Med en förteckning / katalog över Milles' medaljer. - - - The first Swedish thesis on Carl Milles. (Abstract:) "The thesis comprises four studies concerning the Swedish sculptor Carl Milles (1875-1955). The first, on form and idea, takes up certain formal problems, e.g. Milles' relation to the German sculptor Adolf Hildebrand and the discrepancy between the markedly ethereal, visionary style of Milles late drawings and their plastic counterparts' heavy, realistic language. There are signs, it is argued, that in his late sculptures Milles was moving towards a style more in the nature of relief. This study goes on to consider religious outlook, its evolution - not least in the course of encounters with the French astronomer and religious philosopher Camille Flammarion and his writings - and its influence on Milles' creative work. The second study deals with motif and form in a dozen or so medals which Milles designed between 1916 and 1955, besides taking up other works associated with the medals. In the analysis of the Gustav Vasa medal, for instance, consideration is paid to two versions, from 1907 and 1925, for the monument to this monarch for the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, just as the series of reliefs proposed by Milles for the facade of the Göteborg Art Museum is taken into account in connection with the medal for the Göteborg Exhibition of 1923. A chronological list with a description of all Milles' medals is included at the end of the thesis. The third study considers the radical renewal which Carl Milles generated in Swedish medallic art. The style of his medals is analysed, together with the importance of his contributions in this field. In 1926, on the initiative of W. B. Yeats, Milles was invited, along with six other European and American sculptors, to take part in a design competition for the Irish Free State's coinage. The fourth study contains an account of this competition, its background and so on, with a presentation of the designs which Milles submitted, albeit unsuccessfully".
