Illustrated dissertation in Swedish about Teaching Methods in Elementary Drawing, especially in the 19th century. - - - Abstract: ". The aim of this study is to examine the occurrence of drawing teaching in Sweden and its manifestation during the nineteenth century. The teaching of drawing in Sweden follows an international model. From having been a subject for the children of the aristocrats and professional students unreservedly, the teaching of drawing became a common medium of education when the public educational system was built up in the nineteenth century. A training college for drawing-masters was founded in 1879 at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm, the present Konstfackskolan. Two principal pedagogic lines can be distinguished. The traditional method of copying printed originals and newer methods which promoted discipline, necessary for managing the large number of pupils in the classes. Originals were principally imported from France and Germany but even created by Swedish artists and drawing-masters. Here the lithographic method was of great importance. The human body and ornaments in classical style were drawn as well as picturesque motifs characteristic of Romanticism. This kind of teaching was criticized. The other line of development was dominated by Pestalozzi and his simultaneous-teaching method which was practised during the whole century with the exception of the period 1820-1864 when the Lancastrian monitorial system was implemented. Most of the drawing instruction books were addressed to the master who initiated the instructions by drawing at the blackboard or by dictation. The German Adolf Stuhlmann's courses were enforced from 1879. They started with drawing on dotted papers, "stigmografi". This method existed to the end of the century. Linear drawing without instruments and contour drawing dominated. English influence was absent as was free creativity. These drawing theories have brought about a heritage of an aesthetic, pedagogic and idealogical way of thinking formulated already in antiquity."
