Internally nice and clean. (14), 1552, (72) pp. The rare first edition of Osiander’s commentary on Hugo Grotius's seminal work “De Jure Belli” in which he is analyzing Grotius's legal and ethical arguments through a Lutheran theological lens “Major Lutheran theologians such as Johann Adam Osiander, who taught at Tübingen in the second half of the seventeenth century and counted many Swedish youngsters among his students, engaged intensely with Grotius’s De iure belli ac pacis. Moreover, Lutheran theologians thoroughly engaged with contract law, in particular, recycling ideas and concepts from the Roman law, the early-modern scholastic tradition and Grotius, but integrating them into a Biblical framework, especially the Eighth Commandment prohibiting false testimony.”

Leipzig, Grosse & Gleditsch, 1717. 4to. In: "Acta Eruditorum Anno MDCCXVII". The entire volume offered in contemporary full vellum. Hand written title on spine. A yellow label pasted on to top of spine. A small stamp to title-page and free front end-paper. Library label to pasted down front free end-paper. As usual with various browning to leaves and plates. Pp. 317-322; Pp. 322-336; Pp. 353-360; Pp. 360-362. [Entire volume: (4), 553, (39) pp. + seven engraved plates.]. First printing of the famous Libnitz-issue of Acta Eruditorum published a year after the death of Leibnitz, including the renowned obituary by the German philosopher Christian Wolff. In 1706, Leibniz recommended Wolff for the Professorship at Halle, the post Wolff held for seventeen years until his dismissal, and in 1711, Leibniz sponsored Wolff's membership to the Berlin Academy. It is also mentioned that during the year of Leibniz's death in 1716, Leibniz visited Wolff in Halle when returning to Hanover from Vienna. To honor Leibnitz memory Wolff undertook the project of writing ELOGIUM GODOFREDI GUILIEMI LEIBNITII, a treatise of the life of Leibnitz. As early as 1679 George I, acting as Leibnitz patron, directed him to write the history of the house of Brunswick. Immediately after he began arranging material he had collected. The work was, however, only the preparatory steps when Leibnitz died in 1716 and the work was never published. The present paper, NOTITIA DE HISTORIA BRUNSUICENSI, is the only part of the work, which could have become a opus magnum with historiography, that has ever been published. The volume also contains:Goldbach, Christian. Temperamentum Musicum Universale. Pp. 114-15.And many other papers by influential contemporary mathematicians, philosophers and historians.

Both papers first edition. It was for the papers "Ueber einen die Erzeugung und Verwandlung des Lichtes betreffenden heuristischen Gesichtspunkt" of 1905 and "Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung...( Theory of light emission and absorption), the offered item), that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921."The quantum theory has affected virtually every branch of physics. Its earliest and one of its most significant developments was Einstein's application of the theory to what is known as the 'photo-electrical effect'....Einstein explained this effext by suggesting that the classical view that light is emitted in the form of continous waves must be abandoned. The photo-electrical effect could be explained only as an example of quantum action where the waves of light or X-rays are emitted in minute particles or bullets. It is he size of the bullet (the wave-lenght of the radiation) which determines the number of electrons ejected. It was for this, and not for the theory of relativity, that Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921. Einstein's two fundamental papers on this subject are "Ueber einem Erzeugung...." 1905 and Zur Theorie der Lichterzeugung (the paper offered here)" (PMM the note to 391). In the second paper (Principle of the conservation of the centre of mass motion and the inertia of energy) he shows that the conservation of mass is a special application of his energy principle (E= Mc2) - Weil: 12 & 13.Among the many papers in this volume we have Max von Laue: Zur Thermodynamik der Inteferenzerscheinungen. pp. 365-378.

