CAVALCANTI, BARTOLOMEO. - AN AMAZINGLY SUCCESSFUL RETORICA.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45366
Pesaro, Bartolomeo Cesano, 1559. 4to. Bound in a bit later full vellum with titlelabel in brown leather on spine with gilt lettering. (12),563 pp. Printers woodcut device on titlepage. With 7 large woodcut initials. The first 5 leaves with a few contemporary notes and underlinings. A fine clean copy. There were printed 2 editions the same year, one in Pesaro (the item offered) and one in Venice.Cavalcanti (1503-62) was a Florentine scholar-diplomat who served the Republic (1527-30), went into exile (1537), and spent his remaining years working for the Este and Farnese families. He died in poverty in Padua . His works reflect his interest in politics and scholarship: an oration to the Florentine militia (1530), political memoranda, diplomatic letters, translations from Polybius, essays on classical political thought (1571), and an amazingly successful Retorica (ten editions from 1559 to1585). The last, a comprehensive compendium of classical rhetoric written in Italian with Italian examples, maintains that the function of rhetoric is civic and practical rather than literary.Adams C 1176.

CURIE, IRÈNE et M.F. JOLIOT. - ANNOUNCING THE DISCOVERY OF ARTIFICIAL RADIOACTIVITY - NOBEL PRIZE PAPER OF 1935.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47071
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1934. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 198 No 3. Titlepage to vol. 198. Pp. (213-) 292. (Entire issue offered). The joint paper: pp. 254-256 a. 1 photographic illustration in the text. Titlepage with a stamp on verso, 2 small tears and a tiny bit of upper right corner gone. Titlepage a bit browned. First appearance of this seminal paper in which artificial radioactivity was announced for the first time. Curie and Joliot were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1935 "in recognition of their synthesis of new radioactive elements"."Until this date (1934), atomic nuclei emitting radiation were found in nature: it was called the natural radioactivity. It had been known since Rutherford that this natural radioactivity changed a nucleus into an other one: for instance radium becomes finally lead after many radioactive decays. We could say that lead does not become gold but gold becomes lead! But... this change of matter was not under control. It was not possible to construct the desired chemical element as the alchemist dreamed... But Irene and Frederic Joliot-Curie, made the dream become almost reality.""Another very important development in the early 1934 by the Joliot-Curies in connection with irradiation of aluminum by alpha particles. The two French scientists detected the production of the recently discovered positrons. [...] However, they soon realized that the positron activity continued after the alpha source was removed and that they had, in fact, discovered positive beta radioactivity. The importance of the discovery of artificial radioactivity was immediately recognized and resulted in a Nobel Prize in chemistry to the Joliot-Curies in 1935. The new phenomenon immediately became widely employed in nuclear physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine." (Kragh, Quantum Generations, p. 187)"These elegant experiments, which provided the first chemical proof of induced transmutations and showed the possibility of artificially creating radioisotopes of known stable elements, were repeated and extended in the major nuclear physics laboratories of various countries " (DSB).Born on 12 September 1897 in Paris, Irène Curie was the daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie. "During World War I, she worked as a nurse, helping her mother operate radiography equipment, and then studied physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne, gaining a doctorate for studying the range of alpha particles. She then went to work for her mother at the Radium Institute. There she met Frédéric Joliot whom she married in 1926. Frédéric Joliot was born on 19 March 1900 in Paris - He joined the Radium Institute in 1925 and obtained his PhD in 1930. Together the Joliot-Curies worked on radioactivity and the transmutation of the elements. Twice they just missed major discoveries: in 1932 when Chadwick beat them to the neutron, and in 1933 when Anderson discovered the positron. However, in 1934, whilst bombarding light elements with alpha particles, the Joliot-Curies noticed that, although proton production stopped when the alpha particle bombardment stopped, another form of radiation continued. The alpha particles had produced an isotope of phosphorus not found in nature. This isotope was radioactive and was decaying through beta-decay" (DSB).

