EUCLID (EUKLID) OF ALEXANDRIA. - TARTAGLIA'S TRANSLATION.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn34674
Venetia, Curtio Trojano, 1565. 4to. Bound in a very nice recent hcalf in old style. Raised bands and richly gilt back. 315,(1) leaves (=632 pp). Profusely illustrated with gemetrical diagramss in the text. Printers woodcut-device at end. Small part of lower right corner of title gone, no loss of text. Light browning to first and last leaf. 6 last leaves with a faint dampstain. Very light browning to outher margins. Otherwise a fine clean copy. Scarce second edition of Tartaglia's very influential translation of all Euclid's 15 Books, as this Italian translation of Euclid was the first translation at all into the vernacular. The translation by Tartaglia was first published 1543 and was founded on the latin edition of Campanus and Zambetti.Niccolo Fontana of Brescia has a great name in the history of mathematics. A cut in the face from a French soldier caused him to stammer and as a consequence of this he was called 'Tartaglia'. He is famous for his solution of third-degree equations which occasioned a long polemic with Cardano about priority. He is also known for "Tartaglia's Triangle", later known as "Pascal's Triangle", and he is well-known for his Archimedes-edition of 1543 and 1551 with his commentaries."The most famous source of Greek geometry is the monumental work of Euclid of Alexandria, called the "Elements" (around 300 B.C.). No other book of science had a comparable influence on the intellectual development of mankind. It was a treatise of geometry in thirteen books which included all the fundamental results of scientific geometry up to his time. Euclid did not claim for himself any particular discovery, he was merely a compiler. Yet, in view of the systematic arrangement of the subject matter and the exact logical procedure followed, we cannot doubt that he himself provided a large body of specific formulations and specific auxiliary theorems in his deductions. It is no longer possible to pass judgement on the authorship of much of this material; his book was meant as a textbook of geometry which paid attention to the material, while questions of priority did not enter the discussion." (Cornelius Lanzos in "Space through the Ages").Max Steck III:72 - Thomas-Stanford: 39 - Riccardi Euclideana V:1 - Adams E:993. - Brunet II:1090.

Berlin, Carl Matzdorff, 1788-91. Bound in 3 nice uniform contemp. calf. Spinesgilt. Tome-and titlelabels withgiltlettering. A paperlabel pasted on top of spines. Stampson title-pages. XXIV,626,(3);VIII,578;(8),530 pp., 2 tables (one folded) and 9 double-page folded engraved plates (8+1). A bit of soiling and browning to title-page in volume 1. Volume 3 has a rather faint dampstain to the lower third of leaves, causing a bit of yellowing to some leaves in the middle of the volume. A few scattered brownspots, but clean. Scarce first German edition of his "Introductio in analysin infinitorum" from 1748, a work by which Euler lays the foundation of modern mathematical analysis, by summarizing his numerous discoveries in infinite series, infinite products, and continued fractions, and it is here he introduces the CONCEPT OF FUNCTION by the notation F(x), and defines it as any analytical expression formed in any manner from a variable quantity and constants. He includes polynomials, power series, and logarithmic and trigonometric expressions. He also defines a function of several variables. - "Euler's book is one of the few books on mathematics that is mentioned by John Carter and Percy H. Muir in their Printing and the Mind of Man. There Euler is compared with Euclid: what Euclid did with his "Elements" for geometry, Euler did with his "Introductio" for analysis. It was by means of this textbook that analysis became an independent discipline within mathematics." (Karin Reich in "Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics"). Enestrom (Euler Archive): E 101-02 (Introductio) - Volume 3 is not listed by Enestrom, and it comprises 7 memoirs on equations, 2 by Euler and 5 by Lagrange. All 7 are first German translations as the memoirs originally appeared in Latin and French in St. Petersbourg Akad. der Wissenschaften and in Königl. Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin. (Euler: translation of Enestrom E 30 (1738) and E 282 (1764)).The 5 memoirs by Lagrange consist of his famous contributions to the theory of algebraic equations originally published in French in Königl. Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin 1769-73, here in the first German translations, and among these his groundbreaking "Von der Auflösung der numerischen Gleichungen" (Sur la Résolution des Équations Numèriques 1769), where he provides methods, by examining the roots of algebraic equations, of separating the real and imaginary roots of approximating the real roots with continued fractions.Enestrom E 101-102 (1. ed., not listing vol. 3) - PMM: 196 (Introductio).

