Illustrated dissertation about Stellar vaults in late medieval Sweden. In Swedish with English Summary. - - - (Abstract:) When the abbey church of Vadstena was vaulted in the 1420-ies a new epoch in vault architecture was introduced in Sweden. This thesis deals with the period 1420-1520, and approximately 250 of the stellar-vaulted churches erected during those years are still standing. Geographically the work is limited to medieval Sweden which at that time included today's Finland. The vaults of the abovementioned 250 churches are inventoried, classified, and mapped out. The investigation has shown that there exist about ten basic stellar vault designs and, in addition, some thirty variations of them. The designs are presented by means of standardized plan drawings with commentaries. No uniform terminology has been agreed upon and, therefore, the various stellar designs were divided into groups according to their basic design and then given appropriate names. The majority of churches with preserved stellar vaults are found in the province of Uppland. There were churches with stellar vaults in all the medieval dioceses and most of them are found in the archdiocese. A certain cooperation between the vault constructor and the mural-painter is evident. Influences from countries along the southern Baltic coast on Swedish vault-construction technique have been established. Finally, vault construction in Sweden during the 17th and 18th centuries is dealt with. this period a change was made from rib vaulting with visible ribs to so called cell vaults in edge technique. A number of wood-constructed stellar vaults are presented. Vaulting technique and routes along which it spread were compared, and when conclusions were drawn of medieval vaulting it became evident that there must have been a net of contacts between the master-masons and the persons who commissioned the building ventures during the Middle Ages that was similar to that net which existed during the centuries that followed.
