London, Printed for Nathanial Ponder, 1680. 4to. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands. Edges of boards gilt. Small paper-label pasted on to upper part of spine. Light wear to extremities. Corners bumped. Light occassional marginal browning, but generally a nice and clean copy. (8), 400 pp. Wanting the frontispiece (Erroneously paginated as follows: Pp. 1-167 & 176-400. Complete, except for frontispiece). Later edition of Owen’s highly influential work on Psalm 130 also known as the "De Profundis" or "Out of the Depths". This work reflects Owen's commitment to both the rigorous study of Scripture and the practical application of biblical truths to the lives of believers. John Owen (1616-1683) was a prominent English theologian and minister in the Puritan tradition during the 17th century. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest theological minds in the Reformed tradition. Owen was born in Stadhampton, Oxfordshire, England, and he attended Queen's College, Oxford, where he studied classics and theology. Owen's theological writings covered a wide range of topics, including theology proper, soteriology, ecclesiology, and pneumatology. He was a staunch defender of Calvinism and Reformed theology, and he engaged in theological debates with various religious factions of his time, including Arminians and Socinians, two different branches of Pietism.

London, 1774. 8vo. Very nice, contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilt spine. Gilt line to edges of boards. Marbled edges. A bit of minor scattered brownspotting and some smaller dampstaining towards end. All in all a very nice copy. (4), III, (1), 151 pp. Beautiful woodcut vignettes. Possibly first edition. One of three editions printed in 1774, none of which has been established as the true first. All three editions are printed in London but differ in number of pages, the other two having 96 and 84 respectively, ours having 151. This very interesting work of the French Enlightenment is probably not written by Helvetius, but by whom is not known. It does stay within the controversial lines of the great Enlightenment philosophers, though, probably being the reson why the author has never been identified. It has a lot in common with d'Holbach's monumental "Système de la Nature" from 1770, which constitutes the main work of materialism and one of the most important works of natural philosophy. Tchermerzine VI:195.

Both very fine and clean. Pp. (2), 130-53; Pp. (1), 549-57. Scarce offprint of Smoluchowski's important paper in which he documented that a layer of smooth spherical particles in vacuum may be used as an effective thermal insulator."This was discovered by M. Smoluchowski some forty years ago. He investigated both theoretically and experimentally the thermal conductivity of powders, and concluded that filling the space between the walls of a Dewar vessel with a suitable powder would provide improved insulation by reducing the convective currents as well as the radiation and, moreover, would improve the vacuum by absorption. His application for a patent resulted in a long argument with the German Patent Office, whose examiners were reluctant to admit that any material agent could provide a better insulation than 'absolute' vacuum. At that time a large metallic Dewar vessel with its interstice filled with powdered active carbon was built at the Physical Institute of the University in Lwów, and showed the expected high insulating properties." HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - INDICATION OF THE UNIVERSALITY OF NEWTON'S LAWS OF MOTION - BINARY STARS.

(London, Bulwer and Co., 1803 a. 1804). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London." Year 1803-Part II. Pp. 339-382 and 2 engraved plates. a. Year 1804-Part II. Pp. 353-384 a. 1 engraved plate. Light browning to a few margins. 2 plates with scattered brownspots, otherwise clean and wide-margined. First appearance of these fundamental paper in cosmology and physics as they contains the FIRST OBSERVATIONAL DATA TO SUPPORT THAT NEWTON'S DYNAMICAL LAWS HOLDS OUTSIDE THE SOLAR SYSTEM. Herschel shows here that the circulating motions of double-stars were under gravitational forces. Until then the validity of the law of gravity was only established within the solar system. Now, a century after the establishment of the law, it was traced out in the motion of incredibly distant stars and the theory first truly earned its title of Universal. The exact proof of the mutual gravitation of the double-stars was only obtained five years after Herschel's death, when the motions of the stars were more precisely dtermined. One of the most notable of Herschel's discoveries of double-stars, binary stars. A first cataloque of such pairs was published early in 1782 and contained 269, of which 227 were new discoveries. "Twenty years after the publication of his first cataloque Herschel was of Michell's opinion - Michell had expressed the opinion that the odds in favour of a physical relation between the members of Herschel's newly discovered double stars were "beyond arithmetic" - but was able to support it by evidence of an entirely novel and much more direct character. A series of observations of Castor, presented in two papers in the "Philosophical Transaction" in 1803 and 1804 (the paperS offered ), which were fortunately supplemented by an observation of Bradley's in 1759, had shewn a progressive alteration in the direction of the line joining its two components, of such a character as to leave no doubt that the two stars were revolving round one another; and there were five oher cases in which a similar motion was observed...it was shown that the double-star was really formed by a connected pair of stars near enough to influence one another's mortion."(Berry in "A Short History of Astronomy" pp. 342-43).