Ørsted's paper: pp. 417-25. A few scattered brownspots. First French translation and the first translation of Oersted's epoch-making announcement in his Latin pamphlet "Extperimenta circa effectum conflictus electrici in acun magneticam. Hafniæ, 1820" (privately printed in a very small number, and only distributed to colleques in Europe). This discovery and confirmation of the connection between 2 forces, electricity and magnetism, must be considered one of the happiest events in the history of science, both with regard to scientific and practical results. - "From the moment that Ørsted's discovery became known it created an enormous sensation. The results communicated were so astounding that they were received with a certain distrust, but they were stated with such accuracy that it could hardly be permitted to entertain any doubts. In the course of a short time the treatise was translated into all the chief languages." (Kirstine Meyer). - Dibner:61 - PMM: 282 - Horblitt: 3 b. - Sparrow: 152.

Published the same year as the English original."On the basis of an old country tradition that milkmaids who had contracted cowpox were not susceptible to smallpox, Jenner, an English country physician, decided to experiment by injecting cowpox-infected lymph into a local boy. After inoculation the boy was found to be immune to smallpox and Jenner continued his experiments. In 1798 he published the present epochal work, the results of a long and successful series of case histories. By 1803 his work had been translated into numerous languages and his method of immunization was taken up with amazing speed, becoming almost universally adopted. Leipzig und Heidelberg, C.F. Winter'sche Verlagshandlung, (1871) 1872. Recent marbled marbled boards. Spine gilt and with titlelabel in leather with gilt lettering: "Annalen der Pharmacie VIII Suppl. Band. In "Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie. Hrsg. und Redigiert von Friedrich Wöhler, Justus Liebig und Hermann Kopp", VIII. Supplementband. Pp. (4),392 pp. (entire volume offered). 2 small stamps on title-page. Mendelejeff's paper pp. 133-229, 2 (periodic) tables on p. 149 a. 151. Internally fine and clean. First printing of the first German translation of this milestone paper, ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSICS OF CHEMISTRY, in which Mendelejeff first coined the word "periodic", and in which he, for the first time, presented his great discovery of the periodicity of the elements in its full and complete form. At the same time the paper is the first to present his discoveries in a western language. In the paper he described and predicted the properties of a number of undiscovered elements - three of them were discovered in his lifetime. His periodic table was more complete than any of the preceding ones, and more thoroughly founded on experiment. The periodicity of the elements he himself formulated as "Elements placed according to the value of their atomic weights present a clear periodicity of properties."The offered paper is the German translation of his paper which was issued in "Journal of the Russian Chemical Society", vol. 3, pp. 25-56, the same journal in which he first announced his discovery (vol. 1, pp.66-77 (1869) )."In March 1871, two years after his discovery of the law, Mendeleev first named it "periodic". That summer he published in Justus Liebigs Annalen der Chemie his article "Die periodische Gesetzmässigkeit der chemischen Elemente." - the paper offered - which he later characterized as "the best summary of my views and ideas on the periodicity of the elements and the original after which so much was written later about this system. This was the main reason for my scientific fame, because much was confirmed - much later.""(DSB IX, p. 289-90)"Lothar Meyer and Dimitri Mendeleev independently discovered the periodic system, but "Meyer did not publish this work until after the appearance of Mendeleev's first paper on the subject in 1869. His table was very similar to that of Mendeleev, but it contained some improvements and was, perhaps, influential in causing some of the revisions made by Mendeleev in the second version of his table, published in 1870. In general, Meyer was more impressed by the periodicity of the physical properties of the elements, while Medeleev saw more clearly the chemical consequences of the periodic law."(Source Book in Chemistry, p. 434).Horblitt, "100 Books famous in Science" (the Russian paper 1869) No 74. - Dibner, "Heralds of Science" No 48 (only the later book of 1891) - Partington IV: pp. 891-897. - Source Book in Chemistry pp. 442 ff. - PMM: 407 (under Moseley). - Neville "Historical Chemical Library" II: p. 162 (only the French edition from 1879).

