(Publisher:) "Architect, painter, furniture designer and graphic artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh possessed a kaleidoscopic talent. This fresh appraisal of Mackintosh is uniquely illustrated with the contemporary photographs of Colin Baxter along with many archive images. It forms an authentic overview of the man and his achievements both within the context of his personal life and times, and how his work is viewed today". - - - "Today Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) is internationally recognised as one of the truly great figures of early twentieth century architecture and design. Sadly it was not always so. He so quickly fell from fashion in his own lifetime that he became an exile, and left his native Glasgow in failure. After some unsettled years in England and France he returned to London where he died in obscurity. This new book is not just a guide to his work; rather it is a study in words and photographs of his distinctive life and style. Glancing between his work in 1900 and how it is viewed now, it locates the man in his time and also the meaning of his work for our own time today. Uniquely written as a series of episodes it offers a fresh overview of his troubled life and multi-faceted genius. The author also poses the question as to whether Mackintosh suffered from a medical condition only recently identified. In his short, sporadic but intensely creative career Mackintosh produced only a small number of buildings and interiors. Yet his elegant and integrated decorative schemes were breathtaking innovations of apparent simplicity. The triumph of his architectural period was his masterwork: The Glasgow School of Art, which has been described as 'one of the greatest achievements of all time, comparable in scale and majesty to Michelangelo.' Remarkably, Mackintosh also designed over 300 pieces of furniture, and produced a wealth of refined paintings, drawings, graphics, stained glass and textile designs. This major new work is fully illustrated with many contemporary photographs specially taken by Colin Baxter, and a collection of carefully chosen archive pictures. They focus on Charles Rennie Mackintosh's artistic achievements and include many lesser-known images, as well as classic Mackintosh trademarks, for which he is so widely recognised and admired around the world today".
