(Summary:) "The Princess and the royal portraits - A small portrait, executed in superb embroidery and representing the Dano-Norwegian King Christian IV (1558-1648), is historically one of the most fascinating exhibits in the Museum. The author leads the reader through a maze of history, in an endeavour to trace the identity of the person whose deft fingers produced this little masterpiece. He examines the theory, long current, that this exquisite little portrait was in fact the work of none other than Christian IV's own daughter Leonora Christina, who married a Danish nobleman, Count Corfitz Ulfeldt, but fell from grace after the accession of her half-brother Frederick II. Her husband was accused, rightly or wrongly - and here historians differ - of plotting against the king. As a result the talented and charming Princess spent 22 dreary years imprisoned in the Blue Tower in the royal palace in Copenhagen. Her own description of these years has come down to us in the famous autobiographical Jammers Minde (= Remenbrance of Woe). From this and other contemporary accounts we have ample evidence of the Princess's outstanding skill as a needlewoman, and of the perseverance - and ingenuity - with which she pursued this favourite pastime during her incarceration. Though the portrait of her royal father is not among the works she lists, there seems to be a great deal of evidence to suggest that it was her work".
