Abstract (in English, the dissertation is in Swedish with a 7-page English Summary): "The aim of this study is to describe the situation of women artists during the main period of female emancipation in Sweden. In 1864 a section was opened for women at the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. This was one of several educational establishments which were opened to women, because various social and demographic changes in Sweden had led to a surplus of unmarried upper and middle-class women, for whom educational opportunities and the means of earning a living had to be found. - - - The study is carried out with computer and includes all the students attending the Academy's painting and sculpture schools 1864-1924. The variables studied are recruitment, studies and practice, home district, branch of art, subjects, activities inside and outside the artistic sphere, amount of activity and awards. Men and women are compared. Results are shown in tables and diagrams. Historical and ideological background is described. Family and work situation of some women artists illustrates the statistical investigation. - - - The study demonstrates that the women students generally came from a higher social stratum than the men. The traditional female role protected women from total elimination as artists, but also prevented them from putting an all-out effort into their careers. It was difficult for them to compete with men, who by tradition had easier access to the various institutions of the artistic world. The latest groups of women students, including the married women, were more professionally active than any earlier group and received relatively more awards than the men of the same period."
