London, Charles Greene, 1644 & 1645. 4to. In contemporary full calf with double ruled fillets to boards. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Wear and soiling to extremities. Lower left corner of front board with loss of leather. Doodles in contemporary hand to end-papers which are partly detached, otherwise internally nice and clean. (12), 218, 42, (1) pp. The rare first edition of Shute’s posthumously published sermons on judgement and mercy and his funeral sermon preached by Ephraim Udall. Josias Shute (1588–1643) acted from 1632 as chaplain to the East India Company, preached thanksgiving and other sermons for them at St. Helena. Shute was appointed by Charles I to the archdeaconry of Colchester on 15 April 1642, and was chosen on 14 June 1643 by the houses of parliament a member of the Westminster Assembly of divines but died on 13 June 1643, before the first sitting.. Thomas Fuller, English Churchman and historian says he was 'molested and vext to death by the rebels,' and that he was denied a funeral sermon by Richard Holdsworth, Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, as he wished. One was, however, preached by Ephraim Udall which is offered here.

Pp. 1-208, 1 fold. plate a. 1 portrait (P. Curie) a. pp. 609-800, 1 plate. (Entire issues offered). Einsteins paper: pp. 180-190 and p. 800. Astamp to verso of plates and a few leaves. THE PRINTED WRAPPERS LOOSE. First printing of a major paper in Quantum Theory, introducing the first systematic introduction of probability factors in Quantum Theory."From 1905 through 1909 Einstein published five major papers on the hypothesis of energy quanta, its theoretical implications, and its use in the explanation of various phenomena. Among these papers we have his importent paper "Die Plancksche..." and in his second paper from 1906d he asserted that Planck's derivation implicitly assumes quantification of the enrgies of charged oscillators. Now (in the paper offered) he returned to this question, showing that, if the structure function in phase space he had introduced earlier is assumed to restrict the oscillators to orbits with energies that are integral mulætiples of 'hv', then the average oscillator energy in a canonical ensemble yealds Planck's law, when substituted in eg. The works contains the first systematic introduction of probability factors in the mathematics of Quantum Theory." Weil: nos 15 (1-2 with an asterix, denoting a major paper). - Boni: 15.

Occassional brown spots throughout, otherwise fine. XXVI, 383, (2) pp.; IV, 550, (2) pp.; IV, 498, (2) pp. First edition of Massei's important work which constitutes one of earliest attempts in Italy to link health problems and poverty. In the present work Massei examines the various health problems that can be linked to poverty, and proposes a number of remedies, chiefly linked to hygiene. He argues against the notion that almsgiving can provide a solution, proposing instead a system whereby municipal aid is offered in people's homes.Previously Massei had done extensive work on public education in Bologna, and was involved in a project to reform public charities in the light of the increasing numbers of poor people. His work with the Società agrarian of Bologna initiated much research on rural poverty and its causes.

In physics, the term solenoid refers to a long, thin loop of wire, often wrapped around a metallic core, which produces a magnetic field when an electric current is passed through it. Solenoids are important because they can create controlled magnetic fields and can be used as electromagnets. The term solenoid refers specifically to a magnet designed to produce a uniform magnetic field in a volume of space (where some experiment might be carried out)."The volume contains further importent papers by Poisson "Sur la Chaleur rayonnante", pp. 225-246 + Note.. pp. 442-44, Gay-Lussac, Savart, Pelletier et Caventou, Becquerel etc.

In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 7, 2e Series. 448 pp. a. 2 engraved plates. (the entire volume offered). Dulong & Petit-papers: pp. 113-154, pp. 225-264, pp. 337-367. Clean and fine. First edition of these 3 groundbreaking papers with the first appearance in print of THE LAW OF THE CONSTANCY OF ATOMIC HEAT, i.e. the specific heat multiplied by the atomic weight. The insight had far reaching implications as it showed a new way to Dalton's atomic theory."In 1815 Dulong's famous collaboration with the mathematical physicist Alexis Therese Petit began; it produced three importent memoirs on heat." (the papers offered here). The 2 first was awarded the price of the Academy in 1818 and was leading up to the last paper in which they formulted the "Law of the Constancy of product of atomic weight and specific heat""They (Dulang and Petit) were concerned with the specific heats of elements; but if these elements really existed as atoms, it seemed possible that there might be a connection between trhe weight of the atom and the amount of heat aquired to raise the temperature of a given weight of that element by a certain amount." (DSB). - "One of his (Dulong) most importent researches was made in collaboration with Alexis Thérese Petit (1791-1820), with whom he announced the law that the product of atomic weight and specific heat is constant (1819). It rendered a distinct service in fixing atomic weights, especially when these were in question, and enabled Berzelius and later Cannizzaro to arrive at correct atomic weights and the correct number of atoms in molecules." (Leicester & Klickstein, A source Book in Chemistry 1400-1900, p. 273). - Parkinson, Breakthroughs (1819).

Offprint from "Annalen der Physik und Chemie", Neue Folge, Band 64, 1898. Two stamp to top left corner of front wrapper. "Habilitations-Schrift" written in ink to top of front wrapper. A fine copy. Pp. 101-130. First edition, in the scarce author's presentation offprint issue, of this important paper on the discontinuity of temperature widely regarded as being his first important contribution to science. The work is of seminal importance for by publishing it Smoluchowski joined the dispute on the validity of atomic conceptions. These were far from accepted at the end of the nineteenth century and their recognition was partly due to Smoluchowski."In 1875 Warburg and A. Kundt, on the basis of the kinetic theory of gases, had predicted that if the temperature of a gas differed from that of the container wall, the former temperature would not pass continuously to the latter: there would be a discontinuity of temperature between the gas and the wall. Their experiments, successful in the case of the analogous phenomenon of the slipping of gases, had not been decisive for temperature discontinuity. Smoluchowski, observing the cooling time of a thermometer in a gas-filled container, demonstrated that an effect exists and reached significant values with rarefied gas in [The present paper].This work was of special importance. For by publishing it Smoluchowski joined the dispute on the validity of atomic conceptions. These, represented in physics mainly by the kinetic theory of gases developed by Boltzmann. were far from accepted at the end of the nineteenth century; and their recognition was partly due to Smoluchowski. At that time only a few phenomena were predicted by the kinetic theory or required it for intelligibility. Among them was discontinuity of temperature, for its existence was wholly unexplained from a classical point of view. Moreover, in 1897 after his return to Vienna, Smoluchowski pointed out the quantitative agreement of his experimental results with the kinetic theory. In 1898 the University of Vienna admitted him veniam legendi." (DSB).
