First edition of a fundamental work in Meteorology in which Saussure describes how to construct a hygrometer from human hair that can measure the relative humidity, and discussing the principles behind it. Cuvier regarded this book as one of the greatest contributions to science of the eighteenth century."A milestone work in chemistry, physics, and meteorology, which established hygrometry as an exact science. Primarely a geologist who explored and published on the Alps, Saussure (1740-1788) was the first to prove that air expands and becomes less dense the more humidity it contains. In these Essais (the work offered) he describes his experiments with the hair hygrometer of his invention and his theory of the evaporation and hygrometry with their applications to meteorology. he also enunciates his theory of the evaporation of water in hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and other gases."(Neville II, p. 427 a)."In his essay on the theoretical principles of hygrometry (which he conceives as "the art of measuring the absolute quantity of water suspended in the air"), De Saussure distinguishes three classes of methods of determining humidity, which respectively utilize (i) observations of changes in the weight, dimensions, or shape, of a hygroscopic body; (ii) observations of the capacity of the air for taking up water; and (iii) observations of the quantity of water condensing from the air under given conditions on a cold surface, or of the degree of cold necessary to start such an condensation..."(Wolf "A History of Science , Technology, & Philosophy in the 18th Century" I, p. 326 ff.).Partington III, 763. - Partington "Breakthroughs" 1783 M - Poggendorff II, 755-56.

(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1857). Without wrappers in "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Vierte Reihe Bd.10, Stück 3 (= Poggendorff Bd. 100, No. 3). Pp. 353-480 a. 1 plates (the entire "Heft" (Stück) 3 offered). Clausius's paper: pp. 353-380. Clean and fine. First printing of a milestone paper in the Kinetic Theory of Gases in which Clausius gives the physical explanation for the evaporation of a liquid and presents the first physical argument in support of Avogadro's hypothesis that equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules."In the paper "Ueber die Art der Bewegung, welche wir Wärme nennen.", Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888) established mathematically that the heat in a gas cannot be accounted for exclusively by translational motion of the molecules and asserts that molecules have rotational and vibratiional motion as well as translational motion. He consequently rejects the contentions the the translational kinetic energy is conserved during molecular collisions and that all molecules have equal, constant velocities. His allowancee for differing molecule velocities enables him to offer a new explanation of evaporation, asserting that he molecules able to overcome the attractive forces of the liquid and "escape" to the gaseous state are those with high velocities (and hence high kinetic energies). hence evaporation produces a loss of energy in the liquid and a decreasein temperature."(Parkinson in "Breakthroughs", 1857 C/P)."This 1857 paper (the paper offered) also marked another importent beginning in physical theory, for it presented the first physical argument in support of Avogadro's hypothesis that equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules. Clausius argued that if it were assumed that all types of molecules possess the same translational energy at equal temperatures, then, since all gases have the same relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature, they would necessartly contain equal numbers of molecules in equal volumes at the same temperatur and pressure. Avogadro's hypothesis, therefore, found support in the mechanical theory of heat, independently of the usual chemical arguments."(DSB III, p. 307).

