Originally published in 1964 by Cassell. - - - "In his introduction to this unique volume of marine art, Gervis Frere-Cook writes: 'The purpose of this book is to show how the sea has provided the opportunity and inspiration for sailors and craftsmen to produce works of art. Its scope encompasses the maritime world and goes back in time as far as recorded history.' Seventeen contributors, each a world authority on his subject, provide the entertaining and informative text while hundreds of illustrations, many in color, show such a wide range of decorative art as gilded copper vanes from Viking prows, painted Eskimo canoe paddles, splendidly ornate menus of early steamships, roses and castles of British canal boats, rare early charts on vellum and the elegant simplicity of nautical instruments. Also shown are symbolic ornaments of fish and frigate birds from the South Seas; lettering on modern liners; luxuriously furnished Mississippi steamboats; the extravagant painting, carving and gilding of seventeenth and eighteenth century warships and figureheads, from the traditional busty lady to a present-day Norwegian ship's great glass mosaic bow. This outstanding book includes examples of craftsmanship in ivory, metal and stone, the earliest here associated with funerary rites: the models from the tombs in Egypt and the Gokstad ship in Norway. It also displays much of the art of sailors who passed the time on long voyages by making beautiful bone models, intricate ropework and sentimental scrimshaw etching and carving. Richly illustrated and authoritatively written, The Deocative Arts of the Mariner is unparalleled in its scope and distinction". - - - Main sections on Vessels of the Ancient World, Viking Longships, Vessels of the Mediterranean, Sailing Ships of the Atlantic Seas, Steamships of the Atlatic Seas, State Barges, Vessels of the Inland Waterways of England and Holland, Mississippi Rivercraft, Charts and Maps, Navigational Instruments and TImekeepers, Figureheads, Decorative Rope and Canvaswork, Ship Models, Scrimshaw, Maritime Art of the Americas and Pacific Ocean, Malaysian Craft, Vessels of the Orient.
