Leipzig, Fues's Verlag, 1876. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Minor soiling to wrappers. Right-bottom corner on frontwrapper slightly bumped. Otherwise fine and clean. XIII, (1), 82 pp. The very scarce first printing of Avenarius' Habilitationsschrift, his first publication, a work that greatly influenced contemporary philosophy, both in Europe and beyond, and was read by the greatest philosophers of the era, e.g. Nietzsche. The German philosopher Richard Avenarius (1843-1896) is most famous for his formulation of the radical positivist doctrine of "empirical criticism" or "empirio-criticism". He was not only read and studied in France and Germany but also greatly influenced Russian philosophy; he and was severely criticized by Lenin in his Materialism and Empirio-criticism (1909). In his first publication "Philosophie als Denken der Welt gemäss dem Princip des kleinsten Kraftmasses", Avenarius states: "Doubt of the correctness of my way heretofore pursued was induced through the barrenness of theoretical idealism in the field of psychology; and yet cognition and experience should belong to this science as psychological ideas." In general he here argues that it is the task of philosophy to develop a natural concept of the world based on "pure experience" and the principle of "economic thought". "Nietzsche received Philosophie als Denken der Welt gemäss dem Princip des kleinsten Kraftmasses in 1876, "and we know that he read it for the first or second time in the winter of 1883-84. Nietzsche then excerpted and discussed this reading in several longer notes, and shortly thereafter he wrote to Overbeck on April 7, 1884, stating that he needed to revise his views on epistemology and metaphysics. It is thus possible that this reading was of great importance for his thinking at the time. [...] section 14 and 15 of Beyond Good and Evil, with their critique of positivism and physiologist who emphasized the "smallest possible effort", were written in response to Nietzsche´s reading of Avenarius." (Brobjer Thomas H., Nietzsche's Philosophical Context, University of Illinois Press 2008, 93 pp.)

CAYLEY, ARTHUR. - THE CAYLEY-HAMILTON THEOREM ANNOUNCED - THE MATHEMATICS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42295
(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1858 and Taylor and Francis, 1866. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" Vol. 148 - Part I. Pp. 17-37, and Vol. 156 - Part I, Pp. 25-35. Clean and fine. First appearance of this outstanding contribution to mathematics, announcing his invention and developments of the ALGEBRA OF MATRICES, what is now called the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for square matrices of any order. "The subject originated in a memoir of 1858 (the paper offered) and grew directly out of simple observations on the way in which the transformations (linear) of the theory of algebraic invariants are combined...a distinctive feature of these rules is that multiplication is not commutative...we get different results according to the order in which we do the multiplication... (it) seems about as far from anything of scientific or practical use as anything could possible be. Yet sixty seven years after Cayley's invented it, HEISENBERG in 1925 recognized in the algebra of matrices exactly the tool which he neede for his revolutionary work in QUANTUM MECHANICS."(Bell, Men of Mathematics)."It was in connection with the study of invariants under linear transformation that Cayley first introduced matrices to simplify the notation involved. Here he gave some basic notions. This was followed by his first major paper on the subject "A Memoir on the Theory of Matrices.", the paper offered here. (Kline, Mathematical Thought...p. 806).

(No place, nor printer), 1753 & Paris, Aux depens de la Societe, 1755. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with four raised bands with gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Traces from old paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities, boards with scratches. Previous owner's name in contemporary hand to title-page. Internally nice and clean. [Academie... :] XVI, 142 pp. [Lettre d'un Inconnu... :] 44 pp. Rare first edition of this work related to the 'König affair,' the renowned controversy over the principle of least action, described as "perhaps the ugliest of all the famous scientific disputes" (DSB VII: 442). The main figures in this highly publicized affair, which led to numerous pamphlets supporting one side or the other, were the mathematicians and scientists P. L. Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759), then head of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, and Johann Samuel Koenig (1712-1757), a member of this Academy. In 1751 Koenig presented his "Law of least Action". The law states that the kinetic energy of a system of mass points is equal to the sum of the kinetic energy of the motion of the system relative to the center of gravity and of the kinetic energy of the total mass of the system considered as a whole, which moves as the center of gravity of the system. "While still in Franeker, Koenig wrote the draft of his important essay on the principle of least action, which was directed against Maupertuis. The controversy touched off by this work, which was published in March 1751, resulted in perhaps the ugliest of all the famous scientific disputes. Its principal figures were Koenig, Maupertuis, Euler, Frederick II, and Voltaire; and, as is well known, it left an unseemly stain on Euler’s otherwise untarnished escutcheon. The quarrel occupied Koenig’s last years almost completely; moreover, he had been ill for several years before it started. Koenig emerged the moral victor from this affair, in which all the great scientists of Europe—except Maupertuis and Euler—were on his side. The later finding of Kabitz testifies to Koenig’s irreproachable character."(DSB).

One of the earliest atlases dedicated to climatic change related to human activity. Published by World Meteorological Organization with text in English, French and Russian. “The problem of climatic impact on the various aspects of human activity has been attracting increasing attention all over the world in recent years on the part of the public as well as governments and their planning bodies. International organizations and various scientific bodies are also giving this problem more and more attention. […]For the first time in world climatic mapping practice, detailed isoline maps are being presented for the mountainous area in the Asian region, which is the dominant form of underlying surface here. […]It is hoped that the contents of this Atlas will be of use to the countries in Asia, in particular, to those which have not yet prepared their national climatic maps, as these countries may use the regional climatic maps temperature and precipitation as a basis to meet some of their national requirements.” (From the Foreword)

London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1810 a. 1811. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1810 - Part I. Pp. 231-257 and 1811 - Part I. Pp. 1-35. Both papers clean and fine. With titlepages to 1810, Part I and 1811, Part I. Titlepage to 1810 with a brownspot to upper inner margin. First appearance of these importent papers in the history of chemistry in which Davy announces his proofs of the elementary nature of clorine, describing the preparation, physical and chemical properties of a new gas, which he called 'euchlorine'. It is unstable and explodes on heating to give chlorine and oxygen. Davy here suggested the name 'chlorine', from a greek work for green, because of the greenish colour of the gas.Thorpe said of this first paper "As a piece of induction, the memoir is a model of its kind, and as an exercise in "the scientific use of ofthe imagination" it has few equals."Davy's researches on chlorine are of an importence comparable with those on the alkali metals. Chlorine, first discovered by Scheele, was regarded by him as a *dephlogisticated muriatic acid". As phlogiston was practically synonymous with with hydrogen to Scheele, this view was essentialy correct. Lavoisier, however, chiefly occupied with phenomena of combustion, assumed that chlorien was an oxide of an unknown "radical". Davy performed many experiments endeavouring to confirm the presence of oxygen and finally concluded that chlorine was an element."(A Source Book in Chemistry 1400-1900, p. 244).
