First English edition of this highly important work - "Viaggi alle due Sicilie ed in alcune parti dell'Appenino" (1792-97) - on Vulcanology in Italy and Sicily, by the great Italian biologist and physiologist. Spallanzani was one of the first to reject spontaneous generation with arguments similar to those expressed by Pasteur nearly a century later. In 1788 Spallanzani travelled in the Two Sicilies, mainly in order to correct deficiencies in the vulcanic collection of the Museum of Natural History in Modena. Southern Italy had suffered for five years from intense eruptive and seismic activities. Messina was still in ruins and the countryside devastated. Vesuvius, near Naples, Stromboli and Vucano on the Eolian Isles, and Etna on the Island of Sicily, remained active. Spallanzani visited them all, undauntedly making several perilous ascents that involved great physical endurance. As such he became one of the founders of Vulcanology."Spallanzani (1729-1799), the illustrious professor of Pavia, Reggio, and Modena,...devoted his earlier life to animal and vegetable physiology, and was fifty years of age before he began to turn his attention to geological questions. But from that period onward he made many journeys in the basin of the Mediterranean from Constantinople to Marseilles. Of special interest were his minute and picturesque descriptions of the eruptions of Stromboli, which at not a little personal risk he watched from a crevice in the lava. His "Travels in the Two Sicilies and in some Parts of the Appennines" contained a mass of careful observations among the recent and extinct volcanoes of Italy." First appearance of an importent paper in which Gauss introduced a new method in the calculus of variations and a mathematical treatment of forces of attraction.Gauss had worked on physics already before 1831, publishing "Uber ein neues allgemeines Grundgesetz der Mechanik" , which contained the principle of least constraint, and "Principia generalia theoriae figurae fluidorum in statu aequilibrii" which discussed forces of attraction. These papers were based on Gauss's potential theory, which proved of great importance in his work on physics. He later came to believe his potential theory and his method of least squares provided vital links between science and nature."In 1830 appeared Principia generalia theoriae figurae fluidorum in statu aequilibrii, his one contribution to capillarity and an important paper in the calculus of variations, since it was the first solution of a variational problem involving double integrals, boundary conditions, and variable limits."(DSB).Dunnington, no. 95.- The memoir was reprinted in Ostwald's Klassiker No. 135.

Admiral John Byng (1704 - 1757) was a British naval officer court-martialed and executed in 1757 for failing to "do his utmost" in defending Menorca during the Seven Years' War. Though not guilty of cowardice, strict military law left no room for leniency, and he was sentenced to death to set an example. His trial and execution were widely seen as unjust and politically motivated, famously criticized by Voltaire in Candide. Biblioteca Danica II, 523.

Comenius’s simple encyclopedic format, consisting of keyed pictures with descriptive columns of bilingual text, reflects his progressive educational approach, as does the richly varied content” (Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Children’s Literature).The first edition was published in 1658.

Uncommon Jena-edition of Saavedra’s anti-Machiavellian emblem book, originally published in Spanish in 1640, containing a hundred short essays on the education of prices. Offering guidance on governance, diplomacy, and statecraft the work provides insights into political philosophy during the Baroque period. The format of the work, short essay each accompanied by beautiful illustrations, help popularize the work outside academic and scholarly circles and the work became immensely popular with numerous edition and translations.

First appearance of these fundamental paper in cosmology and physics as they contains the FIRST OBSERVATIONAL DATA TO SUPPORT THAT NEWTON'S DYNAMICAL LAWS HOLDS OUTSIDE THE SOLAR SYSTEM. Herschel shows here that the circulating motions of double-stars were under gravitational forces. Until then the validity of the law of gravity was only established within the solar system. Now, a century after the establishment of the law, it was traced out in the motion of incredibly distant stars and the theory first truly earned its title of Universal. The exact proof of the mutual gravitation of the double-stars was only obtained five years after Herschel's death, when the motions of the stars were more precisely dtermined.One of the most notable of Herschel's discoveries of double-stars, binary stars. A first cataloque of such pairs was published early in 1782 and contained 269, of which 227 were new discoveries. "Twenty years after the publication of his first cataloque Herschel was of Michell's opinion - Michell had expressed the opinion that the odds in favour of a physical relation between the members of Herschel's newly discovered double stars were "beyond arithmetic" - but was able to support it by evidence of an entirely novel and much more direct character. A series of observations of Castor, presented in two papers in the "Philosophical Transaction" in 1803 and 1804 (the paperS offered ), which were fortunately supplemented by an observation of Bradley's in 1759, had shewn a progressive alteration in the direction of the line joining its two components, of such a character as to leave no doubt that the two stars were revolving round one another; and there were five oher cases in which a similar motion was observed...it was shown that the double-star was really formed by a connected pair of stars near enough to influence one another's mortion."(Berry in "A Short History of Astronomy" pp. 342-43).

Schneider-Creusot, or Schneider et Cie, was a historic French iron and steel-mill which became a major arms manufacturer. After World War II, it evolved into Schneider Electric.

