Published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name touring several venues in Britain. - - - (Publisher:) "This volume is a more extensive presentation of Icelandic art than has previously appeared in English. It looks at Icelandic painting in the context of the great and ancient traditions of Icelandic literary and poetic culture dating from the fusion of Celtic and Nordic peoples in the ninth century. It documents the growth of the artistic tradition since the turn of the century, and the underlying importance of landscape, always a stimulating part of daily life. From the inception of the indigenous tradition, by pioneering painters such as Thorarinn B Thorlaksson, Asgrimur Jonsson, Jon Stefansson and Johannes S Kjarval, right up to the present day, the pure light, changing scenery and raw elegance of the landscape seem to lie at the heart of Icelandic art. The same is true in tapestry, where Asgerdur Buadottir and others have gained recognition, and even in sculpture, where history and folklore also have inspired such leading artists as Einar Jonsson and Asmundur Sveinsson, whose works are also dealt with. These elements are introduced by the four contributors, two of whom - Sigurdur A Magnusson and Halldor Bjorn Runolfsson - are Icelandic authorities, while two - John Russell Taylor and Michael Tucker - are British critics. The history of the art and cultural substructure are broadly and informatively discussed, together with the place of such work, and its aesthetic value, both in Iceland today and in Scandinavia and Northern Europe as a whole. Landscapes from a High Latitude contains excellent biographical and bibliographical material never before available under one cover, and a superb set of illustrations (66 works by 30 artists) which chart the development of landscape-associated art in Iceland right up to the present. It is worthwhile pointing to the unusual equality between male and female artists in Iceland: painters such as Juliana Sveinsdottir, Kristin Jonsdottir, Nina Tryggvadottir and Louisa Matthiasdottir have all achieved eminence, and have complemented many male colleagues in the course of the development of their national tradition. It is an adventure which continues still, and which is both extraordinary and fascinating. Landscapes from a High Latitude is produced in tandem with an exhibition of the same name touring Britain". - - - Contents: "A Bird's-Eye View of Icelandic Culture", "Reflections on Icelandic Art", "Colour plates", "Symbolism: The Constant Strain in Icelandic Art", "Not the Land, but an Idea of a Land", "Biographies and List of Works", "Bibliography".
