WIEGLEB, JOHANN CHRISTIAN. - THE SHOWDOWN WITH ALCHEMISTRY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn52761
Weimar, Carl Ludolf Hoffmann, 1777. Small 8vo. A bit later marbled boards. Spine gone. (22),437,(3) pp. Light toning to text and some scattered brownspots. Scarce first edition of Wiegleb's most importent work and one of the most importent historical criticism of the alchymistic theories of transmutations. "Wiegleb’s critical attitude in assessing scientific questions earned him high esteem in learned circles. After several years of work he published Historisch-kritische Untersuchung der Alchemie (1777), which went through a second edition. In this work he stated: "The best accounts from the period when the name alchemy is encountered, . . . are examined, and it is thereby demonstrated that they are, taken together, incapable of confirming the reality of alchemy. Then, the strongest proof is adduced to show that the entire imaginary art of alchemy is impossible according to all known, certain natural laws of human art: thus [it is shown] that it has never truly been practiced by anyone." Wiegleb carefully examined famous reports of the transformation of metals and pointed out their deficiencies: in a short time his work became widely known. His motto was "To doubt is the beginning of knowledge," so it is all the more as tonishing that Wiegleb was a convinced proponent of Stal’s phlogiston theory throughout his life." ROBBINS, LIONEL.

London, Macmillan & Co., 1932. 8vo. In the original green embossed cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Printed on thick paper. A few scratches to back board. Otherwise an very fine copy. XII, 141, (3) pp. First edition of Robbins's landmark publication, in which he sought to define more precisely economics as a science. With the present publication he became instrumental in shifting Anglo-Saxon economics from its Marshallian direction which eventually caused the breakthrough of neo-classical (Walrasian) definition of economics. The work is "one of the most cited, if not most read, books on the subject in the period 1932-60, and it influenced greatly economists' views about the nature of their discipline." (The New Palgrave). The definitions of economics presented here "were widely accepted by the world of academic economists and are still propagated" (The New Palgrave).Robbins put forth two central themes, both having a lasting and deep influence upon economics of the 20th century, the first being: "That economic science could be clearly demarcated from those discussions of economic issues that involved value judgments - by which latter term Robbins meant evaluation statements of the form 'better or worse' where inter-personal comparisons of utility were involved. He also argued that there was a clear demarcation between economic science and other branches of social enquiry such as social psychology, sociology, politics and so on."The second major theme was that the subject matter of economic science was not a particular activity (for example, Cannan's view that economics was the science of wealth), but rather an aspect of all human conduct. This aspect was the 'fact' of economic scarcity - a manifestation of unlimited ends on the part of individuals and society and means of satisfying those ends that were limited in supply. In word so often quoted in economics text Robbins defined economic science as 'that science that studies the relationship between ends and means that have alternative uses' - a definition that is more than reminiscent of Menger's exposition of the economizing process." (The New palgrave)Lionel Robbins (1898 - 1984) was a British (mainly theoretical) economist and head of the economics department at the London School of Economics. In macroeconomics Robbins's was a firm exponent of the Hayek's - and the Austrian school in general - teachings whom he brought to the London School of Economics in 1928. His liberal view was expressed when he famously, together with Joseph Schumpeter, advocated that nothing should be done about the 1929-depression and that it had to run its course since this alone would create a lasting development out of the depression.

NECKER, (J.).