The uncommon reprint of the first part of Paulus Manutius' 1554 edition of Cicero's rhetorical works (Renouard 1554.12), containing three of his most important rhetorical treatises, De Inventione, Topica and Oratoriae Partitiones, as well as the Pseudo-Ciceronian Rhetorica ad Herennium. Cicero's rhetorical works, Rhetorica ad Herennium and De Inventione in particular, played an important role in teaching of rhetoric throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Paulus Manutius was one of the most prominent Ciceronian scholars of his time, and his editions, containing numerous original textual corrections a valuable contribution to Ciceronian scholarship. A faint dampstain to some leaves in inner margins, otherwise clean. Second Ferman edition. The first part deals mainly with the artillery and its technical aspects and the second part with fireworks.The Italian physician, alchemist and cartographer, Alexis of Piedmont or Girolamo Ruscelli, was born in Viterbo, Italy around 1500 (perhaps earlier), and died in Venice, Italy around 1565. He is (probably) the author of the important "Secreti", published in 1555, and the "Secreti Nuovi", published in 1567, the first of which was extremely popular and of considerable influence, the second of which must be said to be of the greatest interest, but apparently not very widely read. He also translated the Geography of Ptolemy into Italian, and his books on war and fire-works are now quite scarce. Most of his works were popular in his life-time and the century to come, and they were translated into Latin, German, French and Welsh. At a very early point he indicated the plan of a scientific academy, and he must be said to be a very interesting 16th century scientist. Cockle, 663.

Basedow’s views were based on the writings of men such as John Amos Comenius, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. His practical teaching methods were more expansive in their implications for education than those of any of his immediate predecessors in the field, and by the early 19th century they had become a fundamental force in Germany’s public school systems.Basedow blev i 1753 ansat af J.H.E. Bernstorff ved Sorø Akademi som professor i moral og de skønne videnskaber. Her kom han bl.a. i forbindelse med den danske oplysningsforfatter og Sorø-professor Jens Schielderup Sneedorff, hvis værker han oversatte til tysk. Senere fulldførte han uddannelsen ved Statens kunstakademi i Oslo, hvor han fik sin debut som maler 1940. "Som billedkunstner var Tore Hamsun først og fremst landskapsmaler, med en dempet, raffinert fargeskala, påvirket bl.a. av fransk impresjonisme. Han er representert i Nasjonalgalleriet og i Nationalmuseum i Stockholm. Hans virke som billedkunstner ble imidlertid i mange år sterkt forstyrret av hans rolle som Hamsun-biograf og som familiens talsmann i norske medier." (Norsk biografisk lexicon). Det er først i nyere tid, at man rigtig er begyndt at værdsætte Tore Hamsuns kunstneriske evner, da han i årtier har lidt under familiens og hans egne Nazi-sympatier. Inden for de seneste år er man dog begyndt at anerkende Tore Hamsun som en særdeles begavet kunstner, hvis værker indgår i de store skandinaviske malerisamlinger.

First German edition of Faraday's famous paper "On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism. By Michael Faraday, Chemical Assistant in the Royal Institution. (1821)", recording one of the most influential discoveries in physics in the 19th Century, as Faraday here, as the very first, showed how to CONVERT THE ELECTRICAL AND MAGNETIC FORCES INTO CONTINUAL MECHANICAL MOVEMENT, thus creating the first electric motor, using the principle of electromagnetic rotation. In the first paper he introduced for the first time the concept of "LINE OF FORCE" and hereby deliniating "a picture of the universe as consisting of fields of various types, one that was more subtle, flexible, and useful than the purely mechanical picture of Galileo and Newton. The FIELD UNIVERSE was to be recognized with Maxwell half a century later and with Einstein, after an interval of another halfcentury."(Asimov)."Ever since Hans Christian oersted's announcement of the discovery of electromagnetism in the summer of 1820, editors of scientific journals had been inundated with articles on the phenomenon. Theories to explain it had multiplied, and the net effect was confusion. Were all the effects reported real ? Did the theories fit the facts ? It was to answer these questions that Phillips turned to Faraday and asked him to review the experiments and theories of the past months and separate truth from fiction,...Faraday agreed to to undertake a short historical survey...His entusiasm was aroused in September 1821, when he turned to the investigation of the peculiar nature of the magnetic force created by an electrical current. Oersted had spoken of the "electrical conflict" surrounding the wiree and had noted that "this conflict performs circles".....Yet as he experimented he saw precisely what was happening. Using a small magnetic needle to map the pattern of magnetic force, he noted that oneof the poles of the needle turned in a circle as it was carried around the wire. He immediately realized that a single magnetic pole would rotate unceasingly around a current-carrying wire so long as the current flowed. He then set about devising an instrument to illustrate this effect. His paper "On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism" appeared in the 21 October 1821 issue of the "Quarterly Journal of Science" (The paper offered in the first German edition).
