First French translation of Adam Brand’s ‘Relation du voyage’, an 18-month journey to Beijing where he served as the embassy’s secretary. In 1692, Tsar Peter the Great commissioned Eberhard Isbrand Ides to lead a mission to the Kangxi Emperor of China, with Adam Brand functioning as the embassy's secretary. The delegation, comprising over 250 individuals including noblemen, advisors, merchants, and soldiers, arrived in Beijing after an 18-month journey in 1693. The embassy's primary accomplishment was securing permission for Russians to conduct business in Beijing with a caravan of up to 200 members every three years. The present work became extremely popular in Western Europe and it was quickly translated into various European languages including English (1698 and 1707), French (1699), Dutch (1699) and Spanish (1701). Withbound is Prideaux' "La Vie de Mahomet".

DE VRIES, HUGO. - THE REDISCOVERY OF MENDEL'S LAWS - THE BIRTH OF MODERN GENETICS.

lyn48208
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1900. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 130, No 13. Titlepage to tome 130 a. pp. (809-) 864. (Entire issue offered). De Vries paper: pp. 845-847. Rather poor paperquality, fragile. Small nicks to margins of titlepage. First appearance of a milestone paper in genetics being the "REDISCOVERY" OF MENDEL'S LAWS OF HEREDITY" - This paper, together with the two other papers from the same year by Carl Correns and Erich Tschermak, laid the foundations of a new scientific discipline that, in 1906, was given the name "genetics", and less than a century later, rose to become the leading science in Western society. This French announcement was published 4 days before his longer paper "Das Spaltungsgesetzt der Hybride", in which Mendel is mentioned.De Vries completed most of his hybridization experiments without knowing about Mendel's work. Based on his own results, de Vries drew the same conclusions as Mendel. De Vries published his work in 1900, first in French then in German. In the French report there was no mention of Mendel, but this was amended by de Vries in the German paper. It is possible that de Vries read Mendel's paper before he published his own, and included Mendel's name in the later printing when he realized that other people also knew about Mendel's work. De Vries may have thought that his own conclusions were superior to Mendel's. "During the 1880s, de Vries became interested in heredity. In 1889 he published Intracellular Pangenesis, in which he critically reviewed previous research on inheritance and advanced the theory that elements in the nucleus, ‘pangenes’, determine hereditary traits. To investigate his theories, he began breeding plants in 1892 and by 1896 had obtained clear evidence for the segregation of characters in the offspring of crosses in 3:1 ratios. He delayed publishing these results, proposing to include them in a larger book, but in 1900 he came across the work of Gregor Mendel, published 34 years earlier, and announced his own findings. This stimulated both Karl Correns and Erich von Tschermak-Seysenegg to publish their essentially similar observations." (Oxford Dictionary of Scientists).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1900 B. - PMM 356 (the note).

Leipzig und Berlin, B.G. Teubner, 1913. Orig. green printed wrappers. Frontwrapper nearly loose but without loss. Backstrip faded. Very small nicks to spineends. IX,(1),169,(1) pp. + Publishers catalogue. Textillustrations. Internally clean and fine. Scarce first edition. As privatdozent Hermann Weyl had given a course on Riemann's theory of functions; but instead of following his predecessors in their constant appeal to intuition for the definition and properties of Riemann surfaces, he set out to give to their theory the same kind of axiomatic and rigorous treatment that Hilbert had given to Euclidean geometry. Using Hilbert's idea of defining neighborhoods by a system of axioms, and influenced by Brouwer's clever application of Poincare's simplicial methods (which had just been published), he gave the first rigorous definition of a complex manifold of dimension 1 and a throughout treatment (without any appeal to intuition) of all the questions regarding orientation, homology, and fundamental groups of these manifolds. "Die Idee der Riemannschen Fläche" (1913) immediately became a classic and inspired all later developments of the theory of differential and complex manifolds.(J.Dieudonne in DSB).

Front free end-paper in vol. 1 with repair and the large folded general map of the country (erroneously called for in vol. 2) reinforced in margin and with two small tears. XXX, 395; IX, 384 pp. + double-portrait frontispiece in volume 1, lithograph frontispiece in volume 2, 2 maps (1 large folding), 13 full-page plates, 20 illustrations in text. First edition of Baker's famous account of his discovery of the last great source of the Nile, Speke and Grant having established Lake Victoria Nyanza as the source of the White Nile and Bruce discovering the source of the Blue. The present work constitute one of the great travel narratives on African exploration. “First published in two illustrated volumes in 1866, this account of his most celebrated expedition is amongst the most important works of its type. Baker promises 'to take the reader by the hand, and lead him step by step … through scorching deserts and thirsty sands; through swamp and jungle … until I bring him, faint with the wearying journey, to that high cliff … from which he shall look down upon the vast Albert Lake and drink with me from the sources of the Nile!' Volume 2 finds Baker a prisoner of a native king. Baker offers a number of 'gifts' to buy his release, and after an arduous journey, with his wife in a coma, in March 1864 he reaches Luta N'zige, which he renames in memory of Prince Albert. A compelling account of an historic adventure.” (Editor’s note to the facsimile reprint published by Cambridge University Press (2011)) Czech (Africa) p.10 Hilmy I p.50

Amsterdam, Changuion, 1735. 8vo. In contemporary full sprinkled calf with five raised bands with richly gilt spine. Gilt frame to boards and edges of boards gilt. Small paper label pasted on to upper compartment of spine. Extremities with wear, boards with scratches and missing small part of the leather. Internally very fine and clean. (14), 251 pp. This unoffical second edition was published the year after the first edition (1734) and a year before the official second edition (published in 1736). Here Melon discusses various economic principles and policies, focusing on the role of commerce and trade in the prosperity of nations: “"His Essai' is noteworthy not only because it constitutes the first systematic presentation of mercantilist doctrines to appear in France but also because it adumbrates the transition to physiocracy" (ESS X, 305). Melon's "Essai politique sur le commerce" is considered a significant work in the history of economic thought, particularly for its advocacy of free trade and its insights into the functioning of markets. It contributed to the development of liberal economic ideas that would later influence thinkers such as Adam Smith and the classical economists.