(Paris?), 1784. 8vo. Bound in three nice, uniform brown half calf bindings withtitle- and tome-labels to spines. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy. VII, (1), CLIX, (1), 352 pp., one folded table; VII, (1), 536 pp.; VIII, 468 pp. The table in volume one lying loose. The very rare first edition, first printing (see Carpenter) of Necker's seminal main work - a work which helped cement Necker's great reputation and which furthermore constitutes the only authentic account of the finances of France before the Revolution. The French bankier Jacques Necker, who was appointed French Minister of Finance during three periods (1777-1781, 1788-1789, 1789-1790), was famous for his opposition to the physiocrats. He replaced Turgot in as Minister of Finance in 1776, and attacked Turgot's plan for free trade in grains. He initiated economic reforms which were designed to help the poor French economy. Instead of using the more traditional method of raising taxes he, on the contrary, raised the interest rates and kept the comparatively low income-tax. At the time he was regarded a financial genius primarily because of his ability to aid the American Colonies in their war of independence against England without raising taxes. Thereby he used his economic skills not only to help the domestic economy but also as a mean of foreign political pressure. His most famous contribution to French history in general is the publication of his "Compte rendu au Roi" ("Report to the King"), in which the public for the first time could read about the government income and expenditures. His will and ambitions to inform and educate the people together with the fact that he was a commoner made him popular with the people. Partly due to his public popularity, on July 11th 1789 he was dismissed, an act which caused public rioting. These riots, combined with the economic crisis and high inflated corn-prices, led to the storming of the Bastille on July 14th 1789.During his retirement, Necker wrote his famous "Traité de l'administration des finances de la France", which today is regarded the most comprehensive and in-depth explanation of Necker's economic thoughts. It had such an enormous success with the general reader that within a few days, more than 80.000 copies were sold! According to Carpenter, no less than 7 issues were printed during the first year of publication, and they are very difficult to know from eachother; "All are printed from the same setting of type, but they differ slightly in terms of the pagination... These slight variations indicate great demand. There were also pirated French editions." (Carpenter). According to Carpenter, the present copy is the rare actual first issue of this seminal work, which contributed greatly to bolstering Necker's reputation.Carpenter XXIX(1) Einaudi A.582 Goldsmith 12732 INED 3358 Kress B752.

A few closed tears to spine and restoration to lower margin of front wrapper, far from affecting text. A fine copy. VII, (1), 96 pp. First edition, presentation-copy, of the first text-book on rocketry and space-craft, together with the first edition of the important text of Esnault-Pelterie's 1927-symposium on the possibility of interplanetary travel. L'Astronautique with signed presentation-inscription to page 9: "With compliments / Esnault / Oct 1932". "Robert Albert Charles Esnault-Pelterie (1881 - 1957) was a pioneering French spaceflight theorist and aircraft designer. He combined a mixture of theoretical and practical work and is well known for being the inventor of the control stick of the aeroplane. He was furthermore the fourth man in France to obtain the pilot's license."L'Astronautique outlined the key steps involved in the launching of an Earth satellite, interplanetary travel and rockettrajectories. Esnault-Pelterie began building his own rocket engine early the following year [1931]. In 1932 a rocket engine experiment went horribly wrong when the tetranitromethane fuel with which he was working exploded and he lost four fingers." (Harvey, Brian. Europe's Space Programme: To Ariane and Beyond, Springer, 2003, 3 pp.)Besides being remembered as a spaceflight-pioneer, Esnault-Pelteries has given name to the Esnault-Pelterie-crater on the Moon. "In the 1937 universal exhibition he stages an 'Astronautics Hall' and his moon rocket became the basis of Tin Tin's cartoon moon rocket." Oslo, Fram Forlag, 1930 - 1931. 5 parts (all). 8vo. 5 part in publisher's original 3 full cloth bindings with title and author in black lettering to front boards and spines. Spines lightly miscoloured, otherwise fine and clean. 166 pp.;144 pp.; 237 pp. The uncommon first Norwegian translation of Marx’s ‘Das Kapital’ – only volume 1 was ever translated. The translation was commissioned by ‘Mot Dag’, a Norwegian political group active from the 1920s to the early 1930s and was first affiliated with the Labour Party. After World War II, many of its former members were leaders in Norwegian politics and cultural activities. “Although always small in numbers and often regarded with suspicion by Labour and trade union leaders, the Mot Dag organization was nevertheless an important factor in providing the Norwegian workers’ movement with a cultural policy and attracting artists, writers and intellectuals to the socialist cause. Well-known and respected authors and artists figured prominently in the organisation’s ranks as members and as contributors to the journal of the same name. Mot Dag was also instrumental in establishing cultural and educational enterprises for Norwegian workers within the workers’ movement, most famously the Arbeidernes leksikon (The Workers’ Encyclopaedia), a gigantic and unique collective effort by specialists and writers who worked without remuneration. It set up a successful publishing house where Falk published his Norwegian translation of the first volume of Marx’s Das Kapital (Capital), an undertaking that actually turned out to be profitable. In many ways Mot Dag had a position in Norway comparable to that of The Partisan Review in the United States, as an organisation that, as Hugh Wilford puts it, had a “dual commitment to anti-Stalinist Marxism and cultural Modernism”” (Sørenssen, Olav Dalgard – Politics, Film, Theatre and the Avant-Garde in Norway in the Interwar Years)

