(Publisher:) "Toby and Character Jugs of the 20th Century and Their Makers is a unique reference book in the collectibles field. The first book ever published on this 20th century collecting phenomenon, it provides extensive information never before in print, and gathers other dispersed information into a single volume. Included herein is information on over 175 potters of the "20th century, plus listings of over 4,000 Toby and Character Jugs, a majority of which never have been documented. The text is lavishly illustrated with over 1,500 color photographs of more than 3,000 separate jugs. Even within the well documented world of Royal Doulton, the authors have provided photographs of several jugs that previously have not been published. The scope, detail and pictorial abundance set this book apart from any other reference book on the subject. Following a brief history of Toby and Character Jugs, each potter is featured with a summary history of the firm, notable events, and elaboration of specific artists. Fach section details the pottery's production of Toby and Character Jugs, providing information about the artist, characters, series, and other interesting aspects of jug collecting. It also includes a summary listing of known jugs, listed by character name, jug height, and production period. Color photographs of jugs and illustrations of marks within each section enhance the information provided. A separate Price Guide to all jugs listed is also available. This book is the culmination of over seventy years of collecting experience and three years of research and travel on the part of the authors. It is a "must have" reference book for every serious Toby and/or Character Jug collector, as well as the general antique and collectible enthusiast or dealer".
