- - - (Abstract:) "The aim of this thesis is to illustrate the development and types of military lodgings during the past three hundred years. The classification method has been chosen with regard to future research work and to make possible further study of archives and documents. Classification is also based on the denomination in archives and possibly be not in concurrence with present day descriptive terms. The thesis is subdivided into three sections corresponding to the three main variations of lodgings involved. The examination of the different types of lodgings and methods of housing has been achieved by studying documents and existing buildings and analysis of these and housing conditions is grounded on information available concerning economical, practical, cultural and hygienic aspects which may have influenced the resultant norm for the planning and subsequent construction. Economic considerations have evidently been of paramount importance and therefore strict budgets were necessary. Practical planning has not been apparent unless definite requirements for specific practical aspects concerning hygien, storage and living quarters were foremost. On the other hand it is quite obvious that emphasis on esthetical considerations was placed on most building enterprises carried out by the Government. The construction and architectural features of military buildings and compounds were well related to their functions. Great importance was attached to the exterior design of military edifices and plans had to be submitted to the King for approval up to the beginning of the century. Generally speaking military compounds and barracks can be easily identified owing to architectural coherence in their formation with co-ordinated building materials, designs and colouring. A secluded and imposing impression is given even in the midst of a civilian district despite a conglomeration of different buildings being grouped together each with a specific military role. However a natural similarity is discernible in the architecture of contemporary public and private buildings. At the present time there are approximately 400 barracks for permanent use distributed over the country in more than 80 communities". - - - (Armémusei skrifter, 3.)