[Slovenia], Agit-Prop komisija centralnega komiteta komunistiène partije Slovenije [Agitprop Commiss Small4to (110x145 mm). In the original black/red printed stapled wrappers. With a few occassional blue underlignings. 31, (1) pp. Rare Slovenian translation of the Communist Manifesto, printed by an undergorund partisan press. The present edition of the Manifesto was printed and distributed by Agitprop, the Communist Party institution that controlled education, publishing, libraries and mass media from the end of World War II until 1952. Presumably the present publication was, if not the very first, then among the first publications made by Agitprop. Until the end of World War II Agitprop was essentially an underground movement whose goal was to pave the way for communism after the war. After the resistance in Slovenia started in summer 1941, Italian violence against the Slovene civilian population escalated and to counter the Communist-led insurgence, the Italians sponsored local anti-guerrilla units, formed mostly by the local conservative Catholic Slovene population that resented the revolutionary violence of the partisans. After the Italian armistice of September 1943, the Germans took over both the Province of Ljubljana and the Slovenian Littoral. They united the Slovene anti-Communist counter-insurgence into the Slovene Home Guard and appointed a puppet regime in the Province of Ljubljana. The anti-Nazi resistance however expanded, creating its own administrative structures as the basis for Slovene statehood within a new, federal and socialist Yugoslavia. In 1945, Yugoslavia was liberated by the underground resistance and soon became a socialist federation known as the People's Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Slovenia joined the federation as a constituent republic, led by its own pro-Communist leadership and Agitprop became the official mass media institution.

Large allegorical vignette to dedication. 102 lovely engravings of coins in the text. (20), 218 pp. Engraved book-plate to inside of front board: "Sir Francis L.H. Goodricke Bart." Sherling" as well as gift-inscription (from Edmund Caldwell, to St. Michaelis Convent) to front free end-paper: "Monasteris St. Michaelis/ D.D./ Don. Edmundus Caldwell O.S.B./ a.d. 1871". Early inscription to title-page. Scarce first edition of this standard work, one of the most important histories of the Egyptian Kingdom of the Ptolemies (323 B.C. to 30 B.C.), considered one of the most influential works on this complicated and perplexed part of ancient history. The work quickly became the main reference-work on the subject. It is especially noteworthy in its inclusion of Ptolemaeic coinage and is one of the first modern histories of the Ptolemies to not merely treat the subject chronologically; it is the first to explain this period by help of coins. The Ptolemaic Kingdom was a Hellenistic kingdom in Egypt. It was ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty that Ptolemy I Soter founded after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC-which ended with the death of Cleopatra VII and the Roman conquest in 30 BC. The Ptolemies were the Greek Rulers in Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great. The vast empire that Alexander the Great had conquered, was too big for one successor. One general was entrusted with Macedonia, another Thrace, and a third Syria. Ptolemy I Soter, one of Alexander's favorite generals, was made governor of Egypt. Alexandria, the capital city, quickly became a center of Greek culture and trade. For more than 350 years the Ptolemies ruled Egypt. Ptolemy's son Ptolemy Philadelpus ruled after Alexander's general. It was Ptolemy Phladelphus who made the library at Alexandria the best in the world. With the death of Cleopatra, probably the most famous of the Ptolemies, the dynasty of the Ptolemies came to an end and Egypt became part of the Roman Empire.