London, Macmillan & Co., 1932. 8vo. Orig. full brown cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Orig. brown dust-jacket w. wear and a bit of loss to corners and capitals. Otherwise and excellent and clean copy w. only some occasinal minor brownspotting. XIV, 247 pp. First edition of this standard work on wages, Hicks' first major work, in which he proposed the macroeconomic hypothesis about INDUCED INNOVATION and foreshadowed important later developments in neoclassical distribution theory. Sir John Richard Hicks (1904 - 1989) was one of the most important and influential economists of the twentieth century. He has contributed seminally to both micro- and macro-economics and in 1972 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences together with Kenneth Arrow for "pioneering contributions to general economic equilibrium theory and welfare theory."As a labor economist, Hicks already in 1932, aged 28, wrote his first major work, his very important "Theory of Wages", which serves as a fundamental basis for recent theories of distribution, now widely developed in e.g. Cambridge. Hick's early work is still considered standard in the field, and a vast amount of literature has been published on his hypothesis of induced innovation, which is presented in this work for the first time. The theory is formulated as thus: "a change in the relative prices of the factors of production is itself a spur to invention, and to invention of a particular kind-directed to economizing the use of a factor which has become relatively expensive." And this theory has also frequently been applied to increases in energy costs, which would thus come to motivate a quicker improvement in energy efficiency. But not only did Hicks here propound the still influential theory of induced innovation, this work is also considered as foreshadowing many of his later theories, which have become significant contributions to neoclassical distribution theory; e.g. a reformulation of marginal productivity theory, further development of the product exhaustion theorem, a macroeconomic theory of relative factor shares etc., etc. "The object of this book is "a restatement of the Theory of Wages in a form which shall be reasonably abreast of modern economic knowledge." The treatment is based on the Marginal Productivity theory, although that theory is stated in a rather new way, designed to facilitate its use in realistic study of the labour market. This is followed by a more general study of the working of the labour market under competitive conditions, and by a theory of the secular forces governing the general level of wages. The second part of the book deals with the regulation of wages. There is a chapter on the Theory of Industrial Disputes, and one on the economic forces which have facilitated the Growth of Trade Union Power in England. The last chapters contain a detailed analysis of the effects of wage-regulation on unemployment, including the distribution of unemployment between industries, and the prospects of a reduction in unemployment through an increase in productivity." (Front of dust-jacket).A second edition appeared in 1963.The work is scarce in the original dust-jacket.

London, 1664. 8vo. In contemporary full calf. Light wear to extremities. Small paper-label pasted on to upper part of spine. Innter hinges split. Previous owner's name to title-page. Light browning throughout. (16), 400 pp. (numerous errors in pagination but total number of pages is still 400 - complete). Rare later edition of Alleine’s influential 'Vindiciae Pietatis', first published four years earlier in 1660. All editions are of the utmost scarcity. Richard Alleine was a 17th-century English Puritan preacher and author. He is primarily known for his religious writings and sermons, which were influential during the Puritan movement in England. Alleine was associated with the Puritan emphasis on personal piety, conversion, and religious devotion. “Richard was educated at St Alban’s Hall, Oxford, where he was entered commoner in 1627, and whence, having taken the degree of B.A., he transferred himself to New Inn, continuing there until he proceeded M.A. On being ordained he became assistant to his father, and immediately stirred the entire county by his burning eloquence. In March 1641 he succeeded the many-sided Richard Bernard as rector of Batcomb (Somerset). He declared himself on the side of the Puritans by subscribing “The testimony of the ministers in Somersetshire to the truth of Jesus Christ” and “The Solemn League and Covenant,” and assisted the commissioners of the parliament in their work of ejecting unsatisfactory ministers. Alleine continued for twenty years rector of Batcomb and was one of the two thousand ministers ejected in 1662. The Five Mile Act drove him to Frome Selwood, and in that neighbourhood he preached until his death on the 22nd of December 1681. His works are all of a deeply spiritual character. His Vindiciae Pietatis (which first appeared in 1660) was refused licence by Archbishop Sheldon, and was published, in common with other nonconformist books, without it. It was rapidly bought up and “did much to mend this bad world.” Roger Norton, the king’s printer, caused a large part of the first impression to be seized on the ground of its not being licensed and to be sent to the royal kitchen. Glancing over its pages, however, it seemed to him a sin that a book so holy—and so saleable—should be destroyed. He therefore bought back the sheets, says Calamy, for an old song, bound them and sold them in his own shop. This in turn was complained of, and he had to beg pardon on his knees before the council-table; and the remaining copies were sentenced to be “bisked,” or rubbed over with an inky brush, and sent back to the kitchen for lighting fires. Such “bisked” copies occasionally occur still. The book was not killed. It was often reissued with additions, The Godly Man’s Portion in 1663, Heaven Opened in 1666, The World Conquered in 1668. He also published a book of sermons. Godly Fear, in 1664, and other less noticeable devotional compilations.” (Encyclopedia Britannica). OCLC only list one copy (with the 400 pp.).

There is no eloquence in it, but a serious, earnest desire is manifest to keep back nothing of the counsel of God ; and we are much mistaken if ministers do not find it profitable, as suggestive of many hints which may enrich their own expositions of this Epistle.” (From the introduction to the 1849 reprint).