Paris, F. Scholl, H. Nicolle, 1809. Large 4to. Bound uncut in contemp. (original ?) boards. A nick at bottom of spine. Scratches to coverpaper at top of spine, along fronthinge and lower right corner on frontboard. Stamps on title-page. (4),VII,277,(1) pp. and 1 lithographed plate with 5 figs. showing the brain. Some scattered brownspots, mainly on the first few leaves. Scarce first edition of the monograph which initiated the new science of "Phrenology". Here they introduced in print the idea of the cerebrum as a collection of organs with different psychological functions, and focused the attention on the functions of the cerebral cortex. Broca regarded Gall's work on phrenology as "the starting point for every discovery in cerebral physiology in our century". The phrenological doctrine, with its suggestion of localization of the functions of the brain, gave a great impetus to the neurological sciences."The first publication of importence is the mémoire presented by Gall and Spurzheim as candidates for election to the Insitur de France: Recherches.... 1809 (the item offered). The mémoire was presented on March 14, 1808, and a committee of five, including Pinel, with Cuvier as chairman, was appointed to examine the researches and the doctrine. Whether Napoleon actually interfered is nor certain, althugh it is plain that he was opposed to the doctrine. Cuvier's long negative report of fifty-two pages is cautious and conservative, and shows that his commitee realized that it was dealing with with a difficult and controversial matter." (Edwin G. Boring).

Lugduni (Lyon), Expensis Gulielmi Hertman, 1577. Folio. Nice later (ab. 1800) half calf w. gilt title-label to back. Corners a bit worn. Title-page repaired from verso, no loss. Marginal annotations in cont. hand, some shaved. A nice copy w. only occasional minor brownspotting and a damp stain to top of first four, and a few later, leaves, not affecting text. Also a damp stain to lower margin of about 30 leaves, mostly towards end, barely affecting text. Last leaf soiled and w. repair to bottom, not affecting text. Owner's inscription to title-page stating that Stephanus Johannes from Copenhagen, Denmark, bought the book in Wittenberg in June 1622, inscription shaved. (8), 792 pp., ff. (28, -Index). The rare counterfeit-edition of the excellent Lambinus-edition of Plautus' works, which originally appeared in 1576. A counterfeit-edition also appeared in Cologne in 1577, and they are both of as great value to Plautus-scholarship as the 1576-edition, all three being of about equal scarcity. The work is especially esteemed for its commentaries, emendations and notes by Lambinus. "The celebrity of Lambinus in almost every classical work which he edited, has already been frequently noticed. Of this admirable edition, Lambinus lived to finish only the first twelve comedies; but his colleague, Helius, professor of Greek, completed the work, partly by transcribing what remained in Lambinus's hand-writing on the subsequent comedies, and partly by the insertion of his own notes, and emendations of the text. In forming the edition, many MSS. And ancient publications were consulted. "In this excellent edition of Plautus", says Harwood, "Lambinus hath manifested great learning and critical sagacity"." (Dibdin II:310).According to Greasse, this edition is a "Contrefacon très correcte de l'éd. De Lambin", and Graesse also states that another edition appeared in Geneva in 1595. Grasse 5:328.

