London, 1774. 8vo. Very nice, contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilt spine. Gilt line to edges of boards. Marbled edges. A bit of minor scattered brownspotting and some smaller dampstaining towards end. All in all a very nice copy. (4), III, (1), 151 pp. Beautiful woodcut vignettes. Possibly first edition. One of three editions printed in 1774, none of which has been established as the true first. All three editions are printed in London but differ in number of pages, the other two having 96 and 84 respectively, ours having 151. This very interesting work of the French Enlightenment is probably not written by Helvetius, but by whom is not known. It does stay within the controversial lines of the great Enlightenment philosophers, though, probably being the reson why the author has never been identified. It has a lot in common with d'Holbach's monumental "Système de la Nature" from 1770, which constitutes the main work of materialism and one of the most important works of natural philosophy. Tchermerzine VI:195.

Cracovie, Imprimerie de L'Université, 1910 + 1911. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Two offprints from "Bulletin de L'Académie des Sciences de Cracovie", Mai, 1910 & Octobre, 1911. Both very fine and clean. Pp. (2), 130-53; Pp. (1), 549-57. Scarce offprint of Smoluchowski's important paper in which he documented that a layer of smooth spherical particles in vacuum may be used as an effective thermal insulator."This was discovered by M. Smoluchowski some forty years ago. He investigated both theoretically and experimentally the thermal conductivity of powders, and concluded that filling the space between the walls of a Dewar vessel with a suitable powder would provide improved insulation by reducing the convective currents as well as the radiation and, moreover, would improve the vacuum by absorption. His application for a patent resulted in a long argument with the German Patent Office, whose examiners were reluctant to admit that any material agent could provide a better insulation than 'absolute' vacuum. At that time a large metallic Dewar vessel with its interstice filled with powdered active carbon was built at the Physical Institute of the University in Lwów, and showed the expected high insulating properties." London, Macmillan and Co. 1866. 8vo. 2 volumes, both in the original green pictoral cloth. Light wear to upper and lower part of spines. Front free end-paper in vol. 1 with repair and the large folded general map of the country (erroneously called for in vol. 2) reinforced in margin and with two small tears. A fine and clean set, housed in custom made red clam shell box. XXX, 395; IX, 384 pp. + double-portrait frontispiece in volume 1, lithograph frontispiece in volume 2, 2 maps (1 large folding), 13 full-page plates, 20 illustrations in text. First edition of Baker's famous account of his discovery of the last great source of the Nile, Speke and Grant having established Lake Victoria Nyanza as the source of the White Nile and Bruce discovering the source of the Blue. The present work constitute one of the great travel narratives on African exploration. “First published in two illustrated volumes in 1866, this account of his most celebrated expedition is amongst the most important works of its type. Baker promises 'to take the reader by the hand, and lead him step by step … through scorching deserts and thirsty sands; through swamp and jungle … until I bring him, faint with the wearying journey, to that high cliff … from which he shall look down upon the vast Albert Lake and drink with me from the sources of the Nile!' Volume 2 finds Baker a prisoner of a native king. Baker offers a number of 'gifts' to buy his release, and after an arduous journey, with his wife in a coma, in March 1864 he reaches Luta N'zige, which he renames in memory of Prince Albert. A compelling account of an historic adventure.” (Editor’s note to the facsimile reprint published by Cambridge University Press (2011)) Czech (Africa) p.10 Hilmy I p.50

Amsterdam, Changuion, 1735. 8vo. In contemporary full sprinkled calf with five raised bands with richly gilt spine. Gilt frame to boards and edges of boards gilt. Small paper label pasted on to upper compartment of spine. Extremities with wear, boards with scratches and missing small part of the leather. Internally very fine and clean. (14), 251 pp. This unoffical second edition was published the year after the first edition (1734) and a year before the official second edition (published in 1736). Here Melon discusses various economic principles and policies, focusing on the role of commerce and trade in the prosperity of nations: “"His Essai' is noteworthy not only because it constitutes the first systematic presentation of mercantilist doctrines to appear in France but also because it adumbrates the transition to physiocracy" (ESS X, 305). Melon's "Essai politique sur le commerce" is considered a significant work in the history of economic thought, particularly for its advocacy of free trade and its insights into the functioning of markets. It contributed to the development of liberal economic ideas that would later influence thinkers such as Adam Smith and the classical economists.

It is the work done with Leopold Indfeld and Banesh Hoffmann on the N-body problem of motion. In these papers, the gravitational field is no longer treated as external. Instead, it and the motion of its (singular) sources are treated simultaneously. A new approximation scheme is introduced in which the fields are no longer necessarily weak but in which the source velocities are small compared with the light velocity... Some neath marginal notes in 2 contemporary hands. Second edition of volume one, and first edition of volume two. In the 15 century chronicle "Vetus Chronicon Holsatiae", first printed here by Leibnitz, states, that the Danes were of the Tribe of Dan, while the Jutes the Jews. This is the first announcement of the theory later called Nordic Israelism or Norse Israelism. "It is the belief that Scandinavian peoples, or the Nordic countries (Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) descend from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. Although there is evidence of such a belief from literature during the Early Modern Period, Nordic Israelism as a movement and ideology only emerged in the latter half of the 19th century among several early proponents of British Israelism."(Wikipedia).Ravier: 49 (tome I), 44 (Tome II, but Ravier is not clear on this point)

Leipzig, Weidmannischen Buchhandlung, 1796 - 1802. 8vo. Uniformly bound in six contemporary marbled paper covered board with with gilt lettering to spine and single line gilt ruled fillets to boards. Marbled paper on spines almost completely worn of. Internally very nice and clean. XVI, 568 pp.; XII, 562, (2) pp.; VIII, 595, (2) pp.; X, 605 pp.; XIV, 508 pp.; VI, 344 pp. The uncommon first edition, rarely found complete, of Voss’ work extensive work on governmental studies. Voss “most important and at the same time most comprehensive work is his textbook on governmental studies in four volumes, which were published between 1797 and 1800. Perhaps not surprising, given his long friendship with August Ludwig Schlözer, he explicitly followed the latter’s ‘Grundriss’, presenting a complete System of Governmental Studies for the period around 1800. It was deeply influenced by Kant, as is especially clear in his critical discussion of the enlightened absolutism in political science characteristic of the eighteenth century. Voss follows Kant’s emphasis on man as an end in itself. Thus he places the individual and his right at the center of his account. Though Voss advocated a monarchic and aristocratic system, he emphasized human rights as the primary concern of the state. In this he dissociated himself from the ancient régime” (The Bloomsbury Dictionary of Eighteenth-century German Philosophers, p. 822) Christian Daniel Voss (1761 – 1821) started his teaching career as a private tutor in Brunswick. In 1788 he joined the regular teaching staff at the Pädagogium in Halle. By 1795, he was appointed as a counsellor for Weimar-Saxony. In 1799 he became an associate professor at the Prussian University of Halle, and in 1808, he advanced to the position of professor of civil law and cameralistic sciences.
