- - - "Some 75 decorative wall-paintings in Swedish churches from the period 1530-1630 have been preserved or documented. The majority were executed in the first decades of the 17th century and are concentrated to Södermanland, Uppland and Östergötland. The paintings, which were often donated by one of the county families in the parish, have been examined as to style and iconography. The quality is unpretentious throughout, but they are distinct and decorative. They give a clear picture of a developing Evangelistic-Lutheran iconography. The names of only a few of the artists are known. Several of them also worked in Renaissance manor houses and others might be called 'peasant painters'. As a rule they used earlier compositions, generally woodcuts from German or Swedish bibles or prayer-books, in some cases medieval designs or etchings from the Netherlands. These were carefully copied, but the artist was allowed to make alterations for dogmatic or ethical reasons. The subjects which were also influenced by the earlier compositions, consist of biblical motifs taken from both the Old and the New Testament. The scenes most often found are the Last Judgement, The Apostles, motifs from Genesis and the Crucifixion. Also certain allegories, principles and a few saints are portrayed, most often St. George. The wall-paintings successfully fulfill their purpose: to teach and to decorate."