FRANKLAND, E. (EDWARD). - INTRODUCING "VALENCY" IN CHEMISTRY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42941
London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1852 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1852 - Part II. With titlepage to Part II., pp. 417-444, textillustr. Fine and clean. First appearance of an extremely importent paper in the histroy of chemistry as Frankland here introduced the concept of 'VALENCY' - he called it 'atomicity' - to explain the capacity of atoms to combine with other atoms. "This led not only to the Kekulé structures, but also to the periodic table of Mendeléev, since that table was based on the regular change of valence with atomic weight."(Asimov)."On May 10 1852 Frankland read to the Royal Society a paper on organic metallic compounds (the paper offered) in which he made the emperical observation that elements possessed fixed combining powers, or "only room, so to speak, for the attachement of a fixed and definite number of the atoms of other elements." The expression "valence" or "Valency" began to be used by other chemists only after 1865, wheras Frankland tended to use the misleading term "atomicity"....Frankland's teching position at the Royal College of Chemistry and his influence on the Department of Sciences and Art science examinations enembled him to spread the idea through the younger generation of British chemists."(DSB V, p. 126).The exact inception, however, of the theory of chemical valencies can be traced to an 1852 paper by Edward Frankland, in which he combined the older theories of free radicals and "type theory" with thoughts on chemical affinity to show that certain elements have the tendency to combine with other elements to form compounds containing 3, i.e. in the three atom groups (e.g. NO3, NH3, NI3, etc.) or 5, i.e. in the five atom groups (e.g. NO5, NH4O, PO5, etc.), equivalents of the attached elements. It is in this manner, according to Frankland, that their affinities are best satisfied. (Wikepedia).

(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1769). 4to. No wrappers as issued in "Memoires de L'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres", tome XXIII, pp. 165-310. Clean and fine. First edition of a fundamental paper in the Theory of Numbers in which Lagrange gives a solution in integers of indeterminate equations of the second degree - a remarkable turning point in Diophantine analysis. - Fermat had asserted that he could determine when the more general equation x2-Ay2=B was solvable in integers and that he could solve it when solvable, but Lagrange solved it in this paper and furthermore he gives the complete solution to the problem of giving all integral solutions of a general equation where the coefficients are integers. - Cajori calls Lagrange "One of the greatest mathematicians of all times." - Poggendorff I:1344.

Arago and Fresnel's paper: pp. 288-306. First appearance of this seminal paper in which Arago and Fresnel described the experiments which demonstrated that light vibrates transversely to its direction of forward movement."In a further letter to Arago, dated 29 April 1818 Young recurred to the subject of transverse vibrations, comparing light to the undulations of a cord agitated by one of its extremities. This letter was shown by Arago to Fresnel, who at once saw that it presented the true explanation of the non-interference of beams polarised in perpendicular planes, and that the latter effect could even be made the basis of a proof of the correctness of Young's hypothesis; for if the vibration of each beam be supposed resolved into three components, one along the ray and the other two at right angles to it, it is obvious from the Arago-Fresnel experiment that the components in the direction of the ray must vanish; in other words THAT THE VIBRATIONS WHICH CONSTITUTE LIGHT ARE EXECUTED IN THE WAVE-FRONT." Leather with a few holes, primarily affecting back board, showing the wooden boards underneath. Previous owner's names in contemporary hand to title-page. Small worm-tract throughout, otherwise internally nice and clean. We have only been able to trace two copies at OCLC and one auction-record. “Although somewhat forgotten today, Franciscus Ridderus (1620-1683) was one of the most prolific and best-loved authors of the Further Reformation. His years as a preacher in Rotterdam (1656-83) were particularly important, a time in which he made his name as an erudite author and cleric with Orange sympathies. In 1665, the time of ‘true freedom’, his efforts on behalf of the Prince brought him into conflict with the city authorities after he had criticized the existing political situation and testified to his support for the later William the Third.” (Noak, Foreign Wisdom: Ethnological Knowledge in the Work of Franciscus Ridderus)

