lyn46578
London, 1870. 8vo. Original full cloth with some wear. Inner hinges a bit weak, a stain to the spine ,and minor loss to upper capital. Spine cocked. Bookplate from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to inside of front board, the book-plate stating: "Presented to the Library by Mrs. WM. Boxwell in memory of her husband William Boxwell Professor of Pathology in the Schools of Surgery 1915-1943". XI (including the frontispiece), (1), 180 pp + the 40 pages long advertisement catalogue. Scarce first edition, presentation-copy from the author, of this milestone in the history of aphasia, being one of the first books dedicated exclusively to aphasia, thus constituting one of the most important books ever written on the subject. It influenced not only the field of medicine, but also that of lingustics, psychology, and philosophy. "One of the first books dedicated exclusively to aphasia was published in 1879 by Frederic Bateman (1824-1904) [...] In Bateman's exemplarily systematic workaltogether 72 cases (already published and his own) are discussed in order to clarify the question of localisation of speech. [...] Bateman is the first to clearly propose that aphasia could be described in terms of syndromes and the probability that each individual with aphasia has a unique pattern of symptoms. A range of symptoms and features of aphasia are presented in detail and with examples by Bateman [...] The presentation is impressive from a modern perspective and only disorders of language comprehension and syntax are missing from his extensive surgery." (Juergen Tesak and Chris Code: "Milestones in the History of Apasia. Theories and Protagonists", 2008, p. 63).

MAXWELL, JAMES CLERK. - ESTABLISHING THE SCIENCE OF RAREFIED GAS DYNAMICS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42765
(London, Harrison and Sons, 1880). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", Year 1879, Vol. 171 - Part II. Pp. 231-256. Clean and fine. First appearance of a major paper on Gas Dynamics, creating a whole new science. One of Maxwell's major investigations was on the kinetic theory of gases. Originating with Daniel Bernoulli, this theory was advanced by the successive labours of John Herapath, John James Waterston, James Joule, and particularly Rudolf Clausius, to such an extent as to put its general accuracy beyond a doubt; but it received enormous development from Maxwell, who in this field appeared as an experimenter (on the laws of gaseous friction) as well as a mathematician."Maxwell's last major paper on any subject was "On Stresses in Rarified Gases arising from Inequalities of Temperature." Between 1873 and 1876 the scientific world had been stirred by William Crooke's experiments with the radiometer, the well-known device composed of a partuially evacuated chamber containing a paddle wheel with vanes blackened on one side and silvered on the other, which spins rapidly when radiant heat impinges on it....Reynolds called this new effect "thermal transpiration". Maxwell gave a simple qualitative explanation in his report, and in an appendix added to his own paper in May 1879 he developed a semiempirical theory accounting for it and for the radiometer effect...Maxwell's paper created the science of rarified gas dynamics. His formulas for stress and heat flux in the body of the gas were contributions of permanent value, while his investigations of surface effects started a vast body of research extending to the present day...One other contribution of great beauty contained in notes added to the papwer in May and June 1879 was an application of the methods of spherical harmonic analysis to gas theory."(DSB IX, p. 224-25).

Marianas's importent history of Spain deals with the country from the first settlements to the death of King Ferdinand, who united the Crowns of Castile and Aragon."Among his (Maraina's) literary labours the most important is undoubtedly his great work on the history of Spain, which is still remembered today. There was published as late as 1854, in Madrid, an improved and richly illustrated edition continued up to that year. The work first appeared as "Historiæ de rebus Hispaniæ libri XX. Toleti, typis P. Roderici, 1592". A later edition of the compiler himself, carried on still further is "De rebus Hispaniæ libri XXX", published at Mainz in 160 (the item offered). This edition bears the imprimatur of the order for the thirty books, given by Stephan Hojeda, visitor from Dec., 1598, and of the provincial from 1604. The author had in the mean time converted a Latin edition into Spanish and this appeared complete, containing the thirty books of the Latin edition, at Toledo in 1601. This went through a number of editions during the lifetime of the author and through others after his death" (The Catholic Encyclopedia)..