Amsterdam, K.N.A.G., 1885. 8vo. In recent paper wrappers with brown title label pasted on the front wrappers. As extracted from "Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap". Vol. II. Very fine and clean. Pp. 213-228. First printing of the first report on the The Berlin Conference (of 1884-85), also known as the Congo Conference or West Africa Conference. It sought to regulate European colonisation and trade in Africa during the New Imperialism period. The General Act of the Berlin Conference, can be seen as the formalization of the Scramble for Africa and is by far the most severe infringement ever on African sovereignty. The conference ushered in a period of heightened colonial activity by European powers, while simultaneously eliminating most existing forms of African autonomy and self-governance."For at a time when an estimated 80% of Africa remained under traditional and local control, the purpose of the Berlin Conference had been for the Great Powers to establish rules amongst themselves for the colonization of Africa and the exploitation of Africa's resources. Including the division of territory, the drawing of maps, and the establishment of Congo -- as a personal possession of the Belgian King. Not surprisingly, no Africans had been invited to the Conference." (Calmettes, Berlin 1885: The Division of Africa). "Owing to the upsetting of Bismarck's carefully laid balance of power in European politics caused by Leopold's gamble and subsequent European race for colonies, Germany felt compelled to act and started launching expeditions of its own which frightened both British and French statesmen. Hoping to quickly soothe this brewing conflict, King Leopold II was able to convince France and Germany that common trade in Africa was in the best interests of all three countries. Under support from the British and the initiative of Portugal,Otto von Bismarck, German Chancellor, called on representatives of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden-Norway (union until 1905), the Ottoman Empire and the United States to take part in the Berlin Conference to work out policy." (Ngoyo, Federation of the Free States of Africa). The boarders drawn in Africa during the Berlin Conference had devastating consequences for Africa:" "The Berlin Conference was Africa's undoing in more ways than one. The colonial powers superimposed their domains on the African Continent. By the time Africa regained its independence after the late 1950s, the realm had acquired a legacy of political fragmentation that could neither be eliminated nor made to operate satisfactorily. The African politico-geographical map is thus a permanent liability that resulted from the three months of ignorant, greedy acquisitiveness during a period when Europe's search for minerals and markets had become insatiable." (Ibid). See The Mountains of the Moon, Mapping African Exploration, Princeton University.

Light wear along edges. Small stamp on verso of titlepage, on printed frontwrappers and on foot of p. 576. In "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 7me Series - Tome XI. (Entire volume offered). 576 pp. Perrin's paper: pp. 496-554. Textillustrations. Clean and fine. First appearance of Perrin's doctorial thesis, in which he definitly settled the question of the common nature of cathode rays and of the recently discovered X rays, showing them to be particles. The experiments prepared the way for J.J. Thomson's determination in 1897 of the charge-mass ratio of these particles, electrons. In 1896 Perrin won the Joule Prize of the Royal Society for his experiments on cathode rays and for his preliminary studies on Röntgen's X rays, these investigations formed the content of his thesis. Perrin received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1926 for this and other work on the discontinuous structure of matter, which put a definite end to the long struggle regarding the question of the physical reality of molecules."During the 1890s he was attracted to the study of cathode rays, which Crookes had shown to be electrically charged. Even so, there remained controversy whether they were particles (as it seemed they would have to be if they were charged) or whether Crooke's observations were in error and they were actually a form of wave radiation. Perrin settled the matter for all in 1895 by showing that the radiation could be made to impart a large negative charge to a cylinder upon which they fell. The cathode rays must, therefore, consist of negatively-charged material, and must be particles rather than wave. J.J. Thomson was able to determine the mass of the particles and to show that they were much smaller than atoms."(Asimov).The offered volume contains further notable papers. 14 Memoirs by Marcellin Berthelot.

Light wear to extremities and internally with occassional brownspotting. (4), 137, (3) pp. + 8 engraved plates (on 4 sheets of paper). The exceedingly rare first (only?) edition of Werner’s work providing instruction on anatomy specifically intended for painters and sculptors who need a detailed understanding of the human body to accurately depict it in their work. Furthermore the book is also aimed at beginners in surgery. The anatomical knowledge necessary for artists is not entirely unlike what was required for medical professionals, particularly surgeons. We have not been able to trace a single copy in the trade.
