(Abstract:) "This study is an attempt to define the imagery of newspapers - not as an end in itself, but as an instrument of exploring contemporaneity - by delineating a functional pattern which discriminates ways in which pictures comment upon referred verbal messages. By distinguishing reading-acts (restrictive act, extensive act), structural features in the acquirement of knowledge are analysed. Departing from a distinction of two dimensions of knowledge (attribution, affirmation), two sets of categories are generated: context-variants (system, status rerum, game, ritual) supply a typology for the verbal messages; information-factors (identification, stimulation, analysis) constitute a typology for the pictorial messages. From the two sets of categories a number of combinations are deduced, specifying the pictorial intervention in verbal messages. - The indicator of context-variants is subject-matter (politics, sports, etc.) and the indicator of information-factors is picture-type (single-portrait, situation-picture, etc.). Swedish daily newspapers from the period 1900-1970 were analysed. - Among small-scale pictures the intervention-type paraphrased as 'abstraction from an event' was by far the most frequent. Among large-scale pictures the intervention-type providing 'sensuous understanding of an event' predominated. The intervention-types paraphrased as 'specification within a system' and as 'system exemplified by an event' proved to be of less importance. An analysis of effects is initiated, in which pictorial knowledge is considered in a socio-psychological context. - - - (Ars Suetica, 3.)