Romae, Sumptibus A. Brugiotti, 1619. Folio. In a later half calf binding with 4 raised bands, gilt lettering and gilt ornamentation to spine. Light wear to extremities, a fine and clean copy. (8), 755, (124) pp. First edition of Scaccia excleedingly influential and popular work on commercial and exchange law, being one of the very first modern treatises on banking and economic theory to represent the new liberal ideas from the period. From the time of Scaccia's Tractatus Commerciis exchange transactions were an important topic in this literature (Rogers, The civilians and the law of bills in the seventeenth century). The work was reprinted 7 times up until 1738. Scaccia did not conceal his liberal attitude concerning loans and other credit transactions. His standard work [the present] on commercial and exchange law received ecclesiastical approval."He rejected the views of Du Moulin on usury and followed the traditional precepts of canon law. Yet he moderated the theory on the illegality of interest by adapting it to the business practices and economic ideas of his time. Even when there was no 'mora', or delay in repayment of a loan, he wrote, it may be licit to charge interest from the first day of the loan, if the creditor would suffer a loss because of 'damnum emergens' or 'lucrum cessans'. He referred to exchange dealing as an inextricable labyrinth designed to evade the usury laws" (Houkes). He justified profit in exchanges from place to place because of differences in value and price: "The fact that, by reason of the greater scarcity or abundance of money in different places, a larger or smaller sum may be given or accepted appears in the transactions commonly effected between Italy and France. For when money is scarce in France on account of the civil wars there, and plentiful in Italy, whoever delivers money in France for repayment in Italy will receive more than he gave. On the other hand, a merchant who delivers money in Italy for repayment in France will receive less. Yet this is no usury, for one sum is equal to the other, on account of the relative abundance and scarcity of money".Houkes p. 361-2Kress 369Einaudi 5141Ciasca, 172Mattioli 3249 (The 1669-edition)

Basel, Ludwig Königs, 1607. 4to. Sewn as issued in later blank wrappers. Engraved ornamental title showing 2 geometers with instruments, on verso large engraved coat of arms (Henry Prince of Wales). (8),65,(2) pp. With 20 large engravings in the text. Printed on good paper, fine and clean. First edition, though a Latin translation appeared at the same time. Zubler was a prolific mathematician and instrument-maker in Zürich, and in this work he describes a triangulation instrument (depicted on a full-page engraving), invented by himself, and shows its use in different situations of practical surveying and military use in artistic settings. The triangulation instrument was able to provide measures for length, width, height and angles all at once, to be read on the scales on the baseline etc. The instrument has two arms and a baseline. By fixing the angle between the baseline and the pivoted arm, setting the sliding sight on the baseline arm to the scaled length of the baseline itself, and finally, from the second station, sighting across the two arms while moving the second sliding sight into alignment with the first sight and the target, the side of the triangle on the ground will be given with the position of the second sight, adjusted to the scale. The provision of a degree scale on a semicircular plate at the pivot permits other techniques involving angle measurements or setting the arms at right angles.Cockle: 947 (Latin ed.) - Poggendorff II:1420.

BRICK-CONSTRUCTIONS.

Berlin, 1863. Folio. Cont. hcalf. (108) pp. of text with many woodcut illustrations and 85 fine lithographed plates in colours, depicting details of bricklaying, patterns, houses etc. etc. Some plates slightly brownspotted. Highly interesting German work on brick-constructions, which dates from the tumultous era of what is by some called the Second Industrial Revolution. This era included the rise of industrial powers such as USA and Germany, and it is not a coincidence that this interesting work on brick-construction is printed in Berlin. From about 1830 and till the early 20th century, there was a revival of industrial building, which meant a large demand for bricks. Luckily, brick manufacturing methods had greatly improved since earlier centuries, and from the middle of the 18th century, the manufacturing process of bricks had become mechanized, and due to improvements in travel and communications, bricks could be transported over wide areas, which meant that there was no longer a need to stick to the locally produced type of brick. The speed of construction during the Industrial Age demanded certain improvements, which were met with throughout the 19th century, e.g. the development of natural cements, and other hydraulic limes, which set quicker and were stronger. The multitude of opportunities within the field allowed for numerous new trends and popular styles, as will be seen from the plates.During the Renaissance and the Baroque, visible brick walls had been unpopular, and they were often covered up, and it was only from the mid 18th century that they began to become somewhat popular. The true popularity of the brick, however, probably only emerged with the possibilities in choosing different types and styles and with the constructing possibilities. During the nineteenth century bricks became the preferred material used for building, and in cities such as Boston and New York, locally made bricks were often much preferred. Brick was much to be favoured in these cities, when the trend of building upwards emerged during the last third of the nineteenth century, and it was chosen above cast, wrought iron and (later) steel and concrete.