A faint dampstain to some leaves in inner margins, otherwise clean. Second Ferman edition. The first part deals mainly with the artillery and its technical aspects and the second part with fireworks. The Italian physician, alchemist and cartographer, Alexis of Piedmont or Girolamo Ruscelli, was born in Viterbo, Italy around 1500 (perhaps earlier), and died in Venice, Italy around 1565. He is (probably) the author of the important "Secreti", published in 1555, and the "Secreti Nuovi", published in 1567, the first of which was extremely popular and of considerable influence, the second of which must be said to be of the greatest interest, but apparently not very widely read. He also translated the Geography of Ptolemy into Italian, and his books on war and fire-works are now quite scarce. Most of his works were popular in his life-time and the century to come, and they were translated into Latin, German, French and Welsh. At a very early point he indicated the plan of a scientific academy, and he must be said to be a very interesting 16th century scientist. Cockle, 663.

HAMSUN, KNUT - TORE HAMSUN.

Dateret "1942".

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1822. Without wrappers as extracted from "Annalen der Physik und der Physikalischen Chemie. Hrsg. Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 71. Titlepage to vol. 71, pp. 124-171 a. pp. 172-176 and 1 folded engraved plate showing experimental apparatus. Clean and fine. First German edition of Faraday's famous paper "On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism. By Michael Faraday, Chemical Assistant in the Royal Institution. (1821)", recording one of the most influential discoveries in physics in the 19th Century, as Faraday here, as the very first, showed how to CONVERT THE ELECTRICAL AND MAGNETIC FORCES INTO CONTINUAL MECHANICAL MOVEMENT, thus creating the first electric motor, using the principle of electromagnetic rotation. In the first paper he introduced for the first time the concept of "LINE OF FORCE" and hereby deliniating "a picture of the universe as consisting of fields of various types, one that was more subtle, flexible, and useful than the purely mechanical picture of Galileo and Newton. The FIELD UNIVERSE was to be recognized with Maxwell half a century later and with Einstein, after an interval of another halfcentury."(Asimov)."Ever since Hans Christian oersted's announcement of the discovery of electromagnetism in the summer of 1820, editors of scientific journals had been inundated with articles on the phenomenon. Theories to explain it had multiplied, and the net effect was confusion. Were all the effects reported real ? Did the theories fit the facts ? It was to answer these questions that Phillips turned to Faraday and asked him to review the experiments and theories of the past months and separate truth from fiction,...Faraday agreed to to undertake a short historical survey...His entusiasm was aroused in September 1821, when he turned to the investigation of the peculiar nature of the magnetic force created by an electrical current. Oersted had spoken of the "electrical conflict" surrounding the wiree and had noted that "this conflict performs circles".....Yet as he experimented he saw precisely what was happening. Using a small magnetic needle to map the pattern of magnetic force, he noted that oneof the poles of the needle turned in a circle as it was carried around the wire. He immediately realized that a single magnetic pole would rotate unceasingly around a current-carrying wire so long as the current flowed. He then set about devising an instrument to illustrate this effect. His paper "On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism" appeared in the 21 October 1821 issue of the "Quarterly Journal of Science" (The paper offered in the first German edition). It records the first conversion of electrical into mechanical energy. It also contained the first notion of the line of force."(DSB IV, pp. 533).

Closed tear to upper margin of engraved half-title. Internally nice and clean. (102), 939 pp. + frontispiece. Rare first edition of Walther’s work on Mosaic law as outlined in the Pentateuch. Michael Walther (1593-1662) was a German theologian and scholar born in Nuremberg. Initially studying medicine in Wittenberg, he later shifted his focus to theology, continuing his studies in Giessen and Jena. He served as an adjunct at the philosophical faculty in Jena before becoming court preacher to Duchess Elisabeth of Braunschweig and a professor in Helmstedt. In 1626, Waltherus was appointed as the general superintendent in East Frisia, and in 1642, he assumed the same role in Celle, where he remained until his death on February 9, 1662. Waltherus was known for his work in Protestant Bible studies, approaching critical questions with a Lutheran orthodox perspective. Waltherus discussed canonical books, distinguishing between those with unquestionable apostolic authorship and those with some doubts, such as the Epistle to the Hebrews, the letters of James and Jude, and the Apocalypse.