[Keynes Evelyn 47 (calling for 39 plates); Henrey 137 (calls for 40 plates); Nissen BBI 615 (calling for 41 plates though almost all copies have 40)]. First Hunter edition, sixth overall, of this landmark work on forestry, one of the most influential texts ever published on the subject. The work shaped both the knowledge and the landscape of an entire nation throughout centuries."There can be no doubt that John Evelyn, both during his own lifetime and throughout the two centuries which have elapsed since his death in 1706, has exerted more individual influence, through his charming "Sylva", ... than can be ascribed to any other individual." (Nisbet, in the preface to the 1908 reprint of the 1706-edition).Apart from its pivotal importance to forestry, reforestration, the history of planting in Europe and the direct benefits from that, the book is famously the first book to be printed by the Royal Society, which had been founded in 1664 (the second being Robert Hooke's "Microscopia"). The book was a huge success and it became immensely influential, making Evelyn famous among his contemporaries - such as Pepys, Hooke, and Locke - as a horticultural pioneer . "If you take a stroll through one of the nation's long-established woodlands, there is a good chance its management was inspired, influenced or even instructed by John Evelyn's Sylva.Widely recognised as the first comprehensive study of UK trees, Sylva, or - to give its full title - A Discourse of Forest Trees, and the Propagation of Timber in his Majesty's Dominions, made its first public appearance in 1662 as a paper submitted to the newly formed Royal Society. Two years later, it was published as the Royal Society's first book and went on to not only shape people's knowledge but the landscape itself. And it was an instant success, proving popular beyond its intended audience of wealthy aristocratic landowners, who were urged by Evelyn to plant trees in order to replenish the nation's depleted timber stock.Four editions were produced during Evelyn's lifetime, and the book is still widely quoted and remains in print and freely available online 350 years after its first publication....He designed his first garden when he was 22 years old, two decades before he penned Sylva. It was as a young man, after deciding fighting as a Royalist in the Civil War was not the best career choice, that he travelled across Europe and became fascinated by the formal gardens of France and the expansive grounds of Italy. On his return to England, he continued his work in the garden of his home at Sayes Court in Deptford, South-East London.Being located near the Royal Dockyard on the Thames allowed Evelyn to experiment with newly arrived botanical delights, testing how the flora fared in his English country garden. His attention to detail, and the careful recording of his observations reflected the appetite for empirical evidence among the early pioneers of modern science. "He was one of the early fellows of the Royal Society, which was created in 1660 as a scientific organisation, and Evelyn had spoken with the fellows about his work in this area and it very much chimed with the Society's early objectives," explained Royal Society head librarian Keith Moore. What we do now will have a knock-on effect for generations to come Dr Gabriel Hemery, The New Sylva co-author:"Quite clearly, Evelyn's work in planting forest trees and harvesting the products from them - whether it was wood or apples - really hit the mark; it was exactly what the Royal Society was interested in at that time."And so the seeds of Sylva's success were planted, as landowners heeded Evelyn's advice."Of course, you have to remember that this was after the Civil War so trees across the nation had been denuded as part of the war effort but, as Evelyn himself says in the book, as a result of industrial activities - such as glass making - people were chopping down trees, therefore they had to be replaced," he told BBC News. "Also, he uses the phrase 'wooden walls' - [trees] were very important for the defence of the nation through ship building."...The lasting legacy of Evelyn's vision to sustain the nation's timber supplies was highlighted in 1812 when the book was republished as a call to arms to the nation's landowners as the Napoleonic Wars took their toll on timber supplies. And there were echoes of Evelyn in 1919, the year in which the UK's Forestry Commission was established to increase tree cover, which had fallen to just 5% as a result of the demand for timber during World War One.Today, trees are back in the headlines and on the political agenda. To coincide with the original book's 350th anniversary, two authors have written The New Sylva, a timely updated version for the 21st Century to highlight the strategic, economic and ecological importance of trees." The Royal Academy of Sciencesin Paris biannually qwarded a prize for the most outstanding paper; in 1724 and 1726 the prizes were for papers on percussion. Colin Maclaurin, professor of mathematics at the University of Aberdeen, was awarded the prize in 1724 (forthe paper offered) over John Bernoulli...He expressed thet the interaction of forces on ciolliding bodies are equal in magnitude but opposed in direction (newton's third law) and used the physical construct of an elastic spring between the contact points in order to obtain changes in velocity during compression and restitution phases of collisions..."(W.J. Stronge in "Impact Mechanics").The Scottish mathematician Colin MacLaurin (1698-1746) is best known for developing and extending Newton's work in calculus, geometry and gravitation; his 2-volume work "Treatise of Fluxions" (1742) was the first systematic exposition of Newton's methods. It is well known that MacLaurin was awarded prizes by the Royal Academy of Sciences, Paris, for his earlier work on the collision of bodies (the work offered here) and the tides (1740).

Nr. 50 out of 100 numbered copies of this interesting, richly illustrated, publication that was issued in connection with the second International Tribunal on War Crimes, which took place in Denmark. The present copy is signed by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir on front free end-paperThe International Tribunal on War Crimes was initiated by Bertrand Russell in 1966 in order to investigate the background for and art and nature of the American warfare in Vietnam. The tribunal was constituted by a number of internationally famous scientists, authors, and cultural personas; because of their status in society, their moral opposition against America's war-crimes in Vietnam was internationally very effective. The first session of the Tribunal was planned to take place in Paris in April 1967, but when De Gaulle proclaimed that the French government would not allow the arrangement, the first session was quickly moved to Stockholm, where it took place from May 2nd till 10th. It was then decided that the second session should take place in Denmark, which contrary to neutral Sweden through NATO was an ally of USA, and where the press coverage would thus be more effective. Thus, in 1967 a "Danish Bertrand Russell Foundation" was founded - supporting the international war crime tribunal -, which included many of the leading Danish intellectuals of the time. Russell was 95 at the time of the second session, and he couldn't participate, so Sartre acted as president of the jury instead. This session took place at the University of Roskilde, Denmark, from November 18th till December 1st 1967.Another member of the Tribunal was Simone de Beauvoir, who was also present, together with Sartre, in Roskilde the last weeks of November 1967. The present work was issued by the Copenhagen office of the International War Crime Tribunal and the Collection for Vietnam. The work is constituted by contributions by numerous famous Danish poets and artists of the period, who wished to express their solidarity with the International War Crime Tribunal. The work was issued in 1500 copies, 100 of which were numbered.

His military treatise is dedicated to Hadrian. It is a handbook of Greek, i.e. Macedonian, drill and tactics as practised by the Hellenistic successors of Alexander the Great. The work exercised a great influence. The translations made in the 16th century formed the groundwork of numerous books on drill and tactics. The first edition of the Greek text was issued by Robortelli in Venice 1552 - the Italian edition as here a year before. Recorded in Conrad Walther: Versuch...Militair=Bibliothek. 1783 p. 7 (x), and by Rumpf: Allg. Literatur d. Kriegswiss. 1824, No 321. - The work by Frontinus is third Italian edition (Graesse II:640), and is a translation of the authors military work which consists of military Stratagems from Greek and Roman History (Strategematcon libri III). He was also the author of De aquis urbis Romae (Romes water-supply) as he was appointed to superintendent of the aquaducts. - Both works of greatest rarity, and internally in fine condition.