Bindings with considerable wear, worm holes to boards, leather detached from edges of boards making the wooden boards visible. Spine-ends with loss of leather, end-bands showing. With occassional browning throughout. Some papers creased. (50 - including the frontispiece), 740 (8), 276, (200) pp. (With the following errors in pagination in vol. 2: 1-84, 95-98, 199, 100-101, 202, 103-174, 171-172, 177-236, 235, 238, 237-268.). With many emblems (included in the pagination) throughout. Fifth Latin edition, rarely found complete with both volumes as here, of Picinello’s magnificent and highly popular encyclopaedia of emblems - a cornerstone of emblematic literature and an essential guide for understanding the allegorical language of the Baroque era. “Picinelli’s intention was to compile a collection of brief interpretations which he wanted to have close to hand, especially on his travels as a preacher. From this collection of emblems, originally covering only four pages, the full reference work developed. The author wants the book to be understood not only figuratively as a book of the world: for him it really is the world, it contains the world in all its reality and, conversely, the whole world can be derived from it. In this he follows the interpretation of Romans 1,20 that, since the creation of the world, the invisible secrets of God can be perceived by the understanding mind through His works.” (Olms Online) Filippo Picinelli (1604 – 1679) was an Augustinian munk. Picinelli was born in Milan, Italy in 1604 and joined the Augustinian Order in 1614. He studied philosophy and theology at Cremona and Piacenza and lived in Milan. "The merits of all preceding editions are eclipsed by this celebrated one of Joshua Barnes. Fabricius observes that 'the text is accurately revised and printed, the metrical rules of Canter diligently corrected, and the entire ancient scholia on the first seven plays subjoined and enriched by excerpta from a manuscript in Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The notes of various learned men, and those of Barnes accompany the scholia; the fragments of Euripides are carefully collected and displayed, with Greek and Latin notes as far as verse 2068; lastly, there are some epistles, attributed to Euripides.'"(Dibdin). “In 1694, Joshua Barnes, the eccentric British scholar (and poet) of Greek who the next year would become Regius Professor at the University of Cambridge, published his long-awaited Euripidis quae extant omnia. This was an enormous edition of Euripides’ works which contained every scrap of Euripidean material—dramatic, fragmentary, and biographical —that Barnes had managed to unearth.” (Hanink, The Life of the Author in the Letters of “Euripides”)

(Cambridge, Cambridge University Press), 1937. Royal8vo. Original printed wrappers. Faint fading to extremities of wrappers, otherwise mint. 1 blank leaf, pp. (220)-235. First edition, offprint, of Jahn and Teller's important publication on the geometrical distortion of non-linear molecules - now known as the Jahn-Teller effect - which was to become a groundbreaking tool for research in crystals and molecular configurations in general."The Jahn-Teller effect is one of the most fascinating phenomena in modern physics and chemistry. It emerged in 1934 in a discussion between two famous physicists [...] and grew into a general tool for understanding and an approach to solving molecular and crystal problems, which is applicable to any polyatomic problem. The first formulation of the effect as instability of molecular configurations in electronically degenerate states proved to be the beginning of a whole trend which rationalizes the origin of all possible instabilities of high-symmetry configurations, and the peculiar nuclear dynamics resulting from these instabilities as well as the origins of all structural symmetry breakings in molecular systems and condensed matter. The next significant resurgence of interest in the Jahn-Teller effect is related to the late 1980s and is still continuing. It was triggered by one of the most important Nobel Prize discoveries in physics of our times inspired by the Jahn-Teller effect: the high-temperature superconductivity." (Bersuker, The Jahn-Teller Effect). "The Jahn-Teller effect continues to be a paradigm for structural instabilities and dynamical processes in molecules and in the condensed phase. While the basic theorem, first published in 1937, had to await experimental verification for 15 years, the intervening years have seen rapid development, initially in the theoretical arena, followed increasingly by experimental work on molecules and crystals. Among the many important developments in the field we mention cooperative phenomena in crystals, the general importance of pseudo-Jahn-Teller couplings for symmetry-lowering phenomena in molecular systems, nonadiabatic processes at conical intersections of potential energy surfaces and extensions of the basic theory in relation to the discovery of fullerenes and other icosahedral systems." (Köppel, The Jahn-Teller Effect: Fundamentals and Implications for Physics and Chemistry).Edward Teller's greatest long term contribution to science is his present discovery. He was, however, a highly controversial physicist in contemporary science: "Though an accomplished theoretical physicist, Teller is best known for his early contributions to the development of the hydrogen bomb and his unwavering defense of nuclear weapons. His support of weapons and opposition to test bans, along with his advocacy of projects such as the Strategic Defense Initiative, made him both one of the most controversial physicists of the twentieth century and one of the most politically influential.Dawn of the Atomic Age. Teller first began to consider the possibilities of a hydrogen weapon in late 1941 when, during a brief period at Columbia University, he met with Nobel laureate Enrico Fermi. Fermi had proposed that a fission explosion might create conditions close enough to what occurs within stars to induce the fusion of heavy hydrogen or deuterium nuclei, which, unlike standard hydrogen nuclei that contain only one proton, feature both a proton and a neutron. Though Teller was initially skeptical, he quickly established himself as the leading proponent of fusion weapons. During a 1942 meeting of top physicists at the University of California at Berkeley called by J. Robert Oppenheimer to discuss the potential development of fission weapons, Teller suggested that the prospect of building a hydrogen weapon, a "Super," be explored as well.Though Teller's advocacy of nuclear weapons put him at odds with many in the scientific community, it also provided him with powerful allies in the military and government who shared Teller's vision of sophisticated, often then-unrealized, technology playing a major role in defense. Whereas he never achieved the same high profile as Oppenheimer once had, Teller maintained an important voice on issues of science and defense in numerous administrations up to and including that of Ronald Reagan." Second Series" bound together in a very nice contemporary blue full cloth binding with gilt lettering and gilt ex-libris ("Belford College. Univ. London") to spine. Minor bumping to extremities. Binding tight, and in excellent, very nice, clean, and fresh condition, in- as well as ex-ternally. [Vol. 39:] pp. 249-271. [Entire volume: (Vol. 39:) (4), 546 pp. + (Vol. 40:) (4), 558 pp]. First publication of Hodge's seminal work on harmonic integrals. In the article Hodge showed that most of the elementary properties of harmonic functions could be extended to harmonic functional."Hodge is famous for his theory of harmonic integrals (or forms), which was described by Weyl as "one of the landmarks of twentieth century mathematics." [...] Hodge's work straddles the area between algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and complex analysis. It can be seen as a natural outgrowth of the theory of Riemann surfaces and the work of Lefschetz on the topology of algebraic varieties. It put the algebraic geometry on a modern analytic footing and prepared the ground for the spectacular breakthroughs of the postwar period of the 1950s and 1960s." (Gowers, The Princeton Companion to Mathematics, 2008).Hodge himself states in the introduction to the present work: "In two papers I have defined integrals, which I have called harmonic integrals, which are associated with an analytic variety to which a metric is attached, and have established an existence theorem for them. More recently I have applied the theory of these integrals to the Riemannian manifold of an algebraic surface with the topological invariants of the Manifold. There is reason to believe that this method of considering the Abelian integrals attached to an algebraic variety will prove a powerful one, and I have thought it advisable to set out in the following pages an account of the principles on which the method is based." In 1941 Hodge published the book "The theory and applications of harmonic integrals" which expanded and elaborated the ideas presented in the present article.

