Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1880. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 90, No 6 a. No 17. Pp. (233-) 260 a. pp. (937-) 1020. (2 entire issues offered). With title-page to vol. 90. Pasteur's papers: pp. 239-248 a. pp. 952-958. A few scattered marginal brownspots. First printing of a these milestone papers which laid the foundations of immunology. Pasteur discovers the procedure for immunizing chicken against chicken cholera. Chickens injected with an old culture of chicken cholera microbes become sick briefly, but revive, and are henceforth immune to new virulent cultures."This paper (the first paper offered) marked the beginning of Pasteur's work onthe attenuation of the infective organism. Noting that fowls inoculated with an attenuated form of the chicken cholera bacterium acquired immunity, he developed the idea of a protective inoculation by attenuated living cultures, and subsequently adopted this principle with anthrax, rabies, and swine crysipelas. His wotk laid the foundatuion of the sciencwe of immunology."(Garrison & Morton No 2537)."In February 1880 (the first paper offered) Pasteur announced that although the fowl cholera microbe retained its virulence through successive cultures in chicken brothe, he had found a way of decreasing its virulence "by certain changes in the mode of culture." In this milder form the microbe usually produced disease, but not death, in chickens. More important, the chickens that recovered from this less virulent form of the microbe became relatively immune to the highly virulent from. Unlike ordinary chickens they did not die from an injection of the microbe in its usual form. In other words, Pasteur concluded, "The disease is its own preventive. It has the character of the virus diseases, which do not recur. "what gave this result special importance and novelty was the demonstrably microbial nature of fowl cholera." (DSB)."In April 1880 he admitted that inoculation with the attenuated form of the fowl cholera microbe produced very different results in different hens, but he insisted that the procedure always conferred some benefit. Even when two or more inoculations were required for complete protection against the disease, each acted in some measure to impede its course. He emphasized that "vaccinated" chickens, as well as species naturally resistant to the disease, must represent cultural media somehow ill-suited for the development of the microbe and suggested that this immunity probably resulted from the absence of some substance essential to the life of the microbe." (DSB).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1880 B. - Garrison & Morton No 2537.

Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities, primarily affecting spines. Internally fine and clean, a nice set. (4), XXXII, 284 pp; (4), 256 pp. First edition (Hague-edition – an edition in Avignon was published same year, no priority has been established) "Scarce. An early comprehensive dictionary defining terms used in the 18th century study of oryctology, which by today's convention would include all of the earth sciences such as geology, mineralogy, crystallography, paleontology, and vulcanology. In the alphabetical list, various terms deal with earths, salts, sulfurs, bitumens, petroleum, simple and complex stones, common and precious gems, minerals, metals, petrifications of animals and plants, the latest theories on their formation, and their uses. In many instances a substantial definition is provided, which shows Bertrand's good knowledge of the subject.” (Schuh, Mineralogy & Crystallography, A Biobibliography, 1469 to 1920, 523) Elie Bertrand (1713-1797) was a Swizz geologist and naturalist, but also theologian, economist and tutor and one of the key representatives of the Swizz Enlightenment.

First appearance of all 4 papers constituting Planck's seminal papers on entropy carrying the general title "On the principles of Increase of Entropy" in which he applied the second law of thermodynamics to chemical problems."His goal was, as he said in the first paper of the series, to carry further the "grand generalization" of Helmholtz, Josiah Willard Gibbs, and others: like the first principle of the mechanical heat theory, the second, the "Carnot-Clausius", principle applies not only to heat phenomena but to all kinds of physical and chemical phenomena; and because the second principle applies not only to reversible processes but also to irreversible, or "natural", processes, it applies to all processes whatsoever..."(Jungnickel and McCormach "Intellectual Mastery of Nature, vol. 2, pp. 52 ff.)What Einstein admired and called Planck's "first great scientific discovery" was the generality of its formulas which contain all that can be derived from pure thermodynamic principles. FRESNEL, AUGUSTIN. - OVERTHROWING THE CORPUSCULAR THEORY OF LIGHT.

(Paris, Crochard, 1816) No wrappers. In: 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', Tome I, Sec. Series, Cahier Mars 1816. With htitle to vol. I. Pp. 225-336 and 1 folded engraved plate. (The entire issue offered). Fresnel's paper: pp. 239-281. The plate shows the diffraction patterns. First appearance of Fresnel's landmark mémoir - this mémoir was his first paper on diffraction, and was later given the prize of the French Academy and published in Memoires de l'Academie in 1826 in full, together with his further developments of his light theory - in which he for the first time explained the causes of the diffraction effects as the mutual interference of the secondary waves emitted by those portions of the original wave-front which have not been obstructed by the diffraction screen. His methods of calculation utilized the principles of both Huygens and Young and he summed the effects due to different portions of the same primary wave-front. The memoir records also Fresnel's famous mirror-experiment."In broad context Fresnel's work can be viewed as the first successfull assault on the theory of imponderables and a major influence on the development of nineteenth-centurty energetics." (DSB V, p. 171)."Augustin Fresnel seems to have adopted a wave theory of light from the very beginning of his studies. His first paper, presented to the Academy...in October 1815, and entitled "La Diffraction de la Lumiere" (the paper offered), was written after a long correspondance with Arago, who had promised Fresnel his full support. "The wave theory" Fresnel wrote, "is well suited to explaining the complicated propagation of light phenomena, and since, as we know from the case of sound, waves can surcomvent obstacles, I decided to make a study of shadows.....It is because they cross in regions common to them both that two pencils of rays can produce fringes. hence it follows that the vibrations of rays which cross at very small angles can cancel out whenever crests of one correspond to the throughs of the other."

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two birds, female in the nest, foliage, flowering plants, fungi on trunk. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Bookplate from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to inside of front board, the book-plate stating: "Presented to the Library by Mrs. WM. Boxwell in memory of her husband William Boxwell Professor of Pathology in the Schools of Surgery 1915-1943". XI (including the frontispiece), (1), 180 pp + the 40 pages long advertisement catalogue. Scarce first edition, presentation-copy from the author, of this milestone in the history of aphasia, being one of the first books dedicated exclusively to aphasia, thus constituting one of the most important books ever written on the subject. It influenced not only the field of medicine, but also that of lingustics, psychology, and philosophy. "One of the first books dedicated exclusively to aphasia was published in 1879 by Frederic Bateman (1824-1904) [...] In Bateman's exemplarily systematic workaltogether 72 cases (already published and his own) are discussed in order to clarify the question of localisation of speech. [...] Bateman is the first to clearly propose that aphasia could be described in terms of syndromes and the probability that each individual with aphasia has a unique pattern of symptoms. A range of symptoms and features of aphasia are presented in detail and with examples by Bateman [...] The presentation is impressive from a modern perspective and only disorders of language comprehension and syntax are missing from his extensive surgery."
