Paris, Crochard, 1838. No wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", 2e Series, Tome 68, Cahier 1. Pp. 1-112. With titlepage to vol. 68. Liebig's paper: pp. 1-42. Clean and fine. A few later leaves with some brownspots. This milestone paper on organic acids, in which Liebig set forth the now accepted view, that hydrogen is the essential element in acids and that acid are salts of hydrogen. The paper appeared simultaneously in German ("Über die Constitution der organischen Sauren") and French. The offered paper is the French version."The paper on organic acids was one of Liebig’s finest achievements, reflecting the best of the attributes that had marked his previous work. He based his position on precise analyses of numerous compounds. Some concerned substances he had discovered, but many were refinements of analyses done by others. He had not originated the theories he defended, but had greatly extended approaches drawn from Davy, Graham, Pelouze, and others. Through his extensive knowledge of compounds and reactions, he was able to amass impressive evidence for his inferences. He displayed a realistic sense of the value and limits of theoretical conceptions. He utilized flexibly such currently accepted foundations of reasoning as the radical theory. He was able to weld these elements into a comprehensive, unifying whole. He took a major step in one of the most important revisions in general chemical theory since the acceptance of Lavoisier’s system of chemistry: a revision completed a few years later in the more universal statement of the hydrogen theory of acids by Liebig’s former student, Gerhardt."(DSB).

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two birds, both sexes in a tree, foliage and fruits.. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

(Litho, The American Physical Society), 1987. Royal8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. In "Physical Review Letters" Vol. 59, Number 4, July 27, 1987. A few traces are having been bend to extremities. Small label with subscriber's name printed on to back wrapper. Otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 381-84. [Entire volume: 381-519, (5) pp.]. First printing of Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld landmark paper in which they proposed their self-organized criticality (SOC) theory or the Abelian sandpile model: the mechanisms by which complexity arises in nature. It is one of the very few evolutionary models to challenge Darwinism. It is regarded as one of the most profound and fundamental theories put forth in the later part of the 20th century and the paper is one of the most frequently-cited papers in the last few decades. Its concepts have been applied across fields as diverse as geophysics, physical cosmology, evolutionary biology and ecology, bio-inspired computing and optimization (mathematics), economics, quantum gravity, sociology, solar physics, plasma physics, neurobiology and many others.SOC is typically observed in slowly driven non-equilibrium systems with extended degrees of freedom and a high level of nonlinearity. "The nonlinear dynamics approach encapsulated in GCT envisions self-organization as an asymptotic process of approaching stability through a series of intermediate states (also known as evolution). There exists, however, a fundamentally different process known as self-organized criticality (SOC) in which an avalanche-like transformation rapidly moves the system into a self-organized mode. A popular metaphor for SOC is the sandpile paradigm. If additional sand grains are randomly added on top of a sand pile then inevitably an instance will occur when local steepness of the slope surpasses a certain critical threshold thus causing local failure of structural stability. The excess of material will cascade into adjacent areas of the pile causing their failures as well. Thus an avalanche will occur, shifting the entire sandpile into a new stable state. What is fundamentally important in this process is that a random local event quickly propagates through the entire system, thus establishing longrange correlations within the system" (Rosenfeld, Global Consensus Theorem and Self-Organized Criticality)."Ask the average person, What is the theory of evolution? and you are likely to get answers like "natural selection", or "survival of the fittest", or "Darwin's theory". Because these ideas are systematically taught in classrooms, they may represent the only evolutionary theory people know. But, ask, What is the theory of Earth evolution? you will likely get a blank stare, or at best a superficial discussion of the fossil record. The Earth as a multi-faceted evolutionary system that undergoes continuous change through time was incorporated in the National Science Education Standards, even if it is absent from many contemporary curricula and common perceptions. Darwinism, however, is not the only mechanism of evolution. If we define evolutionary change as any process that leads to increases in complexity, diversity, order, and/or interconnectedness then there are at least three distinct mechanisms, or theories of evolution: elaboration, self-organization, and fractionation." (Journal of Geoscience Education, v. 58, n. 2, March, 2010, p. 58-64).