Berlin, 1954-59. Lex 8vo. All three in the original blue full cloth bindings, in excellent condition, in- as well as ex-ternally. Some light pencil-underlinings. 477, (3); 512, (1); 518, (1) pp. + Errata for vols. I+II laid loose in vol. With a five-line presentation-inscription to front free end-paper of volume 1, signed in full: "Herrn Gehrke/ in freundlicher Gesinnung/ mit besten Wünschen/ 30.VIII.54/ Ernst Bloch". The scarce first edition of all three volumes, with signed and dated presentation-inscription (in the year of appearance), of Bloch's magnum opus, his seminal "The Principle of Hope", which constitutes his philosophy of concrete utopia. The hugely influential German philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) was born as the son of Jewish parents in Ludwigshafen. He studied philosophy, physics, German and music in Munich and Würzburg and later became a main figure in Neomarxism. As his first book, "Geist der Utopie" was written while in exile in Switzerland during the First World War, this his main work was written while in exile in America during the Second World War, between 1938 and 1947, and it appeared for the first time in the DDR between 1954 and 1959. "The Principle of Hope" is considered a philosophical-political piece of art, which consideres in both philosophical-scientific and humanistic ways the possibilities for a utopia, at the same time as it traces throughout history man's strivings for utopia. The world is presented as open to man - open for man to make it the place that enables us to live like proper human beings. "Ernst Bloch's Principle of Hope is one of the key books of our century. Part philosophic speculation, part political treatise, part lyric vision, it is exercising a deepening influence on thought and on literature. . . . No political or theological appropriations of Bloch's leviathan can exhaust its visionary breadth." (editorial review by George Steiner, the 1986 English language edition). As his "Geist der Utopie" begins with the powerful words: "What now? It is enough. Now we have to begin. Life has been put in our hands. In itself it has already become empty long ago. It staggers senselessly around, but we stand firm, and thus we want to be its Faustus and its ends.", so his "Das Prinzip Hoffnung" begins with the equally powerful words: "Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? What do we expect? What awaits us? Many feel as nothing but confused. The ground rocks, they do not know why and from what. This their state is fear, if it becomes more defined, it is fear. Once, someone set out to learn fear." (""Wer sind wir? Wo kommen wir her? Wohin gehen wir? Was erwarten wir? Was erwartet uns? Viele fühlen sich nur als verwirrt. Der Boden wankt, sie wissen nicht warum und von was. Dieser ihr Zustand ist Angst, wird er bestimmter, so ist er Furcht. Einmal zog einer aus, das Fürchten zu lernen."The conception of "Prinzip Hoffnung" has now, due to this work, become a frequently used saying, not only in Germany, but also in America and large parts of Europe, where "The Pronciple of Hope" is used in numerous political and economical discussions, most actually for instance in the climate debate. The influence of the work has been immense, and it has done much to re-create modern man's belief in the world today and our ability to do good.

