists in France as an argument against the theory of relativity. As late as 1937 Dufour and Prunier repeated the experiment in a modified form for that purpose. The experiment does not contradict relativity theory in any way, however, and in 1921 and 1937 Langevin responded with an explanation of how it should be interpreted." (DSB)

In: "Miscellanea Berolinensia, ad Incrementium scientiarum ex Scriptis Societati Regiæ Scientiarum exhibitis editia, Continuatio II." (6),346,(4) pp., 11, partly folded engraved plates. Scattered brownspots. Roemer's letter to Leibniz: pp. 276-78, 2 textillustrations. The entire volume offered. First printing of Roemer's letter to Leibniz in which he describes his plan for a new observatory and the circle-instrument."In a letter written to Leibniz, dated December 15, 1700, - (the offered item) - in reply to Leibniz's request for the most suitable plan for an observatory, Roemer describes his plans for the "Observatorium Tusculanum". He has an excellent discussion of the need of building the observatory so that it can best serve the function for which it is intended, namely, observation. He probably was thinking of the construction of the Paris Observatory, a beautiful building, but impractical as far as actual observational needs were concerned. He also describes the prime vertical transit and states his preference for the circle as compared to quadrants and sextants, saying that he would have confidence in a circle of four feet in diameter than a quadrant of ten." (I. Bernard Cohen in "Roemer and the first determination of the Velocity of Light", p. 48).

X,(2),53 pp. + XII,147 pp. + VIII,128 pp. Halftitle and titlepage to the first work with some brownspots in upper right corners. A few scattered brownspots and a few underlinings, otherwise internally fine and clean. From the library of Hans Rupe (with his exlibris on inside frontcover). Rupe became extraordinary professor for organic chemistry at the University of Basel. In 1912 , he was promoted to ordinary professor for organic chemistry. First German edition (in the adaptation of Wislicenus) of van't Hoff's epoch making work "La chimie dans l'espace", published 1875 (a French expanded translation of his dissertation of 1874), and in which he established the fact that optically active substances contain at least one "asymmetric" carbon atom, that is, a carbon atom linked with four different kinds of atoms or radicals. Together here with the second, much expanded version and also WITH THE FIRST GERMAN EDITION OF OF "Dix Années...", which includes nearly three times as much material as the first edition ("La Chimie dans l'Espace"). "His revolutionary ideas on the theory of the asymmetric carbon atom did not attract the attention of chemists, however, until Wislicenus asked van’t Hoff’s permission for a German translation by one of his pupils, Felix Herrmann."(DSB)."In 1874, at the age of twenty-two, and with his Ph.D., as yet a few months in the future, he published a startling paper on the structure of organic compounds. Chemists had been puzzling for more than half a centurt over the fact that some organic compounds were optically active while others were not. As long ago as Biot there had been suggestion that this was due to some sort of assymetry, but the nature and location of that asymmetry remained a mystery. Pasteur had located the asymmetry in crystals, but that did not help with respect to the optical activity of subsatnces in soolution.Van't Hoff suggested that the symmetry exisyted in the molecules themselves. He drew four valences of the carbon atom (each represented as a short line or "bond"), not two-dimensionally toward the four angles of a square, as Couper had done, but three-dimensionally toward the four angles of a tetrahedron. When the tetrahedral arrangement was considered, matters cleared up..." (Asimov's Biographical Encyclopedia..).Van't Hoff was the first to receive the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1901.Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1874 C.

VIII, 132, (4) pp. + folded plate. First edition with an illustration of this treatise on miniature painting on glass presented as a dialogue between the author and his female apprentice, a marquise. By 1766, with the release of this edition, Vispré had established himself in London, enjoying success as a portrait painter and miniaturist. He began exhibiting with the Society of Artists and later became a frequent participant at the Royal Academy.

Année 1772." pp. 185-221 and pp. 222-258. First edition of these two important papers. In the first paper "Sur une Nouvelle Espece de Calcul..." he made the most ambitious attempt to rebuild the foundation of the calculus. The paper is in fact an outline of his "Theorie des functions", issued later in 1797."This work greatly impressed Lacroix, Condorcet and Laplace. Based on the analogy between powers of biniminals and differentials, it is one of the sources of the symbolic calculuses of the nineteenth century. A typical example of Lagrange's thinking as an analyst in this sentence taken form the memoir: "Although the principle of the analogy (between powers and diffrentials) is nor self-evident, nevertheless, since the conclusions drawn from it are not thereby less exact, I shall make use of it to discover various theorems...""(Jean Itard in DSB). The second paper "Sur la Forme..."When D'Alembert red the paper he gave the following respons:"Your demonstration on imaginary roots seem to me to leave nothing to be desired, and I am very much obliged to you for the justice you have rendered to mine, which, in fact, has the minor fault (pwerhaps more apparant than real) of not being direct, bu which is quite simple and easy. D'Alembert was alluding to his Cause de vents (1747)."(DSB).

(16), 399, (3) pp. The exceedingly rare first edition of Ancillon’s influential history on the migration and settlement of French Huguenot refugees in the state of Brandenburg during the late 17th century. “Charles Ancillon (1659–1715), one of a distinguished family of French Protestants, was born on the 28th of July 1659, at Metz. His father, David Ancillon (1617–1692), was obliged to leave France on the revocation of the edict of Nantes, and became pastor of the French Protestant community in Berlin. Charles Ancillon studied law at Marburg, Geneva, and Paris, where he was called to the bar. In 1699 he succeeded Pufendorf as historiographer to the elector, and the same year replaced his uncle Joseph Ancillon as judge of all the French refugees in Brandenburg. London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1808. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1808 - Part I. Pp. 63-95 (Thomson) and pp. 96-102 (Wollaston:). Clean and fine. With titlepage to 1808, Part I. First appearance of these two historical papers in chemistry in which Thomson and Wollaston, independently, presents experimental proofs of John Dalton's "Law of Multiple Proportions", and thereby laying the foundations of the Atomic Theory. - These demonstrations went far to influence chemists favorably toward Dalton's atomic theory. "In January 1808 Thomson was the first to submit an experimental illustration of the law of multiple proportions, doing so at least four months before the publication of Dalton's "New System of Chemistry Philosophy" (1808). This paper, "On Oxalic Acid" also established a usefull method of determining empirical formulas."(DSB XIII, p. 373)."This paper is also importent as he here introduces quantified chemical symbolism for compounds, a compound with, for instance, two parts oxygen (w) and one part carbon (c) being denoted by 2w + c." (Parkinson in "Breakthroughs", 1808 C)."In 1808 he (Wollaston) described his experiments on carbonates, sulfates, and oxalates, which proved that the composition of these substances was regulated by the law of multiple proportions. These additional instances of the law were easely verifiable and were often mentioned as standard examples. Wollaston accepted that his findings were merely particular instances of Dalton's assertion that the atoms of elements united one to one, or by simple multiple relation."(DSB XIV, p.488).