(Berlin, Uppsala & Stockholm, Paris, 1886). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Acta Mathematica. Hrsg. von G. Mittag-Leffler.", Bd. 8, pp. 295-344. First edition. "The full recognition of the nature of those divergent series that are useful in the representation and calculation of functions and a formal definition of those series wer achieved by Poincaré and Stieltjes independently in 1886. Poincaré called these series asymptotic while Stieltjes continued to use the term semiconvergent. Poincaré took up the subject in order to further the solution of linear differential equations. Impressed by the usefulness of divergent series in astronomy, he sought to determine which were useful and why. he succededed in islolating and formulating the essential property...Poincaré applied his theory of asymptotic series to diffrential equations, and theree are many such uses in his treatise on celestical mechanics, 'Les Methodes nouvelles de la mechanique céleste". Haye, Chez J. Neaulme, 1741. Small 8vo. Cont. full mottled calf w. five raised bands on back, back richly gilt. Small holes and lack of leather to lower capital and back-hinge, due to insect-bites. Bdg. somewhat worn. Internally a bit of brownspotting and occationally a little soiling, but overall fine. Engr. frontispiece (= engr. t-p. dated 1707), 8 full-page engr. plates and 3 about half-page engr. vignettes. (6), XVIII, 394, (6) pp. This is the Dutch reprint (in French) (also called the "pirated edition") of the first edition from 1706/07, with the engraved title-page from this. The second edition appeared in 1747. "In 1741 Neaulme issued a pirated edition which again, apart from variations on the title-page, is identical to the 1706 edition. Encouraged by this pirated edition Frezier wrote a second edition which appeared in 1747 in three differing versions." (C. Philip, p. 59). Very important reference-work on firewirks. "Frezier was probably one of the most important pyrotechnics in the mid 18th century..." (C. Philip, p. 58). He borrows heavily from other authors, but his works are interesting, also as they scrupulously cite the sources. The plates show different kinds of fireworks, with many illustrations on each and the vignettes show displays of fireworks, as this work also deals much with the conduct and displaying of these.

On good paper, clean and fine. First edition. Malebranche is one of the major philosophers of Cartesianism and his philosophy sought to synthesize Cartesianism with the thought of St. Augustin and with Neoplatonism. His "Entretiens..." (Dialogues on Metaphysics and Religion) as a series of 14 dialogues, is perhaps the best introduction to his philosophy in general."The French Cartesian Nicolas Malebranche was hailed by his contemporary, Pierre Bayle, as "the premier philosopher of our age." Over the course of his philosophical career, Malebranche published major works on metaphysics, theology, and ethics, as well as studies on optics, the laws of motion and the nature of color. He is known principally for offering a highly original synthesis of the views of his intellectual heroes, St. Augustine and René Descartes. Two distinctive reults of this synthesis are Malebranche's doctrine that we see bodies through ideas in God and his occasionalist conclusion that God is the only real cause." (1913).

The scarce first edition of the work in which Steenstrup describes his discovery of the principle of 'alternation of generations', sexual and asexual in plants and animals. "(Steenstrup) showed that certain animals produce offspring which never resemble them but which, on the other hand, bring forth progeny which return in form and nature to their grandparents or more distant ancestors." (Garrison & Morton No 217). A German translation was published the same year, and an English in 1845. Norman 2009 (German translation). "The second major publication - (the first dealing with geology) - of 1842 was "Om Forplantning og Udvikling gjennem vexlende Generationsrækker...", (the work offered), Steenstrup's comprehensive presentation of the form of reproduction that he called 'alternation of generations', that is, the alternation of asexual and sexual reproduction, or metagenesis. This phenomenon had previously been described by Chamisso, but Steenstrup included a greater number of observations, based on a significantly wider range of subjects, and provided an importent chapter on its meaning. Steenstrup's growing reputation, won him an appointment as professor of zoology at the University of Copenhagen, where he tought from 1846 until 1885."(DSB XII, p. 9).