REYNARD THE FOX

lyn60391
(Rostock, Stephan Mölleman, 1592) 4to. In contemporary limp vellum. Extremities with light soiling and miscolouring. Front free end-paper annotated in contemporary hand. Three leaves (T-Tiii) with repairs with loss of text and woodcut. Title-page and colophone supplied in facsimilie. Internally with light occassional browning but in general good condition. 272 ff (f. 272 erroneously printed as f. 273) with 44 woodcut illustrations in text. Later Rostock edition of the famous epic. Circulating from the 12th-century and derived in part from Aesop, Reynard the Fox is one of the most popular and enduring beast-epics. Reynard the Fox is a collection of fables that originated in medieval Europe, and the exact authorship is unknown. The stories were likely passed down orally before being written down in various versions over the centuries. The fables, with the wily fox as a central character, lent themselves to satire and it became a vehicle used by the Protestant reformers and others. The Low-German version first appeared at Lubeck in 1498 and the Rostock editions which followed from 1517 facilitated the spread of the epic towards the east. The woodcuts had previously illustrated the 1539 Rostock edition, of which 36 are attributed to Erhard Altdorfer. Stylistically they depend on the first Lubeck and Rostock editions.

RICHARD, CLERKE (RICHARD CLARKE).

lyn60575
London, Thomas Alchorn, 1637. Folio (280 x 200 mm). In contemporary full calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Light wear to extremities and small paper label pasted on to top of spine indicating the placement in an estate library. Inner boards with a few marks and notes, but otherwise internally fine. (10), 72, (8), 73-248, (16), 249-446, 445-577 pp. Exceedingly rare first edition, posthumously published, of Clerke’s sermons. Richard Clerke embarked on his academic journey when he was elected as a fellow at Christ's College in 1583, a role he held for fifteen years. Despite the college's puritan leaning, Richard was a prominent figure among the conformists. This ideological divide led to tensions, prompting Richard Clerke to lodge complaints of bias with Lord Burghley, who served as the university chancellor. This discord eventually escalated, resulting in physical altercations, with Richard being accused of striking George Downame, a Puritan fellow and future bishop. Edmund Barwell, the college master, ultimately found merit in the accusation. However, before any punitive measures could be taken against Clerke, he appealed the matter to the vice-chancellor. The historical records do not provide further details on the outcome of this appeal. By November of 1590, Barwell and the quarreling fellows managed to reconcile. In a sign of reconciliation, Richard Clerke, George Downame, and others signed an agreement stating: "We, the undersigned, forgive and forget all past injuries and pledge to treat each other with Christian goodwill in our words and actions moving forward." In 1596, Richard Clerke received a significant honor by being chosen as the Lady Margaret Preacher at the university. The following year, he took on the role of vicar in Minster, located on the Island of Thanet. Later, he assumed the positions of rector in Snargate, Kent (1609), and vicar of Monkton with Birchington, Kent, holding these positions concurrently for the remainder of his life. In 1602, he was appointed as the Six-Preacher at Canterbury Cathedral, a role that brought him to the attention of the king and his fellow clerics. (See kingjamesbibletranslators . org).
