Johan Cornelius Tuxen (1820-1883) var søn af kommandørkaptajn Peder Mandrup Tuxen og Elisabeth Marie Simonsen. Karrieren var vel nærmest udstukket på forhånd, for også farfaren havde været søofficer, og samme vej gik flere af brødrene. Så i 1834 blev Tuxen søkadet, og i 1840 blev han belønnet med den Gernerske Præmiemedaille, da han bestod sin afgangsprøve og blev udnævnt til sekondløjtnant. Tuxen førte flere skibe i sin linietjeneste, herunder i 1848 dampskibet ""Royal Adelaide"" og i 1864 skonnerten ""Dana"" under blokaden af Danzig. Fra 1848 til 1867 var han lærer i matematik og navigation ved Søkadetakademiet. I 1875 afgik han fra flåden med rang af kommandør. Tuxen var også forfatter og skrev foruden en række artikler både lærebøger og populærvidenskabelige værker samt historiske bøger. Npf.. Dansk