(Ehr-M. XI:21).Ehr-M. XI:15-22. P. Johansen 4,2 (p. 22).An excellent copy of the very scarce first complete edition of Holberg's higly famous satirical masterpiece-poem in contemporary full vellum W. Complete with the woodcut frontispiece-portrait and all 14 woodcut plates.

Paris, (1898). 4to. Uncut and unopened in marbled covers. Kept in a full cloth-box. Large copy, printed on better paper. pp. 175-178 and pp. 1215-17 and p. 1218 in: "Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l'Academie des Sciences" tome 127 No 3 and No 26 (comprising pp. 143-207 (no. 3) and pp. 1211-1218 (of No 26)). First editions of the announcements of the discoveries of the 2 elements Polonium and Radium."Inspired by the research of Becquerel (her teacher and friend) in radioactivity, Mme. Curie and her husband Pierre, worked in the laboratories of the Sorbonne upon uranium and thorium. They also observed that certain substances exhibited much greater radioactivity than the amount of these substances indicated. Further investigation led to the discovery of a new element, polonium, in pitchblende from Bohemia. In december 1898, it was disclosed that compounds of barium extracted from pitchblende contained a new radioactive substance a million times more active than that of the uranium of Becquerel; it was named "radium". From several tons of pitchblende, they were able to extract a decigram of pure radium in 1902, and determined its atomic weight at 225. In the following year the Nobel prize was awarded jointly to Becquerel and the Curies." (Bernt Dibner). In the last paper Eugene Demarcay spectroscopically examines the substance for the Curies and confirms the existence of a previously unknown element. - Garrison & Morton No 2003 (describing the use of radium in medicine) - Dibner no. 164 (the note) - Norman No 545 (sale no 994) - Grolier Medicine No 84 B.

ATHENAGORAS.

(Geneve), H. Estienne, 1557. 8vo. Contemp. full vellum. Remains of ties. A crack to upper part of fronthinge. Endpapers renewed, the work seems to be inserted in a contemporary binding. Handwritten title on spine. Titlepage with some browning and soiling and outer margin frayed. Second leaf with browning to right marin. 208 pp. Text in Greek and latin. Scarce first edition - editio princeps - of the famous "Apologia", the carefully written plea for justice to the Christians made by a philosopher, on philosophical grounds, to the Emperors Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus, conquerors, "but above all, philosophers". Athenagoras complains of the illogical and unjust discrimination against the Christians and of the calumnies they suffer, and then meets the charge of atheism. He establishes the principle of monotheism, citing pagan poets and philosophers in support of the very doctrines for which Christians are condemned, and demonstrates the superiority of the Christian belief in God to that of pagans. This first strongly reasoned demonstration of the unity of God in Christian literature is supplemented by an able exposition of the Trinity. Athenagoras was a Christian apologist of the second half of the second century of whom no more is known than that he was an Athenian philosopher and a convert to Christianity. Of his writings there have been preserved but two genuine pieces his "Apology" or "Embassy for the Christians" and a "Treatise on the Resurrection".Adams A-2102. - Dibdin I: 186. - Brunet I:537.

First edition (the French and the German edition published simultaneously) of Bröndsted's magnum opus, his pioneering "Travels and Archaeological Researches in Greece". The work is based on Bröndsted's extensive travels in Greece, and especially the second part, which contains a major study of the Parthenon, is of great significance. "Bröndsted was trained in Denmark as an archaeologist and philologist. After travelling in France and Italy for some years he left Italy in 1810 on the company of Haller van Hallerstein, Linckh and Stackelberg with the intention of exploring Greece and Asia Minor. This group was involved in the excavations at Aegina, and together with Cockerell and Foster they also excavated at Bassae." (Blackmer, 214). Graesse I,546. Brunet I,1273.

