All clean and fine. First appearance of the founding papers of modern mathematical statistics, out of which grew Pearson's creation of Biometrics."Founder of biometrics, Karl Pearson was one of the principal architects of the modern mathematical statistics. He was a polymath whose interests ranges from astronomy, mechanics, meteorology and physics, to biological sciences in particular, including...eugenics, evolotionary biology,heredity......Largly owing to his interests in evolutionary biology, Person created, almost single-handedly, the modern theory of statistics in his Biometric School at University College London.... In his creation of biometrics, out of which the discipline of mathematical statistics had develoiped by the end of the nineteenth century, Person introduced a new vernacular for statistics (including such termss as the standard deviation, mode, homoscedasticity, heteroscedasticity, kurtosis and the producct-moment correlation coefficient." (Heyde in Statisticians of the Centuries). In the first paper offered here Person introduced the method of moments as a mean curve fitting assymetrical distributions ("point-binominals") and he applies the theory to crabs and prawns. This is a general method for determining the values of the parameters of a frequency distribution. In the second paper offered here, Pearson develpoed the general formula to use for subsets of six types of frequency curves, now known as "Pearson Type Curves".In his seminal paper "Regressin, Heredity and Panmixia", the third papers offered here, Pearson introduced matrix algebra into statistical theory and also introducing 'eta' as a measure for curvilinear relationship, the standard error of an estimate, multiple regression and multiple and partial correlation, and devises the coefficient of variation as a measure of the ratio of a standard deviation to the corresponding mean expressed as a percentage. In the fourth paper he deals with the theory of probable erros and of correlations of errors...In the fifth paper he deals with the theory as involving multiple correlations...stature in biology is shown to be best reconstructed from measurements of long bones. The last paper offered deals with a variety of biological correlations, inheritance of characters etc. etc.G.M. ZEEMAN, P.

London, Macmillan & Co, 1896-97. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 55, November 1896 - April 1897. Bookplates to front free end-papers and library stamp to title page. Minor wear to extremities, otherwise very fine and clean. P. 347. [Entire volume: XL, 624 pp.]. First English edition of this landmark paper in which the Zeeman-effect was first announced. It is one of the most important and influential discoveries made in the later half of the 19th century. "The Zeemann effect not only opened a new world of facts which interest the physicist, the chemist, and even the astronomer, but the study also contributed - to an extent much greater than the study of the Stark effect - to the conceptual development of quantum theory" (Jammer). Together with Lorenz, Zeeman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for "the extraordinary service they rendered by their researches into the influence of magnetism upon radiation phenomena". "The last experiment performed by Michael Faraday was an unsuccessful attempt to observe the influence of a magnetic field on the spectral lines of sodium. More than 30 years later, Pieter Zeeman took up the challenge and observed a broadening of the lines, which was soon recognized to be the splitting that we know as the Zeeman effect. Zeeman's account of the discovery, translated for Nature from the Proceedings of the Physical Society of Berlin, includes an interpretation based on Hendrik Lorentz's idea of "small molecular elements charged with electricity", and a rough calculation of the charge to mass ratio of these "ions"." (Nature Physics Portal)."Zeeman is best remembered for his observations in 1896 of the mageto-optic phenomenon that almost immediately was named the Zeeman effect. His experimental discovery was not fortuitous, but the fruition of theoretical views that had motivated attempts over a span of thirty-five years to detect some such interaction between magnetism and light. Zeeman's initial observations were beautifully comprehended by H.A.Lorentz' electromagnetic theory, which also served to guide Zeeman in the very early refinement and extension of his discovery. As a result Zeeman and Lorentz shared the 1902 Nobel Prize for physics in recognition of their accomplishment and of the promise, since overwhelmingly fulfilled, of the Zeeman effect for contributing to the understanding of spectra and the particulate structure of matter." York, Printed by A. Ward for J. Dodsley; T. Cadell; J. Robson; and T. Durham, London. W. Creech and J. Balfour, Edinburgh, 1776 Large4to. In contemporary full calf with black leather title-label with gilt lettering to spine. Gilt ornamentation to spine, forming 6 compartments. Front and back board loose. Overall wear and soiling to extremities. Two paper-labels with description of the work and two ex-libris [John Leigh Philips] pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Waterstain affecting first 8 leaves, otherwise internally fine. [2 