(Publisher:) "This new edition of Beatrix Potter 1866-1943 is published in 1995, the centenary year of the National Trust. This is particularly appropriate, as Beatrix Potter was an early supporter of the National Trust, and the Lake District was one of the areas singled out by the Trust's founders as a place of natural beauty worthy of preservation. Profits from this book will go to the National Trust's Lake District Appeal for the conservation of the countryside and way of life to which Beatrix Potter devoted her last thirty years. Originally published as the companion to the 1987/88 exhibition at the Tate Gallery, this beautiful book explores the art of Beatrix Potter. The influences of contemporary artists, her flowering as an artist and a writer of books for children and her later life as farmer and conservationist are all demonstrated through more than 450 colour and black-and-white reproductions of her work. The authoritative text, combined with attractive layout, full index and source list make this the most comprehensive book yet published on the work of arguably the greatest children's author and artist of the century".