Paris, Gallimard, 1954. Uncut in the original printed wrappers. A very nice copy housed in a beautiful brown half morocco box with gilt lettering to spine and gilt super ex-libris to front board. First edition, Service de presse-copy, i.e. review-copy ("S.P" to bottom of title-page and to verso of back wrapper), of Camus' magnificent and highly influential collection of essays entitled "Summer", inscribed to the famous critic of literature and drama, the writer Guy Dumur (1921-1991): "à Guy Dumur/ l'une des/ [ÉTÉ]s [ÉTÉ being printed an L' crossed out in front, with s added in Camus' hand]/ son vieil et fidele ami/ Albert Camus" on half-title.The younger Guy Dumur was a close friend of Camus, who hired him to work on "Combat" with him. It is reported that he had a great talent for discovering new talent. Since childhood, he was extremely passionate about the theatre and came to work with all the great dramatic figures in Paris at the time. He is also famous for a number of well respected novels. The essays in "L'été" are devoted to Algiers and represent a very personal side of Camus, who provides a marvelous poetic and humorous picture of the provincial simplicities of Oran and Algiers. For many Camus-devotees, "L'Été" constitutes one of the most beloved works, as it gives the feel of a certain intimacy with the author that few of his other works does. "In "Return to Tipasa", perhaps the most confessional essay in "Summer", which dates from a long trip to Algeria in December 1952, Camus issues his now famous testimony of survival - "In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer" (Hawes: Camus, A Romance, 2009, pp. 181-82).

HUSSERL, E.G.

Halle-Saale, C.E.M. Pfeffer (Robert Stricker), 1891. 8vo. Nice contemporary red half cloth with gilt title and gilt lines to spine. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy. XVI, 324 (last p. errata) pp. The very rare first edition of Husserl's first major work, "The Philosophy of Arithmetic".Initially a student of mathematics, Husserl began attending Brentano's lectures on psychology and philosophy in Vienna and decided to devote himself primarily to philosophy. In 1887 he wrote "Über den Begriff der Zahl", on which his first proper scientific work which appeared four years later is based. In his "Philosophy of Arithmetic" he wishes to provide a sound foundation for mathematics by combining it with philosophy and psychology, here analyzing the psychological processes necessary for the concept of number, -a variant of the psychologism, he later came to criticize so severely. The book was met with instant positivity and received much warm praise, though one person criticized it to bits: Gottlob Frege. Frege who was one of the sharpest and most important logicians of the 19th century had shown that the sentences of arithmetic were analytical, and that arithmetic could be regarded as a branch of logic. He thus built the foundation of mathematical logistics. In spite of him being the chief logician of the 19th century, Frege was barely recognized in his lifetime, and he was barely read by his contemporaries. Husserl, however, did study him intensively, and we know for a fact that he knew all of Frege's works (at least until the year 1893), and it is likely that it was Frege who had inspired his interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. In this early work Husserl sharply attacks Frege and his anti-psychologism, and he sets out to define the natural numbers by counting with the methods of descriptive psychology (primarily Brentano's). It is to be noted, however, that the form of psychologism of logic and mathematics which he so sharply attacks in his logical investigations differs somewhat from the sort presented in his early work. The "Philosophy of Arithmetic" is also hugely interesting in the attempt to determine the philosophical development of the greatest philosopher of the very late 19th-20th century. He himself states that already before the work was published, he had changed his mind, and he had actually been in doubt as to psychologism from the very beginning. As opposed to what is frequently stated, Frege's attacks on Husserl's work is not fully justified, which Frege probably also recognized himself. Husserl actually does distinguish between subjective representation and objective representation, and objectivism is clearly stated in the "Philosophy of Arithmetic". Thus Husserl here actually, independent of Frege, reaches the same theory of sense and reference as him, and Frege also recognized this. Frege's attacks were probably to a large extent aimed at the current ideas of the foundations of arithmetics at the Berlin School of Weierstrass, but these differed from Husserl's point of view in a number of ways.Still, Husserl's notion of logic and mathematics must not be confused with Frege's; -for Frege Arithmetic can be derived from logic; for Husserl mathematics is the ontological correlate of logic, but the two cannot be reduced to one another. Husserl is now famous as the father of phenomenology, and he decisively influenced the likes of Heidegger, Sertre, Carnap, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Ricoeur, Derrida etc. etc.