blanks], Frontiespiece, (54), 649, (10), [2 blanks] pp. + 40 copper-engraved plates by Johann Sebastian Muller, including one folding. [Keynes Evelyn 47 (calling for 39 plates); Henrey 137 (calls for 40 plates); Nissen BBI 615 (calling for 41 plates though almost all copies have 40)]. First Hunter edition, sixth overall, of this landmark work on forestry, one of the most influential texts ever published on the subject. The work shaped both the knowledge and the landscape of an entire nation throughout centuries."There can be no doubt that John Evelyn, both during his own lifetime and throughout the two centuries which have elapsed since his death in 1706, has exerted more individual influence, through his charming "Sylva", ... than can be ascribed to any other individual." (Nisbet, in the preface to the 1908 reprint of the 1706-edition).Apart from its pivotal importance to forestry, reforestration, the history of planting in Europe and the direct benefits from that, the book is famously the first book to be printed by the Royal Society, which had been founded in 1664 (the second being Robert Hooke's "Microscopia"). The book was a huge success and it became immensely influential, making Evelyn famous among his contemporaries - such as Pepys, Hooke, and Locke - as a horticultural pioneer . "If you take a stroll through one of the nation's long-established woodlands, there is a good chance its management was inspired, influenced or even instructed by John Evelyn's Sylva.Widely recognised as the first comprehensive study of UK trees, Sylva, or - to give its full title - A Discourse of Forest Trees, and the Propagation of Timber in his Majesty's Dominions, made its first public appearance in 1662 as a paper submitted to the newly formed Royal Society. Two years later, it was published as the Royal Society's first book and went on to not only shape people's knowledge but the landscape itself. And it was an instant success, proving popular beyond its intended audience of wealthy aristocratic landowners, who were urged by Evelyn to plant trees in order to replenish the nation's depleted timber stock.Four editions were produced during Evelyn's lifetime, and the book is still widely quoted and remains in print and freely available online 350 years after its first publication....He designed his first garden when he was 22 years old, two decades before he penned Sylva. It was as a young man, after deciding fighting as a Royalist in the Civil War was not the best career choice, that he travelled across Europe and became fascinated by the formal gardens of France and the expansive grounds of Italy. On his return to England, he continued his work in the garden of his home at Sayes Court in Deptford, South-East London.Being located near the Royal Dockyard on the Thames allowed Evelyn to experiment with newly arrived botanical delights, testing how the flora fared in his English country garden. His attention to detail, and the careful recording of his observations reflected the appetite for empirical evidence among the early pioneers of modern science. "He was one of the early fellows of the Royal Society, which was created in 1660 as a scientific organisation, and Evelyn had spoken with the fellows about his work in this area and it very much chimed with the Society's early objectives," explained Royal Society head librarian Keith Moore. What we do now will have a knock-on effect for generations to come Dr Gabriel Hemery, The New Sylva co-author:"Quite clearly, Evelyn's work in planting forest trees and harvesting the products from them - whether it was wood or apples - really hit the mark; it was exactly what the Royal Society was interested in at that time."And so the seeds of Sylva's success were planted, as landowners heeded Evelyn's advice."Of course, you have to remember that this was after the Civil War so trees across the nation had been denuded as part of the war effort but, as Evelyn himself says in the book, as a result of industrial activities - such as glass making - people were chopping down trees, therefore they had to be replaced," he told BBC News. "Also, he uses the phrase 'wooden walls' - [trees] were very important for the defence of the nation through ship building."...The lasting legacy of Evelyn's vision to sustain the nation's timber supplies was highlighted in 1812 when the book was republished as a call to arms to the nation's landowners as the Napoleonic Wars took their toll on timber supplies. And there were echoes of Evelyn in 1919, the year in which the UK's Forestry Commission was established to increase tree cover, which had fallen to just 5% as a result of the demand for timber during World War One.Today, trees are back in the headlines and on the political agenda. To coincide with the original book's 350th anniversary, two authors have written The New Sylva, a timely updated version for the 21st Century to highlight the strategic, economic and ecological importance of trees." Pp. 129-244 a. 2 engraved plates. (The entire issue offered). Young's papers: pp. 156-205 a. pp. 206-220. And pp. 245-360 a. 2 engraved plates. (The entire issue offered). Young's papers: pp. 255-261 a. pp. 262-290. First appearance in German of Youngs 3 groundbreaking papers ( On the Theory of Light and Colours 1802 - An account of some Cases of the Production of Colours not hitherto described 1802 - The Bakerian Lecture. Experiments and Calculations relative to physical Optics. 