Med monografiska avsnitt om lustparkerna på Ekolsund, Drottningholm, Haga, Rosersberg, Skuru, Värnanäs, Olivehult, och Ebbetorp. - - - (Abstract:) "This thesis has two aims: to describe and analyse the introduction and developement of the English landscape garden in Sweden during the Gustavian era (1771-1809), and to examine how conceptions of nature, as applied to gardens, changed over the same period. The thesis comprises five main parts, the first of which deals briefly with the origins and developement of the landscape garden in England and France, as well as outlining its history in Sweden. The second part explores various aspects of the landscape garden, including the importance of the gardening Lords. Biographies are given of some of these, and also of Sweden's only professional garden designer during this period, Fredrik Magnus Piper. In addition, the role of gardeners and gardening manuals is discussed as well as the practice of garden design. The last four chapters in this section analyse phenomena closely linked to the landscape garden, such as exoticism, the ferme ornée, the Picturesque, and the relationship of garden and town. The third part deals with typology and modes of expression including vegetation patterns and ground modelling. Furthermore, it considers the main house or palace, together with architectural elements such as hermitages, temples and tombs. Attention is also paid to the desire for integration and the use of intermediate structures such as ruins and grottoes. The fourth part considers the boundary-transcending character of the landscape garden and its relationship to both aesthetic and non-aesthetic phenomena: botany and rural economics, landscape painting, theatre art, and occultism. The final section of the thesis comprises four monographs on the most important royal parks [Ekolsund, Drottningholm, Haga, Rosersberg] and four private ones [Skuru, Värnanäs, Olivehult, Ebbetorp]. The thesis shows that the English landscape garden was introduced in Sweden by the gardening Lords as a foreign fashion, and only assumed a conscious artistic design with the work of Piper. It also emerges that the landscape garden sprang not only from the sources and traditions of art itself, such as the Renaissance garden, but also from non-aesthetic factors, including advances in natural history, agricultural reform and fears about the nation's dwindling forests".