Milano, Boniardi-Pogliani, 1841-45. 8vo. All 11 parts uncut and in the original printed yellow wrappers. A few repairs and minor loss to a few spines, but all in all an excellent, very well preserved set, apart from vol II, fasc. V, in uncut condition and in the rare and fragile original wrappers, as this great work was originally issued. Part V of vol. II has some heavy dampstaining to the front wrapper, whcih thus has a lot of soiling, loss and repair. The front wrapper has been re-enforced with thin paper from verso. The first portion of leaves has some damstaining as well, but only in the beginning. All other parts just have very minor, light, scattered browning internally and some wrappers have a bit of brownspotting. Contemporary owner's name to first title-page (Dr. Professor of Philosophy, Cavallera). 802, (2 - errata); (4), 998, (2, - errata) pp. + final blank. The rare first printing of this monumental and highly influential treatise, in as original condition as possible - i.e. in the original eleven parts, as it first appeared, all with the original printed wrappers, and all uncut. It is in the present work that Rosmini presents his fundamental notion of the three societies that are necessary for the full development of the human race. While considering philosophy of law as a science of law, Rosmini here relates law to ethics and happiness and considers how it can be united with the moral creed of man as well as with man's natural urge for happiness. The science of rational right arises from the protection which the moral law affords to the useful good. The ideas of ownership and rights that are governing in our relations to other people are based on freedom and property. In private property Rosmini identifies the foundation of legal liberty and from this legal liberty comes all other laws, specific, individual and social. The work became hugely influential, not only in Europe, but throughout all of Europe, not least Germany. It was of immediate impact, and especially the liberals embraced it warmly. The work is considered one of Rosmini's main works and probably the most influential. It furthermore served as a basis for many of Rosmini's later works, which also became quite influential.Antonio Rosmini Serbati (1797-1855)was a famous was Italian Roman Catholic priest and philosopher. He belonged to a noble family, and after having studied at Pavia and Padua, he was ordained priest in 1821. In 1848 Rosmini was invited to serve in the Roman Curia of Pius IX as prime minister of the Papal States. He contributed substantially to many political and religious debates and was an important character in 19th century Italy, most notably in the struggle for Italy's emancipation from Austria. In fact, according to the Italian Printing and the Mind of Man, "Rosmini was, together with V. Gioberti, the most influential thinker during the "heroical" period of the Italian Risorgimento. In 2007 the Catholic church decided to beatify him." (own translation from Italian). Rosmini was eager for the deliverance if Italy from Austria, but his main aim was for the country to become a confederation of states under papal control. Rosmini is furthermore the founder of a new religious community, the Institute of Charity (1828), since then generally known by his name, Rosminians. Rsomini's opinions and works were met with great opposition, especially among the Jesuits, and several of his works were placed on the Index. Govi, I Classici che hanno fatto l'Italia, nr. 306.

Scarce fourth German edition. The first part of the book deals with the generation of metals...the second with the extraction of silver by mercury. He cites alchemical literature on the origin of the earth, minerals, salts, adding clear descriptions. He excelled in the "Treatment of silver ores by amalgation, using processes that he himself had discovered and that were in large measure responsible for the wealth of the province." (DSB)."Barba was a native of the village of Lepe in Andalusia. He entered the church and became pastor of St. bernards at Potosi, in South America. While there he had the opportunity of studying minerals and mining, extraction of silver and assaying, and became very skilful in these branches of science. He embodied his knowledge and experience in the treatise "El arte de los metallos", published in Madrid in 1640 in 4to, with illustrations. It was kept as secret as possible by the Spaniards, but when Edw. Montagu, Earl of Sandwich, was ambassador extraordinary to Spain, he obtained a copy and translated two of the five books into English in 1669. The first book appeared at London in 1670, and the two together in 1674. Two German translations followed, one from the English, and long after, another from the French; and two in French from the Spanish." (Ferguson I: p.70-71). - Duveen p.42-43 (but not this edition). Light wear to extremities, but an overall nice and clean copy. (40), 539 pp. The two parts in continuous pagination. Second Elzevir-edition, the first being from 1641, of Philippe de Béthune’s famous and influential political treatise or manual which summarized in an easy accessible form most of the early 17th century political ideas. It was published a total of 5 times between 1632 and 1665. "Béthune's treatise was the work of a man at the end of his career who had served the monarchy at home and abroad through the bumpy years of dynastic transition and who, thanks to his longevity, had witnessed the crisis of the religious wars as well as France's slow rise from the ashes thereafter. He brought to bear his wide knowledge and experience of French government but also his thorough acquaintance with Rome and Italy, and both informed the political ideas he mobilised in his treatise" (Reinhardt, p. 56) Philippe de Béthune was a prominent figure in French politics during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He served as a diplomat and administrator under Henri III and Henri IV, with key roles in diplomatic missions to Scotland, Rome, and Savoy. Béthune's efforts aimed at securing peace in Italy and resolving conflicts between European powers. He remained influential in diplomatic circles, particularly under the guidance of Cardinal Richelieu. Béthune's political career was marked by his dedication to diplomacy and his efforts to navigate complex European relations during a tumultuous period. Kjøbenhavn, Reitzel, 1829. Small 8vo. Original blank wrappers.A few scattered brownspots, but a very good copy in completely original condition, as it was issued. First edition of Hans Cristian Andersen's third publication in book form and his first dramatic work. This seminal publication marked his stage-debut and was not only the first work that he wrote for the theatre, but also the first of his works that was performed on the stage. It is with the present work, "Love in Nicolai Tower" that Hans Christian Andersen inaugurated his dramatical production, a genre that came to define much of his literary production for the next forty years, over the cause of which he produced about as many plays - i.e. ab. 40. The question as to acceptance from the theatre and the the set-up of the plays, however, -especially at the beginning of his career - would often postpone the actual theatre debut by many months, sometimes years. Thus, many of his early plays were only performed on the stage much later. "Kjærlighed on Nicolai Taarn", however, was accepted almost immediately and was performed already the following year, marking his theatre debut.