1804) - which gives the first really convincing evidence that the fringes are produced by interference of light waves, and giving the experimental demonstrations of the general law of Interference. These importent demonstrations served as the experimental basis for the wave hypothesis of light. - In his two first papers "On the Theory of Light and Colours", 1802 and "An account of Some Cases of the Production of Colours not hitherto described", 1802 - he only partially announced his principle of Interference, and the statement of it in "An Account..." was entirely hypothetical and not experimental. (Magie. Source Book in Physics gives extracts of this paper and a later paper under the head: Discovery of the interference of light, pp.308-15).Young also shows here that diffraction effects can be explained by the interference law."The experimental basis for the wave hypothesis of light as Young formulated it was interference. The fact has already been observed that two trauins of water waves may be so superposed that in certain regions the throughs of one train will lie continuously on the crests of another, thereby producing zero disturbance...Destryctive interference is said to occur between the two trains of waves in the former case and constructivee interference in lthe latter. Similarly, two sound waves may be so combined as to produce alternate regions of silence and enhanced sound. The phenomenon of interference, of which the forgoing are familiar examples, is easely comprehensible in the case of combining waves, but would be utterly incomprehensible in the case of combining streams of particles. So when Young demonstrated that two beams of light could, under properly controlled conditions be made to combine in such a way as to produce alternate regions of darkness and light, he was rightly considered to have identified in light a characteristic property of waves." (Lloyd Taylor in: Physics. The Pioneer Science. p. 511).Of the three papers published in the years 1802-04 the last is the most importent as it gives the experimental demonstrations of the interference of light. (Dibner in Heralds of Science No. 151 list the first paper, so does PMM: 259).

(København [Copenhagen], 1967). 4to. Original illustrated self-wrappers. 36, (4) pp. (Containing 16 poems on 16 leaves and 16 full-page illustration on 16 leaves). Exceptionally fine and clean. Nr. 50 out of 100 numbered copies of this interesting, richly illustrated, publication that was issued in connection with the second International Tribunal on War Crimes, which took place in Denmark. The present copy is signed by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir on front free end-paperThe International Tribunal on War Crimes was initiated by Bertrand Russell in 1966 in order to investigate the background for and art and nature of the American warfare in Vietnam. The tribunal was constituted by a number of internationally famous scientists, authors, and cultural personas; because of their status in society, their moral opposition against America's war-crimes in Vietnam was internationally very effective. The first session of the Tribunal was planned to take place in Paris in April 1967, but when De Gaulle proclaimed that the French government would not allow the arrangement, the first session was quickly moved to Stockholm, where it took place from May 2nd till 10th. It was then decided that the second session should take place in Denmark, which contrary to neutral Sweden through NATO was an ally of USA, and where the press coverage would thus be more effective. Thus, in 1967 a "Danish Bertrand Russell Foundation" was founded - supporting the international war crime tribunal -, which included many of the leading Danish intellectuals of the time. Russell was 95 at the time of the second session, and he couldn't participate, so Sartre acted as president of the jury instead. This session took place at the University of Roskilde, Denmark, from November 18th till December 1st 1967.Another member of the Tribunal was Simone de Beauvoir, who was also present, together with Sartre, in Roskilde the last weeks of November 1967. The present work was issued by the Copenhagen office of the International War Crime Tribunal and the Collection for Vietnam. The work is constituted by contributions by numerous famous Danish poets and artists of the period, who wished to express their solidarity with the International War Crime Tribunal. The work was issued in 1500 copies, 100 of which were numbered.

It was of the greatest importtence as a basis for later developments."He applied his mathematics to astronomy, working out the nature of some perturbations, being in this respect the precursor of Lagrange and Laplace. He began to replace the geometric methods of proof used by Galileo and Newton with the algebraic, a tendency carried to its conclusion by Lagrange. In particular he worked on lunar theory, that is, on the analysis of the exact motion of the moon, the complications of which have been the despair of astronomers and mathematicians since the time of Kepler. - Eneström: 398, 399, 400 a. 401.
